The Conduit sells under 72K in US during June photo

Those who argue against so-called "hardcore" games on the Wii have some fresh justification, with news that The Conduit failed to break into the top five Wii games for June and shifted a mere 72,000 copies. While some in our comments argue that the game was only released on June 23 (a fair point), it's still not a glowing success for the game's launch week.

"In terms of top SKUs, The Conduit placed at number 25," said a spokesman for NPD. Looks like The Conduit will share a similar fate to House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld, as Sega continues to find that special something and create a "hardcore" title that will actually sell on the Wii.

This is Sega's third attempt to put a more traditional videogame on the Wii, and so far the results have been less than impressive. Sega maintains that its strategy is working, with its games making back money with a slow burn rather than a quick burst, but it still has to be discouraging for publishers and studios to see these games hit the ground with a stumble rather than a dash.

Still, Capcom's doing alright, so we know that these "mature" games have an audience. Maybe Sega needs to dig deep into its pockets and actually market these things?

Look, it's simple. If they want to sell to their target audience, they need to get that shit off of the Wii. That's all the "strategy" one needs to sell such a game.

Out of the 3 major hardcore wii games published by Sega the only one actually worth the inital $50 was HotD. MadWorld was a blast but was more of a $30 and and The Conduit is just too damn broken to be worth buying period, and yes I do infact own all three. Where the Wii truely excells for hardcore gamers is not with games like The Conduit which are simply trying to copy what gamers can get on the 360 and PS3, but with truely unique games like de Blob, which btw is a game that everyone should own.

Capcom and the guys behind No More Heroes proved that mature games can sell on the wii. What sega need to do is do some more advertisements for the game to get the sell they want.

I have the impression that The Conduit was marketed pretty well. It's just that the game is really bland when compared to other FPS games for other consoles.

shockat has a point. But I mean, Conduit was actually advertised. Metroid Prime 3 for example wasn't at all. I think I've even seen TV ads for Conduit. I can't remember now.

I hope Sega doesn't let this discourage them, for the people that do get these games and enjoy them it is very appreciated. I agree on the point about De Blob, more truly unique experiences on the Wii. One of them may eventually get some real wind in their sails from being marketed and received well.

@Blackdeath:

I was about to say the same thing. Are we ignoring the fact that this came out on June 23rd? That would mean it sold 72K copies in a week, not in a month.

No More Heroes debuted, I think, at about the same clip of 50k ish initial sales.

Maybe that's just how big the market is on the Wii? Certainly, there's a number of people that have bought into the "lifestyles" that each console taps into. Maybe, frightening, that how niche the "core" market really is on the Wii?

In which case, doing so well w/o marketing overhead might be the thing that makes these ventures profitable.

Still, I'd be interesting in seeing how a game as robust as a Fallout 3 (long form RPG) or God of War (Solid 8 hour actioner) would fair, if a good AAA attempt is put forth.

I don't get all the hype for this game, I played it for 3 hours and got bored. Yes the controls are good, but really the entire thing just feels like "been there-done that". I think the argument that it doesn't need to be original because the Wii needs a good "solid" FPS is weaksauce.

I'm renting this right now and honest to god it is terrible. And I was hoping I'd love it, was really rooting for it. The reviewers of this game on most sites are on drugs or being bribed even to give it a 6 or 7 out of 10.

Call Of Duty: World At War on Wii - although obviously not as good as the 360 or PS3 versions - kicks the absolute crap out of this game.

@ Brando

I agree, the game is barebones to say the least, the online mode is the main draw, it is basic as the single player campaign but we have nothing of the sorts more so considerinf that it sidesteps Friend codes so it is good.

The Conduit could mean more FPS ands traditional gaming on Wii, the same way the success of SEGA´s shooters and RE:UC paved the way the torrent of on rails shooters we get nowadays.

The audience that would buy it are going to own a HD console as well, and there are better shooters on both PS3 and 360. Probably more than the average person can buy. If they want to shift "mature" games, they need to create an experience that works on Wii that is different enough from what you can get on the HD platforms to justify a buy.

But I'm always saddened to hear about Platinum games underselling, because I loved Clover Studios. MadWorld doing badly is a shame. The sooner we get Bayonetta the better!

