The battle for oil rages on: Frontlines: Fuel of War demo hits Xbox Live photo

You can never have too many first-person shooters, right? Right!? THQ and Kaos Studios hope so, as a demo for their upcoming FPS (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC), Frontlines: Fuel of War, was released today on Xbox Live.

Fontlines: Fuel of War takes place in a not-too-distant future in which everything's gone to hell. The game takes a look at what would happen if China and Russia decided to team up and form the "Red Star Alliance" in a world with widespread depression and lacking natural resources.

Based on what I saw in this demo, Frontlines is missing that extra layer of polish that sets games like Call of Duty 4 apart from say, Prey or The Darkness. The game doesn't come out for a while (2/12/08), so there's still some time left to iron things out.

To me, Frontlines: FoW felt like it'd be perfect material for the bargain bin. To those of you who downloaded the demo: would you agree and if not, why?

I'm no scientist, but it seems like one should try to battle away from the pipeline and refineries if possible.

I've been playing the PC multiplayer beta and after the last update its been quite entertaining. The game takes awhile to get into and understand the nuances but once you have the basics its actually more fun that BF2.

yeah it lacks the polish, but i'll give it props for attempting to do the story it seems to be doing. oh, and controlling little vehicles that shoot and/or blow up was pretty neat.

Every good soldier knows that the more you blow up, the more likely you are to win.

@MechaMonkey: You got me there. I noticed that tactic in the gameplay clip; the commanding officer is yelling "Put the fire out now!" as his men are lobbing grenades into the refinery.

Fucking stupidest premise for a game...EVER. Fucking stupidest title ever. Fucking generic visuals, just... uggh.

Fuck this game. I don't fault you for enjoying it if the gameplay is good, but if you think for a second that there's aything at all "cool" or interesting about it, you're an imbecile.

Ron is 100% right -- the intro was by far the best part of the whole thing.

@topher

I dont understand why your so ramped up about this? this is a pretty realistic premise. war for oil could happen in the next few decades, and i think making a game on that is pretty cool.

Anyone else get an error telling them they can't download the demo due to its rating or whatever? I have everything allowed and it's a Rated Pending title, still it doesn't let me DL.

Meh. Looks even more generic than Crysis or Killzone 2. MaxVest's comment wins, though.

You'd think they would use war-machines that didn't run on the one thing they lacked, eh? Oh wait, that would make too much sense.

The game looks like it won't be worse than Blacksite.

If my 360 wasn't broken I would be playing this right now. It looks like Battlefield if it was good and not a buggy piece of shit.

But apparently people are saying that it's kind of lame but I'm holding out hope for the retail release. If I do get it, I'll buy it on PC. Hopefully they will patch the fun into it because I felt this had a lot of potential.

You can never go wrong with either
A: Blowing up Nazis
B: Blowing up Commies
C: Blowing up Commie Nazis

And since it's choice B, I'll go and give this one a shot, even if it's for the epic intro.

Thats where I have to disagree SourGr8pes. I pine for the day when we get a game where I can blow the fuck out of an endlessly spawning mass of 6'5" muscle bound square jawed clean cut white skinned American jock fucks. Me and the rest of the world.

Played the demo, and I really liked it, but it needs a little bit of polish. The controls (mainly on how the aiming feels very floaty) need work, as well as vehicle (NOT drones, those were plain awesome.)
Keep in mind however, that the multiplayer is where this game is at.

Do those idiots know that they'd probably have enough oil to last if they weren't fueling their war machines with it?

How is this premise any different from what's really going on if you look around? Sure, we're a few logical (political) steps removed from that, but most wars are just about limited resources and who controls them...

That said, a whole new genre of literalist games based on non-dramatized, completely real events would be awesome. Games as art indeed. Who's ready for some literary criticism in their games?

Considering this game is a multiplayer affair, the single player demo was a terrible fucking move. Especially considering how much of an unispired battlefield clone it comes off as. BF2 was one of my favorite games, and I've been hoping for something as large scale and well conceived to hit consoles, and it looks like thats still not in the cards. And the whole fighting over oil isn't exactly a groundbreaking turn, and it needs to be handled much more maturely than the cheesy intro suggests.

Wow I can't believe idiots are complaining about it not being original enough. Kaos rocks at making squad based games and so many people jumped on the CoD4 bandwagon(like THAT'S an original game) that it won't hurt to give frontlines a chance.

Secondly, It just takes everything about Quake Wars and makes it better. There was a spread about it in Games For Windows last year. One of the best things is that you can destroy structures by shooting at them. It's not scripted in that way; if the enemy is firing at you while you're in a building, you can't stay in there long for cover.
