Every day this week, we here at Destructoid are revealing one of the five nominees for Game of the Year 2009, with the winner being announced next Monday (12/21). What game will take the crown this year?
Come and knock on our door! We’ve been waiting for you! Where the kisses are hers and hers and his, it’s time for the third Destructoid nominee!
Okay, fine, that classic ditty doesn’t work as well with new lyrics, but you can’t punish a guy for trying to shoehorn in a Three’s Company reference, can you? *tightens Mr. Furley ascot*
Since Rey is secretly creating the videos that accompany these nominations in his techno-fueled laboratory, I don’t get to see them until right before the post goes live. Because of this, I never really know how to introduce them except by just making an educated guess and saying they are amazing. Since Rey is super talented, usually that guess is quite accurate. Whew! Thank God for talented people!
The videos are obviously the stars this week, so let’s all bask in the glory of Rey’s work by watching the above video and then, if you want to, hit the jump for a text description of the 3rd nominee for Destructoid Game of the Year 2009. Ugh. Text. It’s like drinking a stale beer at the Regal Beagle. Am I right, guys?
... guys?
One thing that many people are forgetting to mention in regard to New Super Mario Bros. Wii is that it is the first 2D side-scrolling classic Mario platformer to appear on a console (not a handheld) since the Super Nintendo. That’s a long time, and alone is a reason for its significance.
But even ignoring that milestone, the reason New Super Mario Bros. Wii is one of our nominees for Game of the Year is because it is absolutely outstanding. Level design in a Nintendo game is unrivaled, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii proves this. Every stage (of which there are many!) is lusciously designed. And even better, four players can play at the same time! Sure, you can’t play online, but the game is so much fun you won’t even care. And, honestly, playing in a room with three friends is part of the wonderful experience. Jumping on your friends’ heads (in the game!) and swallowing each other with Yoshi (again, IN THE GAME!) is a blast!
New Super Mario Bros. Wii doesn’t do anything revolutionary, but it is easily one of the best Mario games in the worshipped series. And that is saying a lot.
From our original review: “If you're a fan of Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World (and who isn't?), take note -- New Super Mario Bros. Wii is your jam.”
What do you think of our third nominee? Are you a fan of New Super Mario Bros. Wii? What other two games do you think are going to make up the list of final nominees? Are you enjoying Rey’s videos thus far? And who’s the best? Chrissy, Cindy, or Terri?
Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the reveal of the 4th nominee for Destructoid Game of the Year 2009!

Yo Destructoid, I'm really happy you choose this game, I'm let you finish the dancing, but Henry Hatsworth was one of the best platformers of the last decade.
Really? A remake of a really old game that offers nothing new even though there are countless iterations of it? I know everyone likes it but still, don't you think it's time they finished milking this game for remakes?
@matrixdude - NSMB is a SEQUEL following in the tradition of older Mario games, it is not a remake of SMB. People like it because the older style of Mario games has stood the test of time and remains relevant and fun today - that's why its worthy of a nomination.
I'm not expecting this to win, but it makes me quite happy to see it among the nominees, at the very least. The final stage alone makes it among my favorite Mario games ever. Seriously, best final boss ever.
hey, a gaming site that is going to give nintendo their due. there are far too many haters out there for you to actually name this game of the year, even though we all know that it is. this just may turn out to be the highest selling game of this gen. haters should realize that without mario, none of us would be playing games these days. he single handedly recreated the industry, guys. you should actually play the game before denouncing it on the nets, it's actually quite good. it easily gets my vote for top game, but today's hardcore can't be bothered with 2d games, so i'll understand when you award a much less deserving game.
The nominations should stop now. NSMBW is the return of the king of video games: 2D Mario. After seeing all the pretenders to the throne ascend and descend (one of those pretenders being another Mario series (the 3D ones)), never being able to hold on to the spot, it's amazing to see the king finally return and take back his rightful place. No other game is going to stand the test of time more than NSMBW will (except for its own sequels), thus it is the best game of the year and likely the decade (although a great argument could be made for Bejeweled for decade). Long Live The King!
I support this choice. I'd be fine with Uncharted 2 winning as well, but NSMBW was just the right amount of fun, charm, and nostalgia that I loved every second of the 17 hours it took me to beat it.
That last stage... what a bastardly awesome stage.
I got this game as a gift from my bf and I am LOVING it!!!! The levels are a blast, the small nostalgic details are a great touch, it reminds me the 1st time I played Mario 3 with my cousin back in 1989 and that whole 4 players at the same time is just AWESOME!!! That is Multiplayer not that online thing, being able to laugh and have a good time with your friends or family. Would really love this game to win other than the Captain Obvious choice of Uncharted 2
Maybe it's the same game (though, if you've played it, it feels way different than any of the original games), but it's such a kick-ass game. There is little else that comes as close to pure, distilled enjoyment: no boring fetch quests, endless grinding, or "look at our 30 hour game" which involves 25 hours of driving around an open world, 2 hours of cutscenes and 3 hours of actually playing a game.

