But! But! But getting terribly lost and losing all the buildings you spent hours pouring over was a fundamental part of the Minecraft experience! It was up there with the feeling absolute confusion when first confronted with the game.
Thanks, now I can find my old abandoned fort that I left 20 years ago with a large stash of diamond materials, that I lost when I had a mining accident. Well, better late then never.

They have a fog of war and only reveal areas you explore while holding the map. So unless you find your lost fortress whilst wielding the map, It shall not be marked upon said map.
On the plus side the Map you will in short order know where your fortress is not.

Know what would be really nice? If Notch fixed the memory leaks in Minecraft so thousands of players could set the rendering distance to far without getting Out of Memory blackscreens. And these aren't users on shitty rigs, I'm talking the newest gpus, 12gbs of RAM, core i7s. Google it if ya don't beleebmeh.

I initially had that problem on Windows 7, but never under Linux wiht only 4GB of RAM and an ION GPU, and I have all the settings turned all the way up. I think I read somewhere that the issue is fixed by running under the Sun 64bit JRE (if you're on a 64bit Windows).
