But then there's the Sonic games. I will never know what wizardry Sonic Team pulled out for that those games. Humming Chemical Plant Zone just typing that out.
Rocket Knight is great, but the SNES is still better.
Similar to music & movies from the past -- it was good because artists got creative despite the limitations of tech. Nowadays eye-candy is prioritized over gameplay.
So when comparing the controllers its only the BASIC controllers that came with the system ignoring the better controllers that Sega came out with later.
But when it comes to backwards compatibility its all fine and dandy to throw in an unlicensed 3rd party peripheral for the SNES?
I'm calling shenanigans right there!
Unlicensed? He was talking about the Super Game Boy. That was made by Nintendo. He was talking about the dual-cart thing just to mention its existence, he wasn't factoring that into the score.
And the category is backwards compatibility the Gameboy came out after the SNES. How is a peripheral that allows you to play your newer games on your older system "backwards" compatibility?
I'm just saying my shenanigans stand.
As far as the design goes, he didn't mention the completely USELESS volume buttons on the front of the Genesis. NOBODY used them. If you say you did you're a liar and will burn in hell.
And if you are talking about controllers that eventually came out for the Genesis, you might as well throw in other SNES controllers like the Super Advantage.
Even if you consider the six-button Genesis controller, I still say it pales in comparison to the standard SNES controller. A six-button layout like that is perfect for an arcade stick, but it's a little inefficient for a thumb-operated game pad.
Controllers: Did you guys ever tried the Arcade Power Stick????Seriously great quality and autofire and great materials maybe even better than the almighty Neo Geo one!!!!
Beat hem Up:STreet of Rage 2 is the Scrolling Beat them up not the 1 come on!!!!!!!!
TREASURE GAME!!!!
The best Shoot hem up Thunder Force IV!!!!!
Micro Machines 2 with controllers plug on the cart so that you could play easily 4 ppl and even 8 2 ppl for controllers i have done that at my grandma house......AMAZING!!!!!!
So yeah great video by the way i love the video of you as a child, really good stuff and i am buying back a Snes and a Mega drive now!!!!!!!
That being said...
The SNES is PACKED with INSTANT CLASSICS. I think anyone who doesn't recognize the strength of its library is delusional. Sega will always be my personal favorite, but I admit the SNES was definitely the victor in that "battle" for many reasons.
Bit it didn't have no ma-fuckin Alien Soldier, that's for damn sure.
looking back I would say. The MD was king at the first half of the 16bit era, SNES 2nd half.
I disagree with him on the sega megadive controller, It had a great ergonomic shape and the d-pad blows the NES cross type out of the water. I agree that 4 buttons is better than 3 although the 6 button can't be ignored. To do so is like ignoring the Wii+ mote or the PS1 analog.
Also although many of the best em ups on the MD had smaller sprites like Streets of Rage 1 it's very much down to personal choice imo. Golden Axe was fantastic & Streets of Rage 2 more than makes up for 1.
And yeah Treasure was a massive boon the the MD later in life.
One of the few things SEGA had going for it, besides a few exclusive games, was the fact it came in black. Sleek, sexy black.
Nintendo's answer to Treasure was Rare.
Donkey Kong Country I,II,III, Killer Instinc, Battle toads
Rare>>>Treasure
And I'm a huge Treasure fan
My vote has nothing to do with the game library, sounds, controllers or hardware. Here's the story (all true)
I traded a friend a bad ass Redline bike for his SNES and a few games. A few months later he was fiending for his SNES back but had long since sold the bike so instead he offered a fully operational 1975 Toyota Celica coupe slammed on rims. I miss that car.
Anyway... I couldn't trade my Genesis for squat. So to me that = WIN for Nintendo.
It helps though that the SNES housed some of my absolute favorite games and game soundtracks. The SNES and PS1 are easily my favorite systems ever made. Choosing between those two is a tough call. Much tougher for me personally than choosing between SNES and Genesis. Though I still think I'd say the SNES is overall my favorite system ever made.
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy III (VI)
Illusion of Gaia
Earthbound
Super Metroid
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Super Mario World
Donkey Kong Country
Super Mario RPG
Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
Super Double Dragon
Super Castlevania IV
All of those are some of my favorite games ever made.
Secret of Evermore I read all about it in Nintendo Power and would have got it but I think I was saving my $$ for the N64 at that point.
I need to beat either FF6, Earthbound or SOE before I start another game. I never played past a couple hours of FF6.. made it at least halfway through Earthbound and never started SOE. Suggestions? Anyone?
Killed themselves after the Dreamcast. I was lucky, I had people to talk me off the ledge. Amazing people that told me "You've not played Rez yet". Just what I needed.
Gun to my head, I'd take the Mega Drive. I'd enquire as to why I couldn't pick the Amiga for 16-bit or maybe argue with the gunman that the Neo Geo is also 16 bit and don't buy into the 24-bit nonsense, but I'd pick it over the SNES.
As a guy who had a Genesis as a kid and subscribed to Sega Visionaries until it stopped being produced, I have to say that the SNES was -obviously- better.
Don't get me wrong, the Genesis is a great console with tons of great games. As you said yourself, Contra Hard Corps is superior to Contra 3, and I'm probably the only Castlevania fan in the world to not love SCIV. Also, while I'm not big on sports titles, the Genesis certainly wins there. In terms of exclusives, the Sonic games are just amazing, and, as you noted, Treasure really was phenomenal in those days.
However, that said.. the SNES had too many games that just weren't touched at all by the Genesis. FF4-6 (well.. 2 and 3 here in the U.S. at the time), Chrono Trigger, Mario Kart, Super Mario World, DKC 1-3, Super Metroid.. I mean.. come on. Also, -most- (but not all) games that were released on both were superior on the SNES.
The Genesis was highly competitive with one of the best consoles of all time. That's high praise. However, it just wasn't as good as the SNES.
I had, owned, and loved both. But it's actually kind of funny... i sold my Genesis and all of my games to afford the crazy expensive ($120!!!) Ogre Battle on SNES from FunCoLand.