"Really? A remake of a really old game that offers nothing new even though there are countless iterations of it?"
How is the world can anyone think that its just a remake? Its a new game with all new levels, so that's a sequel not a remake in most peoples logical minds. That's like saying Halo 3 is a remake of Halo 2, which is a remake of the original Halo. So no its not a remake, its a freaking sequel to NSMB on the DS!
if game of the year is based on fun and fun alone this game should win hands down. it's fun playing with my wife, alone, or with a three friends. yes, it is more of the same but in a way so is uncharted 2 and left 4 dead 2. they are the skeletons of the games you love PLUS a little extra.
i love that this game was nominated in a time when so many gamers are quick to hate on the wii. thanks guys!
@ PokeyStaples: Not quick to hate...but two years worth of built-up hate.
As for NSMBWii, I think that Zero Punctuation put it best when he said, "New Super Mario Brothers Wii is the prisoner who plasters over his escape attempt and then sticks his head in the toilet."
While I'm not much of a fan of associating awards, much less any particular mantle of "Game of the Year" at this point in my experience with such endeavors, the three you've picked so far are worthy, with this one actually being, of all things, the most daring choice. A 2D sidescroller for game of the year, ey? I approve, and this was probably the most fun I've had playing a game all year, so that goes pretty far in assigning it value.
As for the other two selections? Based on your critera, I would wager that CoD: MW2 is next, and deservedly. In spite of some characteristics that really hurt the game, it was an interesting experience and put together well. That and, oh yeah, it's going to sell a boatload of copies by the end of the year and get a truckload of awards elsewhere, so why not acknowledge its quality? Finally I'd say Batman: Arkham Asylum for #5, an amazing game that can compete with the others.
Long shots? I'd really like to see Demon's Souls or Shadow Complex appear, although the latter seems less likely with NSMBW's presence. Any download-only game in the GotY category would be nice, their quality is improving on par with their popularity. Regardless, good luck with the ever unenviable task of picking a winner, and expect the shitstorm of angry nerd rage that will come with it. I'll read what you write and enjoy it, that much I can guarantee you. ;)
Is anyone saying Dtoid is selling out? I think they're just saying the dancing women make the videos appear incredibly tacky. Like you're watching the MTV music awards or some such thing. Except, dancing has something to do with music at least, to some extent. Games? Not so much.
Anyway, like I said in my previous post, the dancing wouldn't be so bad if it were in the background and not so freakishly long and overdone.
So far of the three nominations, I'm feeling Mario Wii. The other two nominations are great games, but generally just more of the same of the previous installment in their respected IP's.
@runtheplacered
Yeah that post might've been more relevant last time.
I like the dancing. I think it makes the videos fun. I don't see where the tackiness lies. And I don't think it has to have anything to do with video games. Who cares? It's two minutes of entertainment. It gives you the info you need and a lil' extra. I don't see who's bleeding over it.
I really can't believe it's even an issue. It's ridiculous. Are we so trying not to be "them" that we can't just have fun every once in a while?
Even as a well-documented admirer of big titties and cleavage, I find myself curious at how strange and tacky Destructoid seems for shoehorning them into their Game of the Year Nominee videos. I just can't seem to take the feature seriously with these smiles-with-tits dancing about. Did you guys need filler to get over the one-minute mark? You could have just used footage of Jim playing his PSP while taking a shit, and somehow that still would have been a more viable solution than the choreography and the music.
Well, maybe that's just me. Either way, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is, obviously, full of win.
Yes! This game deserves the nomination, if not the DTOID award! And not just because it's another Mario title, rather because it's a solid, outstanding and entertaining platform title that reminds us of why we play video games... To have fun!
What more could you want from a game?
I 'unno... depth, originality, strong story, innovation, emotional experiences that can be applicable to real life, meaningful reoccurring themes, dignity, bearable co-op that doesn't end in violence, intellectual stimulation in general...
All that said though, it's decent, I guess. Seems like you're giving nominations to games that actively avoid breaking any boundaries so far.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Henceforth, this shall not be known as the comments section, but the 'Discussion of whether dancing girls is appropriate/sexy or not Section'.
Please nominate Demon's souls.
Sadly, I hope Jim's dislike of Dragon Age doesn't have that masterpiece stricken from the top 5.
That last stage... what a bastardly awesome stage.
There's plenty of different stuff in this game that wasn't in any of the other Mario games. Have you played this yet?
why aren't video games a respected art?
OMG boobies fapfapfapfap!!!!!
*head asplodes*

Ergh, but these fully clothed women are dancing. SEX! DToid iz s3lling 0ut! Teh secks saelz!
On a serious note I can't say I terribly support this nomination. Just not my style. I loves SMB but not GOTY love. So far I'm feelin' Uncharted 2.
Also, the girl in the middle is insanely attractive. I really like her hair. Just throwin' that out there.

I am glad we have our token-wii title covered.

I'm never washing my eyes again.
I want to buy NSMBW, but I think I'll hold out for it to drop in value on Goozex.
Well, maybe that's just me. Either way, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is, obviously, full of win.
Is it meant to be taken seriously though? And where are the breast? I didn't see any breast or cleavage.

The nominations are going to games that are fun... That's why we play. We play to have fun. Hello.
