The Batman Arkham Asylum demo is available photo

It’s time to play as the Bat again. The Batman Arkham Asylum demo is available for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It’s a big download. The Xbox LIVE version weighs in a little over one-and-a-half GBs. But don’t let the size fool you -- like any good demo, this Arkham Asylum piece is nothing more than a scrap of content, a mash of vertical slices of early conflicts in the game.

I gave it a spin earlier this afternoon. I loved the visual touches to the environments, and came away annoyed with the appearance of the minor characters. Gordon and the guards and thugs look like aged wrestlers. I also walked away uncertain of the combat system. You’re only allowed to use a fistful of attacks, and frankly, the AI wasn’t too bright. Then again, perhaps the demo was just trying to hold my hand.

I want to know what you guys think. Did the demo convince you to buy it day one? Would you have liked to seen more? Do you think it sucked? Discuss this thing.

I think the demo was just right. They obviously wanted us to get a hang for the combat and other things like detective mode. I liked it.

If you don't like Batman: "Hmm, It's okay, It's not amazing, but it's not bad..."
If you do like Batman: "Oh my god, this is fucking awesome, fuck yes, oh fuck yes."

It's the best comic based game I've ever played. I'd like to buy it but not sure it's a 60 game for me.normally I get multi-platform for the 360 but this might be one to get for ps3.

I hope that was only a sampling of the devices and manners you have at your disposal to take down the enemy. And will you only be able to grapple gargoyles?

In any case they did a fine job and I'm looking forward to a game that wasn't even on my radar (licensed games are almost always without fail rubbish) thanks to the demo.

I think they nailed the feel of Batman just right. I really liked the more free form sections where you get a lot more choice in how you dispatch your enemies. I didn't really like the head on combat sections though. The free flow combat system (or whatever it's called) felt too on rails for me. It reminded me too much of a glorified QTE.

I thought the Demo was a little short for my tastes, I was expecting another room or a little sample of a boss fight. What I did play, I fell madly in love with. I love skulking around Arkham, I even found two Riddler Trophies.

I heard that the PS3 version allows you to play as The Joker. Anybody know if that's still a go?

I like it so far. The battles remind me of something from Prince of Persia, where you're fighting and you kinda wait for them to attack to make your most powerful counters deal with them.

The Stealth element was pretty cool and the fear you can instill on the enemies was ok. I don't think this game showed enough, and I predict a rent, but it's damn cool playing Batman in a stealthy kind of way.

@zombielifecoach, pretty sure PS3 still gets the Joker

Hate the slow motion combat.
Hate the QTEs for no reason.
Love the swooping stealth play!
Curious about the boss fights.

I immediately started it again as soon as I finished it. I really like how it forces you to think your way through the environments instead of just using straight combat, although merely swinging back and forth between gargoyles to lose enemies seemed kind of silly to be honest (can they really not see that far over?). Once you learn to really used the "Detective Mode" is opens a lot of new way to do things. I really like the idea of a thinkin' man's brawler.

The combat system itself I really enjoyed, however. It was simplistic, yes, but I felt it built up a nice flow in the bigger fight at the beginning of the demo. I didn't mind that it only really had two attack buttons and the moves were limited. Most games that try to boast super deep fighting mechanics usually end up with the player only using a handful of combos anyway, so I think in this game it really works.

Also, as much as I wish they nailed the look of the characters, some characters (Gordon in particular) look huge and ridiculous. But outside of that, it's quite the looker.

In short, this will be a day one purchase for me, but I'm also a huge Batman fan period. I could imagine someone who isn't such a big fan of the universe and character maybe being a bit more apprehensive, but I loved what (very) little I saw.

When a demo tries holding my man, I'm all 'oh no you don't! that's MY man!'.

Downloading it now. I approach with caution. I think the last Batman game I played and liked was on the Genesis.

I didn't really care for the demo. The combat felt awkward with the pauses and cinematic takedowns. The camera swung around a lot and made me motion sick after a few minutes. I'm not a fan of the graphics. Everything looked plasticy and improperly proportioned; Batman's muscles are huge and his arms are too short. To be fair, I haven't been interested in the title since its announcement.

Also, it does look a little ugly cause it's Unreal Engine 3, and the graphics aren't anything new.

It was just -OK- in my book. I've had reservations about this title since I saw the first cut scenes and thought they looked really awkward and janky. Hell, I would even call the animation in the cutscenes "terrible".

The AI was dumb as a rock. You can literally WALK around and through groups of enemies and watch them kick and punch at the air. The swooping is -alright- but are there going to be gargoyles everywhere in the game for no reason just so I can swoop onto them? Its not really environmental movement if there is only ONE particular thing in the environment that I can latch onto.

I'm really hoping there is more variety and depth in the full release. After playing the demo its definitely going to be a rental for me when it comes out.

The narrative and stuff was really great, great stuff for a Batman game, really enjoyed that. But, the regular combat I thought was ok, just came off too automated to me, it was fun, but I can see it wearing thin if it doesn't get mixed up later.

But, the more stealthy part was really fun to me, I had a good time just dropping down kicking dudes and just being able to hook out there immediately, being able to do that just felt so perfect for it being a Batman game.

I wish the demo was a little longer, though. Overall I'm interested. But the demo wasn't long enough to grab me, I was just at the point where I really got the hang of it and it ended.

the demo was a total boner killer. It wasn't bad, but too short. I'll def rent this title, but I agree, graphics are nothing new, some ol' unreal engine. I do have to say I liked hanging upside down, dropping in front of them, then grappling back up and they're like, where'd he go. I hope all the computer AI isnt that stupid.

