As a person with contempt for (or at least a preference against) all gaming that's non-PC, I find the eshop to be just dandy, and this is coming from a person used to the incredibly streamlined process of PC DD purchases.
Linking those accounts isn't akin to having your account stored by Sony/MS. All it does is track what you purchase and, if the game qualifies, allot points to your CN account.
In other words, you're S.O.L. if your 3DS is lost or stolen.
But hey, this is Nintendo. They could airbrush an Atari Jaguar and promise a Mario/Zelda, and people would still gobble it up.
People just keep whining and forget the shit they were whining about months ago, like friend codes for every game.
Scroll left for functional stuff like by title lists, ratings and account info/settings. Scroll Right for showcases. Not hard. Maybe the simple, functional layout escaped you.
In my opinion, the iOS store looks like someone just dropped a bunch of shit (covered in blood and cum) on the floor of steam. I hate the App Store with a passion.
Android's App store is a little bit better.
Compare it with another companies online store, XBox Live Arcade. They are both pretty similar, scrolling lists of software that go from left to right, fitting screenshots to the screen etc.
Significant improvements over XBox live arcade:
1. No US Army, Ford, Gum or Mountain Dew advertisements anywhere.
2. The search function is immediately available
3. Games are presented in interesting collections as well as by release date
4. You must play games for an hour before you can rate them
5. All of the information and screenshots are available on a single page
6. Movies of most titles are available
Missing Features:
1. Background Downloads
2. Demos for every game
I'm pretty happy with it. It's a brand new shop and it looks much better then most did when they first launched. As long as Nintendo is dedicated to improving it, I'm a happy camper.
Also, Jim failed to mention the hundreds of DSi ware games that are collected and showcased right along side the 3DS stuff. Someone who skipped the DSi, or didn't buy everything on the DSi shop, will literally have hundreds of games to poke through. How is that a "Barren Marketplace"?
Since I already know what I'm looking for browsing it is not a big deal
My biggest issue is what Excel said, I hate having to put more money than I need in my account. I don't understand why I can't just buy something straight up. $6 is a really annoying price because it's only $1 more than $5, but I have to buy $10 worth of points to get a $6 game.
*and the WiiU, but that's offtopic...
Of course, my personal opinions don't really jive with Iwata's stated intention of making the eShop a much more enjoyable place to window shop. Whether or not they've succeeded is up to 3DS owners (I don't have one yet).
The iOS market is unregulated and full or piracy. It also has this knack for letting unacceptable content into the marketplace. You know like the "gay conversion" app or that game about illegals crossing the border. Tasteless, tactless shit. And that's before we even get to the mountains of shit shovelware released that tend to obscure the handful of gens that exist.
Nintendo and Sony seem to go by the book and that means old games get released at a snail's pace, but then, there's a lot Sony, Hintendo and third parties have to do to get that game back on the market legally. Its not as simple as slapping together a ROM and selling it.
And let's face it - some third parties either won't bother or are still highly superstitious about digital distribution. It kills me that Atlus Japan has no interest in localizing the classic Shin Megami Tensei games from the Super Famicom, the PSN and Virtual Console markets are no strangers to Japanese imports, but Atlus will not front the cash to do a translation
It doesn't matter to them that fans want it, that there are fan translations the translators would give up for free just so other fans could enjoy the game legitimately. Its just not seen as a worthwhile venture from the perspective of the suits in Atlus Japan.
It does make me wonder what magic Valve performs that Nintendo and Sony somehow count for their services, though. They have to go through all the same hoops but emulation.
So there's a lot going on here. Its just not as simple as putting up the ROM, though it would be nice if it were that simple, but then, when its that simple its piracy.
Certainly frustrating, but it is sort of new and hopefully they'll iron out the UI by Christmas. Ipods weren't always a streamlined piece of user interface either...hell it still pisses me off at times.
"Fucking Donkey Kong for the Game Boy. I grant you, it's a pretty cool game, but a single pretty cool game is nowhere near enough to satisfy my lengthy wait for substantial 3DS content."
While I would have loved more games, Donkey Kong for GB is freaking fantastic and I'm having a blast, I didn't remember it being this good. I'm already playing this more than Dead or Alive.
I was so freaking excited to log on and get a look at what all was on there, and MAN what a disappointment. Nintendo sucks at online. FACT.
Not only is it a poorly constructed system that would have looked outdated in 2003 but it's extra expensive for a gigantic chunk of the world simply "because".
That's not even mentioning how hard it is to find anything. Like Jim said, the only exposure these games get is through arbitrary promotions on the eshop. In addition to a competent search engine, there needs to be an easy way to browse all the games that makes them accessible.
"The thing is, I really don't think they know that. Nintendo is a company run by artists and game developers, not OS or hardware designers. That's where their priorities are -- the games. And that's exactly why you'll end up putting up with the eShop, because you want those games."
This is the excuse that's been used for three platforms now. Where are they? It would be one thing if the UI sucked but the company supported the hell out of the platform. That's just not happening. When the bulk of the quality content on a Nintendo platform comes from gameloft, we have a problem. A big problem. And them being a software company only applies if they weren't utterly ignoring their online platforms.
Hopefully, they will allow a system transfer between the Wii and the Wii U similar in function to the DSi to 3DS transfer.
I was ready to come here and rage about how this is the absolute worst article I've ever had the misfortune to read...well, other than maybe having to read about someone cutting into their own dick and bleeding it into a brick filled with shit. Maybe. And honestly, the opening section pretty much still is. I was ready to call you, Jim, a twat in almost every way imaginable...but then, then...I got to the last part of this article, particularly the last sentence and that was the moment everything came into light. The moment when I realized that you're absolutely right, Jim.
