Quantcast

Dan Kaufman, the lead game designer of Wii first-person shooter The Conduit, has said that he hopes to include voice chat in multiplayer.

"We are exploring the possibility for voice chat," he said. "It is too early to make any promises along these lines, but we agree it could make the game even better!"

How this would be possible -- there's no headset peripheral currently available for the Wii -- is beyond me. It seems unlikely that Kaufman knows something that we don't; between friend codes and the lack of any real communication in any online titles, it seems Nintendo would rather play it safe than sorry. Even crazier is the thought that High Voltage would ship their own peripheral along with the game, but if it opens the flood gates for free communication on the Wii, I'm all for it.

The Conduit is set to release in early 2009.

I still don't know why Nintendo hasn't implemented DS connectivity as a makeshift headset. It already has a microphone and speakers built in... Hell, it has a headset! Why not just do that until they actually come to their senses and release a headset that connects to the bottom of the Wii remote wirelessly or something?

At least Boom Blox and others have proved that you don't need individual Friend Codes for each game you have. I don't think voice chat is out of the question, and if they can pull it off, I'll buy the game just to show Nintendo that this is what we want.

Well, from my understanding (I have no experience with the games I'm about to mention) Battalion Wars and EA games snake around the the Wii code problem, right? So there's one hurdle down . . .

There was a test a whileback, I think, revealing that about 60(?) Wii remotes could be connected to the wii at one time. Perhaps a headset can tap into one of these ports?

Also, Nintendo is doing usb peripheral testing. Maybe that includes a headset, or at the very least, Nintendo developing the APIs for USB/Headset/Wii interaction?

doesnt the wii support bluetooth. if they could pack in a cheap $15 cellphone set and jupstart wii voice chat that would be awsome. What are their feelings on storage space?

@jdub

Most recently only "geeks and otaku" want more storage space, which we allegedly aren't supposed to interpret as a big "screw off nerds!" to anyone that wants more storage.

that said, they are hiring testers for USB peripherals. No details there, but the prevailign theory/wish is that means they're working on a storage solution/memory space option.

This game looks abysmal, and if it was coming out for any other system people would be running for the hills.

And no, I'm not talking about the graphics. Go to their website and read the story outline. I've seen porn with better plot.

@Mr Bas

Alright! Let's settle this with some Conduit and voice chat (or skype), when it's released.

Give me a reason to play this over a PC FPS, and I'll see. As it stands, not seeing much that would show that.

I feel its gonna be cool in its own right. The bricks of hate are clearly stacked against High Voltage, but I think they'll clear them and create another fun Wii game.

Voice chat on Wii, when Nintendo won't even do it themselves properly, is commendable. Such a shame Nintendo is too shit scared to sort it out though. Could still be to The Conduits' benefit, if they can pull it off well.

Hey, if they could come up with a special proprietary Guitar Hero-specific and Arkanoid-specific peripherals for the DS, why shouldn't these guys be able to come up with something?

Nintendo's conversative stance with it's consoles really pises me off. I dont want to have to convince my lazy friends to download skype (they still havent, they're lazy) just so I can have voip.

The Conduit looks nice. Voice chat, I'll buy into that, but I don't want the 13-year-old-with-racial-slurs on the side. Hopefully this title will please.

Why don't they just put the original Perfect Dark or Goldeneye on the VC? That would cure a lot of peoples hunger for gunpowder and blood.
