The Beatles: Rock Band defeats Guitar Hero 5 photo

Evil publisher Activision recently claimed that Guitar Hero 5 outsold MTV Games' The Beatles: Rock Band and maintained its dominance in the music game genre. However, it looks like Activision may have told an evil lie, because the NPD results have come in and a Rock Band title appears to have finally bested a Guitar Hero game.

Rock Band is hailed by our own Nick Chester as a superior product to Guitar Hero, and there's no denying that Activision and Red Octane have essentially been copying everything Harmonix does with the series. However, with a little help from The Beatles, it seems that Harmonix is in the driving seat, with the puppetry of John Lennon's corpse proving more popular than the puppetry of Kurt Cobain's.

The challenge of course will be if Rock Band can now ride this momentum to thoroughly displace Guitar Hero as the leading music game. The Beatles is what won people over more than the quality of the game itself, so we'll have to wait until the next round of games before seeing if that quality has kept people sticking around.

What do you think? Will Guitar Hero's deep pockets and mainstream name allow it to push Rock Band back down, or has this foothold given EA and Harmonix the boost they need to become the kings of music?

Sadly I wouldn't be surprised if The Beatles: Rock Band lost to Guitar Hero in Europe.

This is a great victory for music games.
Yes, I hate Guitar Hero. I want it to die.

I wonder if Act/EA are going to finally rub penises together and release a Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band game.

Love it. I recently heard an interview with Greg LoPiccolo (of Harmonix) on the Sound Opinions podcast. The Harmonix team seems to have a greater reverence for the music, and is more willing to branch out beyond the typical mainstream "guitar god" fare. Not only that, but their note charting is more musical, even when it's less "difficult". Let the hardcore have their twitchy note-charts and creepy Cobain puppets.

Listen: Guitar Hero has some great things going for it. But plastic instruments are expensive and space-consuming. Although it's easy to hate Activision nowadays, and we take great pleasure when they're less popular at retail, I've been following Harmonix since Frequency (which I still play) and they deserves every inch of their success - they just make a better product.

Check out that Sound Opinions podcast from a few weeks ago. Mr. LoPiccolo also weighs in on the whole "real versus plastic instruments" psuedo-debate.

As much as I hate the Beetles, Rock Band is by far a better game. Guitar Hero may be all flashy, but they miss the point of the actual music. I can't tell you how many times (as a seasoned professional musician) that I'll hit notes to a song that Guitar Hero screwed up or added some weird ending tag that isn't part of a song and doesn't fit in the song. Rock Band at least does the justice of putting the song in CORRECTLY without the shitty additives or missing notes.

Victory!

Ironically GH5 was the first decent GH in a while.

The only negatives about this is more bands are gonna want that band game treatment. It's a matter of will Harmonix stand their ground and continue to push RB as a platform or puss out.

Whoop!

Really though, everyone I know that plays these games plays Rock Band. Maybe they're all just casual. But except for Best Buy, I still haven't seen World Tour or GH5.

I think it will help, but as you said, the main draw for casual people here (ie the people who don't research a game beyond the name) is the Beatles. I expect Rock Band 3 to close the gap some with Guitar Hero 6 but the GH brand is still too huge.

I'm kind of interested about Band Hero vs Lego Rock Band. That might provide some more clues.

Own and love all the games, though I do prefer the GH series. Dont care what anyone else thinks, I think it's a great series.

It was so obvious which was the better game.

Why does EA/Harmonix want to quote EW
and NYTimes reviews of Rock Band. Who reads USA Today for game reviews?

It's like these reviews are propping up mediocre reporting in newspapers today.

I'd rather get my reviews from a source that deals with games professionally and not some placating kiss ass junior staff writer who got to do the review because he's the only one on staff who owns a game console.

Whatevs. Good job harmonix.

@BluDesign
Because people not familiar with gaming will read those and (A) recognize the name and (B) will think "Gee here's a real journalist outlet praising one of those crazy new fangled video game thingies. Must be something to it."

Excellent! Rock Band is way better than GH, and it still erks me how they took over after GH2 and drove the series into the ground. Its about time Harmonix got a shot to dish out some comeuppance.

I think it should be rather humbling for activision, time for them to look at what they need to to change these results next year. But knowing how they handle this stuff they'll probably just charge more for it next year in Europe.

hmm, my first time over to dtoid in a while, and i see a headline that i read days ago. pretty much defines the dtoid experience for me. as for the article, i'm pretty sure that the music industry is going to ruin the music game genre in the next coupla years, so enjoy it while you can. i, for one, am never going to own a plastic guitar game. i think i might just stop coming to dtoid as well. i'm sighting jim sterling's stellar journalistic skills as my reason for bailing on you guys. let me know when jonathan starts writing regularly again, would ya?

As a Rock Band guy and Beatles fan I am most pleased. Must admit, though, that GH5 is actually the best GH game in a while. I did get my copy used, cause Activision can suck it :D. The game may be good but their business practices still suck.

Glad to see the masses finally come around.

Haha Beatles beat GH5 even though they gave out a free game with it,,,,which tells a lot. I think Activision has finally saturated the GH name enough to where casual gamers are even taking notice,

Love it! I think Activisions only hope now is to release a new GH game every month so they can saturate the market and try to get RB to die with them.

I loved Beatles Rock Band and I'll be playing it again every month when the DLC comes out for it. In that respect, I think they've beaten Guitar Hero. I couldn't care less about most of the DLC they put out for GH stuff. But RockBand Beatles has ensured that I'll be buying every piece of DLC that they release. That's a winning strategy.

Good on them! I didn't get RB:Beatles....because I donlt like the beatles. I thought GH5 was incredibly solid. I think this is a small but good victory for Harmonix. But, I don't really see it keeping momentum for the long run though. Cause really, would it have sold anywhere near as much if it didn't have "Beatles" on the front? I mean that word alone is going to make even a non/casual gamer stop and pick it up if they like the beatles. Just "Rockband" isn't going to snare anyone unless they know the product.
