The boardgame revolution continues: Lost Cities photo

Gamers that aren't into the indie board game scene have been heard scowling about the appearance of many beloved board games on Xbox Live. I understand that it's not their cup of tea, but the board-to-videogame phenomenon is only growing in popularity, and people who happily played Settlers of Catan and Carcasonne on the weekends are pleased as can be.

Lost Cities is the latest in that trend, adapted from the Rio Grande board game of the same name. Designed by Reiner Knizia, the two player game challenges you to draw from a card pool to amass points while exploring Brazilian rain forests, endless desert, ancient volcanoes and deep oceans. Play is simple and takes 30 minutes or less, which makes it ideal to play with a guest or at game gatherings. The board game won the International Gamers Award for best 2 player game in 2000.

The Live version is due out this Spring and will cost you 800 Microsoft points. This version will also have a 2 versus 2 player mode in addition to the standard 2 player, which will be great for online matches and such. I was always the kid mesmorized back in school whenever history class turned to ancient exploration, so is the sort fo thing that makes me twitch with delight. It likely won't be the game to convert the anti-boardgame set, but it looks like it could keep tabletop nerds happy (ahem, like me.)

You know with all these board games coming to XBox Live you would think that Curse of Dracula or Last Night on Earth would make its way there.

I'm a big fan of real board games, all types. I like the whole videogame adaptation because it introduces me to new games. Like Carcasonne, I've never heard of that game before its XBLA appearance. Sadly I don't have an Xbox but a friend of mine later bought me the real board game and I love it.

I'm awaiting the digital remake of Arkham Horror, A Game of Thrones, and pretty much anything else from Fantasy Flight Games.

I had not heard about this until now. Hooray!

I'd love to see Twilight Imperium appear in some form on XBLA. The board game version is a beast but when you subtract all of the manual tasks (all those cards and counters!) associated with the game I think it could be played in a reasonable amount of time. Also, it will never happen.

I am one of those who were always intrigued by these new school board games - but not enough to buy them in a store.

XBLA is a great repository for games of this type - and I ended up loving Settlers of Catan - played it late into the night many times.

Definitely will try this one out and will buy it if I like it.

EXCELLENT! I love this game... but if Ron is right, sounds like it could use some work before release

"I was always the kid mesmorized back in school whenever history class turned to ancient exploration, so is the sort fo thing that makes me twitch with delight."

I'm assuming you've never played the game, because the theme of exploration is entirely pasted on...you basically play numbered cards in ascending order. Not to say it's a bad game by any means, just don't get your hopes up for a Tomb Raider-like experience:)

"You need to read."

Unless they added some flavor text the only thing you need to read in the analog version is a number on the card. You can't even read that? That's discouraging.

When this comes out on XBox Live, you have to do the XBLA review instead of Topher. I don't think he'd do it justice.