I agree with Blackdeath. The game hasn't even been out for a whole 30 days yet, why are we tabulating it's monthly sales? The other point I wanted to bring up was already mentioned by Mr. Sterling in the article. The Wii has been proven to run off of a different sales model then the other consoles. Wii games don't sell a million copies in a month and then die, they sell for extended periods of time. Judging the game a failure because it didn't sell a kazillion copies right away doesn't work for this instance.

Am I the only one who looks at this game and sees that it's only strength is that it's a rarity on the wii?

If this game came out on 360 or ps3 i'd probably never care to pick it up, simply for the bland and average looks of it. Woo. FPS. Alien lookin things. Government conspiracy? Woo. But put it on the Wii, and suddenly you're innovative!

Maybe they should have just gone with 10 minigames and bright colors. That would sell shitloads.

Well, I'll tell you what.

I am a Wii owner, and that's the only current-gen console I own. Although I have access to a 360, it's not mine, so the only console I actively buy games for is the Wii.

And I did not buy this game. From the moment it was announced on IGN and we saw that very first video, my only reaction was that it looked generic. The main character looks like a tool, and the aliens look just like people in cruddy costumes. That's a mark against the game in my book, and when the game comes out, the reviews pour in, and we find out that the game is just sub-par anyway, it comes accross to me as a game I could safely let go.

I consider myself somewhat of a Nintendo fanboy, but even I can't justify buying a game that I know is going to be mediocre. That would be stupid.

If a game comes out and it looks good, I'll get it. But it has to be good by my standards, not the "good" associated with a 7.0 from Gamespot. That's the same reason I didn't bother with Deadly Creatures or Battalion Wars 2. They struck me as "meh" games. I get the same feeling from The Conduit

And that's what really grinds my gears about people telling me I better buy these games if I want to get more hardcore material on the Wii. It makes me feel like Sega etc. are just a bunch of panhandling bums begging for my money; you see them, and you walk on the other side of the street because the mere sight of them make you feel irritated and uncomfortable.

I'm more interested to see how it goes in the long term, besides, but since I haven't seen a single TV commercial for this game then I doubt it'll ever get more then 200K. Shame though because the online multiplayer is a lot of fun.

I've read nothing but mediocre reviews of this title and (IMO) the screenshots look terrible. If I was rocking the Wii as my only console, I'd probably pick it up, but there are just too many better FPS games on the other two systems to even consider shelling out the cash for this one.

There's a big difference between Call of Duty, an established and well-known franchise, and The Conduit, a newcomer to the FPS genre. Everybody expects Call of Duty to sell well because it's well-known. People are just saying that mature games can't sell on the Wii because most new franchises to come to the platform have been under-achievers, which for some of the part is true (Even in Japan, No More Heroes sold like shit). Fine, it came out in the last week of June, but you really can't say that justifies that mature Wii games can sell a lot. Personally, I don't think it will hit one million units, but if I'm wrong, I'll be the first one to say it.

Btw, I do want a Wii, but I'm just being honest.

Even as someone that digs The Conduit, I've got to say Killzone 2 and Halo 3 are overall higher quality experiences, no question.

And while the game sits right there between godawful and "oh, ok" in the looks department, playing through has been a fun experience.

If you dig the idea and execution of IR shooting, its well done in that regard. But certainly, compared to offerings on other systems, it is understandably a hardsell.

This is a FPS game, right? When people think "hardcore" why does this necessarily seem to translate to "FPS"? Except for a few rare exceptions like Half-Life 2, I couldn't give less of a rat's ass about FPS games. There are other types of "hardcore" games than FPS games. It has nothing to do with this being on the Wii, and has little to do with the Wii being incapable of hosting a good "hardcore" game.

God I hate that word so much now. "Hardcore". Suck my dick, "hardcore".

I picked up a Special Edition copy of this and it has rarely left my Wii over the past couple weeks that I've had it. I think anyone who wants to play a good online FPS on their Wii should and will pick this up. I've been having a blast with it online...even if I did just accidentally delete my file and have to start over with the mediocre campaign. Despite its rather poor critical reception, I think it's honestly better than the reviews have scored it and if you compare it with MOH:H2 it's so much better despite receiving poorer reviews, which I think can be boiled down to not meeting the hype of "Halo 3 for the Wii" kind of stuff. I don't really care what reviewers think anyway, I'm having fun and that's what matters. I don't feel the slightest bit of regret for giving High Voltage my dollar. They earned it and my continued business in the future.