I love Batman, and this game isn't doing to for me so far. It feels totally average, with the exception of...

1) The voice work, which is excellent

2) The art direction, which is shit.

Played the PC version with the graphics CRANKED. Looked pretty good with a few ugly pixelly spots. The Physx immersion is a joke, from what I've seen. I saw the fog realistically blew away as I walked into it, so that's cool. The spiderwebs didn't move at all, and the cape and flag movement is neat, but could easily be scripted.

From a gameplay standpoint, it's pretty great. I love how the fighting is responsive and one might say forgiving. Always hated countering in brawlers, but I haven't had any problem with this so far. Probably a day one for me.

Man that gave me just enough game to piss me off. I've been following this game for awhile now and although I was excited I didn't want to set the bar too high. But I was actually surprised how brutal the dark knight really is. Cashin' checks and Breakin' necks? I'm hooked midnight release here I come

very skeptical about this, but the demo was fun. still like to see a few reviews before i commit. maybe pre order and cancel if i don't like the buzz. why do we still need 'grapple points'?

As a longtime batman fan..this game will be a release buy. The combat feels very fluid, I loved countering and breaking a thugs arm. Grappling from gargoyle to gargoyle and glide kicking never got old for me. Gotta work on my stealth though, first go around I wasn't to stealthy. Didn't die..just didn't feel Batman enough for me.

Some minor problems though. The camera angle=annoying as all hell. Batman is huge and takes up the whole space! It pans out when you run or start fighting but when your just walking its hard as hell to see.

Other then that, the demo, while short, got me hooked.

I was impressed with the demo. It was a bit shorter than I would've liked, but it gave me a good overview of the game. I hate stealth games, and the final room was certainly challenging, but it was managable. I especially enjoyed the combat. It flowed very naturally and satisfyingly.

wayy too short. but still, i found it enjoyable, albeit easy. i can definitely see the whole, 'glorified QTE' thing in some of the combat, but it was smooth enough for me that it didnt feel tacky. very solid vision of batman, probably wont buy it, but i'll certainly rent it and check it out.

The basic brawling mechanic seemed kind of nice and like it might be fun for a little while, but would get old fast. The "stealth" mechanics however are terrible and I was bored before finishing the first room they appear in. And the "detective mode"? What the FUCK?!!? So instead of actually having gameplay you're going to give me a headache while I look around for the part that glows and go there? Pathetic.

Doesn't seem nearly as terrible as Prototype. But that's not saying much.

I had originally planned to pre-order this game but I passed on that idea when Eidos started that review crap a few weeks ago. So the demo is out and I think OK lets see if this can get me excited about the game, maybe enough to pre-order it. So did it? Well yes and no. The Batman fan in me loved the brawling, grappling, and figuring stuff out parts, but the video game fan in me wasn't so sure. From what was in the demo the brawling combat seemed very shallow. Maybe I didn't look into it enough or it wasn't fully fleshed out but I mashed 1 button the entire time only to stop occasionally to counter a guy waiting to punch me in the back. I did find out later that when the guy is on the ground you can 1 hit finish him, but it takes a while and if there are other guys still up the animation takes so damn long for Bats to finish the guy off I can't counter the other guy and I get nailed, so in groups whats the point? Also there was what seemed like a 1 hit daze option/button to hit, demo didn't tell you, and it helped a little with groups but also made it almost too easy.

I didn't care for the QTE button mashing to get a grate open. Its a gripe I've encountered before, IMO it stops the flow of the game. The grappling is OK but shows how dumb the AI can be. But you can get hurt bad if you rush in and not think things out before you do them, which in a Batman game is essential so I'm glad its in there.

This feels more like a rental for me based on the demo, maybe I'm wrong and I'll end up getting it after I read some "unbiased" reviews. But unless its got a decent length to it and doesn't get overly repetitive its most likely a rental.

Love it! One helluva demo!
The voice acting is amazing and the visuals are growing on me.
Batman and Joker look sweet, but Harley needs help. She should have been in her cute, classic jester fit. Not this slutty, goth get-up she's sporting. Oh, well... Time to get used to it. =)

it was awesome, i loved the whole hanging from gargoyles and droping down to grab someone before gliding back up and hanging them from the ceiling, i'm defeantly getting this game. The only problem i have is while in detective mode i noticed the game sometimes goes a bit pixalated not that it matters but it made the graphics look a bit poor in contrast.

Also the lip synch was a bit off but apart from that an awesome game. I hate how they always end before a boss battle, a big tease....SO ANNOYING! >_<

Day one buy. Had been before the demo, remains so.

My only little fanboy gripe: Batman's biceps are too big for his arms. Wish his cape covered more of his shoulders, too.
Okay, rant over.

This game was amazing. The simple fighting controls combined with the enthesis on your mortality make for challenging and replayable levels. Me and a friend played through the last room at least a dozen times working out different orders and more effective ways to dispose of the henchmen. The gargoyles are a little unrealistically common throughout the demo, but despite what some people are saying they're not the only thing you can grapple to, you can also grapple onto the sides of some of the walls, allowing you to climb up to higher levels. That leaves us with hope for the full game.
The henchmen are ridiculously stupid, returning to their casual stroll around the room as soon as you're out of site (albeit slightly more nervous- apparently) but what do you expect from the hired thugs in a supehero comic-based video game. They're stupid men in mass, with guns. It's the collection of bosses from the comics that we're gunna have to judge the A.I. on- or at least some of the later henchmen as we progress through the game and it inevitably becomes more difficult.
I wouldn't class myself as a Batman fan, especially not any of the games up until now, but so far this installment is looking at least a 9 out of 10.