"Why do we let Nintendo make idiots of us all?", is exactly the issue at hand right now, more so than that of the launch of the bjorked eShop (which honestly, I don't mind as much as you do, but that's neither here or there). This article brings up an issue I now see as a more pressing topic. I mean, why do we get excited for a 13 year old game -- albeit, a pretty damn legendary one -- as if it's the savior of this unproven hardware and bombast a company like Sony when they do the same? Why is it that Nintendo can get away with so much shit that no one can ever dream to do and no one rarely calls them on it? It's crazy. And the craziest part is, we're as much crazy as Nintendo often times seem to be.
Maybe it's the Nintendo Fanboy in us all that sorta' let them get a pass because, one way or another, we're all here (On this site, not on Earth) because of them, as indirectly as it maybe seem, but...something has to give. We have to call Nintendo to task for all the crap they pull because in the end, were the ones who end up shutting up, and taking it all in the face and then asking for more.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to play some Donkey Kong '94.
BUT.
"NINTENDO'Z FUCKWADS" and "PIG CUM" and "DICK BLOOD" aren't constructive ways of criticizing the service. Or anything for that matter. I know you "never claim to be a 'games journalist'", but the least you could be is professional.
Let's say Nintendo reads this. Do you think they'd look at this article and say "well, Jim has carefully constructed a list of complaints as to what faults we have with our service. We should take his constructive criticism and use it to better our experience"? Nope. They'll say "this guy is an unprofessional jerk looking to get attention on the internet using profanity. Let's disregard him like the millions of other angry kids on youtube and reddit or whatever."
So clearly this doesn't benefit Nintendo. But how does it benefit the readers? It doesn't, really. It might deter a small handful of people from buying a 3DS or whatever, but that's it.
So I guess I don't get the point to this post. But hey, DICKBLOODPISSANDSHIT, right?
I'm sorry, but Nintendo being a company run by artists and developers is no excuse. In business, if there is some aspect of your industry that you or your current staff is not adept at, then you go out and hire people who are. That isn't just business sense, it's common sense. Evaluate what your competitors are doing and compare it against your own offerings, then go find the people who can help you improve.
It makes no sense whatsoever for Nintendo to ration it like this, as decent first/third party 3DS games are seemingly taking forever to surface.. good eShop content is going to prove vital to sustain interest in the platform until the big hitters arrive, & where is the exclusive/indie stuff.. the eShop is a perfect platform for unique/quirky & original ideas, why on earth Nintendo doesn't seem to be actively pursuing indie devs/games for the eShop is beyond me, they really need to get their collective heads out of their anus, the gaming (especially handheld) landscape has changed significantly in recent times, it isn't a one horse race anymore.
I am by no means a hater, i have owned every single Nintendo platform as far back as the Nes (and currently 3DS) but in my humble opinion, they really do need to to rethink their digital content strategy.. to call it woefull, is a major compliment.. in the ever looming shadow of the (dare i say very attractive price/content..etc) PS Vita, the only significant 'advantage' Nintendo has here is back catalogue, 'reputation' & partners.. why on earth they don't seem to be exploiting it, is beyond me..
For god's sake Nintendo, just give us some unique content already, how long do you expect early adopters to wait..?

Did...did you really just type that? D:
Oh, Jim... Was that really necessary? I don't give a fuck about the eShop. That dickbloody shitbrick is just nasty. :P
PSV with 3G is sounding like my next handheld with some real games and not remakes of 10 year old games. no offense but i'm not very interested in zelda ocarina but was in starfox but thats not coming till late aug.
as for the 3DS shop, why do they hold back on their library? you sell more if people can buy it. every mario game from every system should be on there DAY ONE. hard to port? My ass. I play Duckhunt on my LG G2x on Android and use the touchscreen as a zapper. where's the games Nintendo? Still not too impressed w/the graphics, the psp seemed to have more power; emulators ran ds games on it.
anywho.. yea.. nintendo has yet to grasp the online idea yet (distribution and gaming and social)
*golf clap* Nintendo needs to take a hint a Microsoft and unify their system. Separate point cards for the Wii and 3DS? Fucking hilarious!
Like Pc games even though he has never touched a Real PC (AKA not the walmart specials or MACS he owns) or a PC game in his life and it's obvious in what he says.
You fucking give me lulz jim with your clueless writes though jim.
Also Jim is a nazi Robot so it is part of his programming.

(Again his cluess nature at work Even I owned and still fucking own a couple Sega cd and a few copies of sonic CD.
Keep going JIM the way you act like you know all about video games is getting me through my long days on my coffee breaks with lulz, if I was not playing games I would read what you say more often for the lulz
And the main menu thing has new listings or whatever every week.
I'm still excited too, but not that much hahaha.
Unfortunately, I agree with you. This article might have a lot of truth in it, but the effect is largely ruined when it tries so hard to be entertainment for the lowest common denominator. Maybe it's just me, as I never got the Andrew Dice Clay style of 'shock humor', either. More than that, though, it's just out of place in an article that seems to actually have a point. It boggles the mind that this is a guy who blasted a recent videogame for being offensive. Whatever, though. Moving on.
Oh, and people really need to stop comparing phone games to handheld console games. I swear, if I see somebody mention Angry Birds as a valid excuse for a full-fledged game one more time, I'm going to go postal.
Wasn't that actually supposed to show how horrible conditions are for the illegals when they try to cross the border? Which by the way had to get changed to be less offensive.
I'm really tired of Nintendo in general. I used to love their games, but since the DS and the Wii I haven't really been able to sit there and play one of their games for hours on end. Maybe if they could actually have focus on games and not hardware it wouldn't be so bad. But their constantly adding more ways of controlling games at the expense of fun (in my opinion) seems to just make it more complicated, not less.