Anyway, if anyone wants to play with someone else online here's my Friend Code.

This is Nintendo's fault for marketfucking their system they way they do. Overkill and Madworld are absolutely classic titles that anyone calling themselves a gamer should check out. I haven't tried The Conduit yet, but I have noticed that it's PR is pretty shitty. Either the title is just really not that great and they fear overhype and backlash... or they are shooting themselves in the foot and disregarding an important audience (you and me, the people that have been playing their games and paying their salaries for the last 20-40 years...).

Figure it out Nintendo... are you selling gym equipment that's not really gym equipment, or are you selling a gaming console that EVERYONE (not just dumb celebrity blondes) can enjoy?

Its not great, but its not horrible either. inFAMOUS only sold 175,000 its first week, and its a 1st Party game. As for the marketing I don't know what you're talking about Jim, the Conduit was marketing all over the place. It had TV ads on all the time, on many different channels. I see more Conduit commercial than both UFC, or inFAMOUS!

Considering most hardcore Wii owners have softmodded their Wii, the chance of pirating is relatively high on this one. That could be one factor leading to the poor numbers.

RE: Madworld. Yeah... no. I doubt I would have cared all that much about Madworld if it were on 360 anymore than I currently care about it on the Wii (which is to say, not much at all). Again, this is less a "the Wii can't handle 'hardcore' games" or "there's no market for 'hardcore' games on the Wii' thing and more just a "they still aren't making very many good 'hardcore' games for the Wii" thing.

Blaugh, "hardcore". *spit*

As I've said before, all of Nintendo's mature titles have just been buckets of blood and cursing, not many people are gonna care about that especially when the gameplay is so boring as was the case with NMH and Mad World.

I haven't played Conduit but I saw numerous streams of it and it does seem rather bland, this is just another case of Wii fans hyping the shit out of a mediocre titles and then being shocked when it sells poorly.

This isn't in the least bit surprising to me. Beyond the games documented dubious quality, it's hard to imagine anyone looking at this game and thinking, "Wow! Finally! A first person shooter that actually works on my console!" That may have worked for Goldeneye back in 1997, but FPS games on the consoles in those days were nearly non-existent, mostly PC ports, and always garbage.
In 2009, however, developers have pretty much cracked the code on developing console FPS games. The Conduit, with it's boring level design, slow pacing, feature-less multiplayer and drab art design, doesn't aspire to be a good FPS. It wants to be an FPS "like on those other consoles". It's a game that tries to shoo-horn a genre on the Wii that A) doesn't really fit, and B) doesn't serve the console that well. When the Wii is at it's best, with games like Warioware:Smooth Moves, No More Heroes, and Super Mario Galaxy, the games are UNLIKE ANYTHING ON ANY OTHER PLATFORM. PERIOD. You can find plenty of FPS games, however, and trying to build the Wii into a second rate 360 or PS3 does a tremendous disservice to the Wii and it's playerbase.
The Wii doesn't need to try and emulate the other consoles. By offering it's own unique and bizarre gameplay experiences, it has become the most popular console on the planet.

I personally wouldn't blame Sega if they ended up canceling all M rated games in development for Wii. Its a shame that these other wise good games are not selling but the demographic (for the most part) for the wii is much different than the people who come on this website.

Well, considering all the money they're not spending on marketing for these "mature" games, it's not like they're losing money. Vicious cycle. I was slightly intrigued by The Conduit, but FPS just isn't my favorite genre, with a few exceptions (Metroid Prime series, Bioshock, L4D, and a few others). The Conduit, as a game, just didn't grab my interest. The Conduit as an ideal did. But from what I've seen, I'm not sure how much it would sell on any console. I give them props for trying, and I'll probably at least give the game a rent (I do love Wii control for shooters). And I'm really looking forward to The Grinder. It's just a shame that a certain sect of gamers pinned all their hopes on this one game.
