Quantcast

The best pinball machine ever was created, but it never made it to market. Those dicks at Williams HQ told their people to create the next big thing in pinball back in the late 1990s, and a team of pinball pros did just that. We're talking holograms and explosions and sh*t so cool that they called it the "future of pinball." Sadly, that machine had no future.

You see, the pinball market was going downhill. Williams was making money creating slot machines, and the pinball side of their business was dragging them down. Sadly, the team that created this ultimate pinball machine was fired, and the machine was never made.

If some of this sounds familiar, then perhaps you've heard of or have seen the 2007 doc Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball. I had not heard of this film until I came across the trailer on Topless Robot today. This sounds like a fantastic film, doesn't it?

If you're interested, there's more info on the documentary here.

I might be interested in this, but I heard some good things about The King of Kong, too. Decisions, decisions...

Just goes to show one arm bandits are just like very fast crappy pinball machines. I am sorry but I will stick to letting my quarter give
me at least a little entertainment. They aren't food for some machine.

Also it is sad how pinball wasn't making enough money too let this come out. Magic makes enough money to get a facelift whenever it needs it but not the pinball machine.

Is there something I'm missing here? Because two of the Pinball 2000 machines (Revenge From Mars and Star Wars: Episode 1 were released. I've played them both. They had holograms and explosions. Or are you referring to some of the other planned Pinball 2000 machines

Really sloppy article writing.... do some googling and you'll see (as guncannon mentioned) that they released a few of these games

I PLAYED THAT REVENGE OF MARS GAME it was fucking awesome. the back screen was a touch screen and had martians on bar stools and if the ball hit them they would go flying off.

I love Pinball. It's always been the cool, Fonzie-like cousin of Video Games. These machines looked incredible; I wish I had a chance to see these things in action. Looks like I'll have to order this DVD.

That was heartbreaking.

The way the guy says "Why would they do that?" at the end just made me sad. I want to watch this movie.

Like most ancient thing in the world, pinball suffered a slow and painful death... for me (as an avid arcade-goer) is heartbreaking to see some of those wonderful machines laying around in god-awful conditions. I still have fond memories from some pinballs. For me, it reminds me out of the good time I used to have with my dad.

So this DVD is going to be a "MUST-BUY".

The extra features on the DVD are even better than the film itself. There's footage of Pinball Circus, a crazy huge pinball machine that never went into production but two fully functional prototypes exist. The whereabouts of one are unknown, but the other is available for public play at The Pinball Hall of Fame & Museum in Las Vegas, along with a shitload of other machines. There are a few vids on youtube as well.

@ timtheterrible - get King of Kong, it is one of the best documentaries to come out in the last few years. I would watch this but I imagine it just doesn't have the story and happenstance of King of Kong.

As for this "article," When I was in highschool (in the 90s) the Revenge from Mars pinball machine was at the local bowling alley (COSMIC bowling alley) in the tiniest of tiny towns, Mass. To say "You'll never see it" is wrong. Maybe you've never seen it, but I bet a lot of us STILL could.

Like mentioned I've played pinball games with that technology. It was used, and at quite a few arcades I've gone to. You might see it, just not now when pinball machine are only in the corners at bowling ball alleys or the very rare video arcades.

This seems like an awesome pinball documentary maybe similar to King of Kong. Tilt save the pinball.

I hated those hybrid pinball/video machines. They weren't good pinball machines and they weren't good regular video games.

It's too bad Williams couldn't make money making pinball machines anymore. They were the best. Stern still makes them, I believe, but they aren't the same.

What are you talking about "never see it"? Two Pinball2000 tables were built. Revenge from Mars and Star Wars The Phantom Menace. They were actually extremely popular at the time. Sadly there just wasn't much money to be made from it.

I'd heard about these "unreleased" machines before, so when I spotted Revenge from Mars on honeymoon, I got my wife to take a couple of pics...

Having just seen this story come around again, I've uploaded the photos to my flickr, a blurry one and a not-so-blurry one!

As others have said, the gameplay is fairly average, but it's worth a play if you're in Portland, OR!

Good documentary, watched it a while back. Very sad that the pinball division of Williams managed to achieve the impossible, yet still got shut down.

They have a Revenge From Mars table at a pizza place in town. Not one of my favorite tables, seems to be a bit cheap. The holograms are neat, but as far as the gameplay goes it's no Medieval Madness or Twilight Zone. Still worth checking out if you ever seen one.

Wait, I was reading through this thinking I was in no way involved, but I remember playing Revenge From Mars in a laserzone. If they've still got it in the storeroom, I should have a look at acquiring it, it was a bloody awesome machine.

A big point about these Pinball 2000 games was that they were interchangeable. You could take out the Revenge from Mars playfield and hook up a Star Wars Episode 1 playfield with little effort. Or you could slip in another Revenge playfield while the other one was getting repaired. Sort of like a JAMMA style motherboard replacement except the motherboard was the playfield. For example, at my nearby arcade, there is a Star Wars playfield in a Revenge From Mars pinball cabinet.

I've always wanted to open a bar called "Pinball Wizard" and have darta, billiards and a shitload of pinball cabs.

Also, Marvel Super Heroes. "INFINITY!"

A LOT of places had the Pinball 2000 machines....I've played both the Revenge From Mars game and Episode 1 at several different locations. Article writer needs to look shit up before making broad statements about never getting to see it. Just because you aren't familiar with it doesn't mean it didn't make it to market. Fucking moron...check your goddamn facts next time and stop being a lazy writer. What a hunk of shit you've written here.

Oh, so day of the week dictates the amount of time and research someone puts into their job reporting something? Yeah, that argument would go over great at the Washington Post, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, or even Entertainment Weekly. Don't make fucking excuses for lazy articles with misinformation.

Hey, I'm going to write an article about how the Sega Dreamcast would have been Sega's greatest console but nobody got to play it because it caused the demise of Sega's console division. Yeah, that would be totally accurate as well except for the fact that the DAMN THING WAS FUCKING RELEASED. Same thing with Pinball 2000...this guy did a total half-ass job so don't defend him.

P.S. When they can even be bothered to read a Wiki article to see that it was released...well, that is just super fucking lazy.
