The best non-profit ever supplies soldiers with free videogames photo

If a woman did this for me, I would marry her too. That is, if I was a man in the military.  The more I think about that idea, the more confused I get, so I think it's best to just move on. Fun For Our Troops was started by a military wife named Stefanie Doctor Shea. The idea behind the non-profit was to help deployed military personnel to relax between missions by helping them to feel as if they were at home. The couple were both active Wii gamers before Sgt. Shea shipped off for duty in Iraq.

Dana Blackman Brady is Stefanie's partner-in-crime behind Fun For Our Troops and is married to a former Army ranger herself. While it's no surprise there is no official support for the cause from the Defense department, the women have worked out a program that allows them to get the games to the troops, which Stefanie describes below:

We are working on an official website which will allow troops to sign themselves up as recipients or family members can sign them up. They will also be able to tell us what, if any, systems they do have so we can donate appropriate games.

Hopefully the site will be up in the next week or so (we have someone donating their services to build the site).  We are willing to work with all branches of the military but the recipients themselves must be on a deployment.  Our intention is that the equipment we send over will be passed on to troops in the unit that will replace them.

This is just incredibly cool, presenting the absolute reverse of the stereotypical wife or girlfriend who constantly complains about her spouse's gaming habit.  If you should want to donate to the cause, check out the Web site, which happily accepts any form of gaming related donation from consoles to gift cards.

I fail to see the incredible coolness. It seems to me that it just makes it more comfortable to invade and occupy a country and kill the resident brown people.

This is awesome, great way to give soldiers a tiny bit more comfort while doing a shitty job.

You fail so hard fyre.

Very cool.

Also, is that woman's middle name really Doctor? That's sad.

This sounds like a great idea, coupled with how active my Dad and I are in Veterans affairs this sounds like a great thing to get involved in. It helps a lot when the home office is 5 minutes from my hometown...

Awesome. My best friend is in Iraq now, and from our conversations online, it sounds like they could REALLY use the distraction.

Yeah, I've heard that soldiering is 99% extreme boredom, with random intermittent terror = recipe for disaster and long-term mental health problems. So good on them for doing this. On the other hand, it sure would be nice if the government did something like this. :/

@grrza

it'd be nicer if the government didn't have the soldiers go over there in the first place.

still, this is a pretty cool.

Probably the coolest thing I've heard all day. I'm definitely gonna check the site out and see if I can contribute.

I had a good friend who took about 6 trips to Iraq last year with the airforce, and his highlights were playing gears of war with his e buddies. He told me that they were constantly going through 360s to the point they were melting because they never turned them off. I think it's a great thing. Any asshole who's got something to say about all soldiers doing a shitty job, is an asshole, asshole. Maybe you should've voted.

@fyre
And yet it's sometimes necessary, when people want to kill you. Unless of course, you know, you're okay with dying a painful death.

That said, I don't support wars and I don't think we should be in Iraq to the extent we are now. I wouldn't call myself a true pacifist, but I'm... a practical pacifist? I don't know. You get me. I respect the sacrifices the soldiers make (despite the fact that many appear to be assholes, something I've heard from former soldiers and soldiers' wives), but I have no respect for war itself.

Wait, why am I explaining myself? I forget. Oh well.

@twinkiebots: I think you already figured out what I was getting at, but I meant the job they have to do is shitty, not that they do a shitty job doing what they do. Nearly all of them (except in a few rare cases that get dredged up endlessly by nimrods who seem to believe that all soldiers sign up for a chance to murder foreigners) do a fantastic job at the shitty job they're asked to do. Wait, now I'm confused.

Reading half of these comments on Veteran's day disgusts me. It seems half of your interpretations of Veterans are entirely wrong and based off of assumptions you have seen from an Oliver Stone movie. People like your grandparents and in my case my father fought so that others would not have to. That in itself is deserving of thanks. And to assume that soldiers want to go to a foreign country and kill the residents is entirly wrong and stupid to say. I highly doubt many people want to be sent to a warzone where the constant threat of death or the loss of a close friend is entirely possible. Thats enough for now....Thank a Veteran ffs.

it'd be a better non-profit if they lobbied to bring the soldier's home and get them rehabilitated into civilian life after witnessing the horrors of a real war, rather than just giving them something fun to do while over there.
