Every day this week, we here at Destructoid are revealing one of the five nominees for Game of the Year 2009, with the winner being announced next Monday (12/21). What game will take the crown this year?
This morningLeft 4 Dead 2 was unveiled as the first nominee for Destructoid Game of the Year 2009. Today it’s time to reveal the second! Since Rey put together a kickass video for each of these nominees -- and there is a description of each choice after the jump -- I am left with the tough job of making these introductory paragraphs interesting enough to keep people reading, but cryptic enough to not reveal too much.
So, with that being said, for today’s post, I am going to play a little round of Internet charades to see if you can guess the 2nd nominee before you hit the jump and watch the video. What? You say charades will never work over the Internet? It sounds like someone has never heard of the asterisk before!
Here we go:
*holds up four fingers* *holds up one finger* *tugs on ear* *points to poster of Martin Scorsese film starring Matt Damon* *holds up four fingers* *sticks out hand in the shape of a gun* *grabs something and mimes running away*
And … scene.
Did you figure out our 2nd nominee? Hit the jump and watch the (amazing) video to see if you are right!
[UPDATE: Okay, I just realized the name of the second nominee is in the video label and in the header pic. Oops. Easiest guessing game EVER!]
Despite being one of the most beautiful, polished games on the PlayStation 3, the original Uncharted (Drake’s Fortune) met with a somewhat polarizing reaction. Almost everyone loved the game’s unparalleled action game presentation, but some were turned off by the repetitive nature of the sometimes tiresome shooting gameplay.
While most of the same gameplay styles are intact, the sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, is such a gigantic improvement on the original game that you almost can’t compare the two. Uncharted 2 again follows hero Nathan Drake as he embarks on a breathtaking quest through numerous, increasingly thrilling set pieces in an effort to discover a mythical fabled treasure. Along the way, Nathan interacts with many characters (both old and new), each featuring some of the best voice acting ever heard in a videogame.
A lot of people are comparing Uncharted 2 to a topnotch action movie, but that is not doing the videogame enough justice. Sure, it could easily pass for one of the best Hollywood has to offer, but it is so much more than that. Uncharted 2 is one of the most exciting, perfectly paced, exhilarating pieces of entertainment produced in the last few years. An action movie only wishes it could be half as great.
From our original review: “It's not hyperbole to say that to date, the single-player campaign mode in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the best, most exciting action/adventure game you'll ever play.”
“If you own a PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves belongs in your collection, no questions asked. If you don't, know this -- there's no other game in its genre that even comes close to it on any other platform. Whether or not that makes Among Thieves the system-seller Sony's been looking for remains to be seen, but it's without a doubt among the best exclusive games found on any console this generation.”
What do you think of our second nominee? Do you like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves? What other three games do you think are going to make up the list of final nominees? And, again, let’s all give Rey a hand for producing these amazing videos.
Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the reveal of the 3rd nominee for Destructoid Game of the Year 2009!
Where/when did R3y make himself a bunch of decently attractive dancer friends? Perks of the business or something? Though before people wonder why they're even in the video I'd like to say that, artistically, I like the way he's doing these, even if some might cry foul as to why there's a bunch of chicks dancing around in some game nomination vids. Can't wait to see the other three!
Great choice! Its hard to argue, I think, that Uncharted 2 didn't achieve what it set out to do as a game.
Whether aiming low is worthy of high praise is a different story, amirite? Straight forward narrative's pretty .... straight forward. Building a complex system that works well and in different ways (Like LFD2 or something), that's a really difficult, I think.
I think the dancing is great. Our production values are amazing on these and it's certainly not what anybody else has been doing for their GOTY nominations.
When I'm not busy working on all things video for Dtoid full time. I direct, edit and shoot music videos and commercials on the side. Here, watch my stuff here.
"I think the dancing is great. Our production values are amazing on these and it's certainly not what anybody else has been doing for their GOTY nominations."
Really Jim??? Are you serious? Did you not watch the Spike awards and their cheesy half-dressed presenter gals?
If y'all want to do your videos this way, that's fine.. but please don't think that having half dressed chicks in anything video game related is at all original. Frankly, I think it's beginning to lose it's coolness factor. Might have been more fun to have some nerdy guys doing some dancing.
Um, not to take anything away from those games, but this isn't just going to be the same 5 as the VGAs list is it? If so you should have a sixth nomination. :)
I just started playing Uncharted 1 (just got a PS3) and I'm definitely enjoying myself so far. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to number 2.
Uncharted 2 is going to be the winner it is a great game but I just love Demon's Souls and I hope it at least gets nominated dancing girls with armor hawtness?
scantily clad women and lady gaga. i love how there has been criticism of appealing to "frat boy" culture - which i took to mean stupid, socially unaware, middle class, predominantly male young adult culture - yet this video does EXACTLY that. i assume there was some debate amongst the destructoid staff about whether or not this was a good idea or not, and i can assure you that its not a good idea. its a moronic idea that is only going to discourage diversity within this community.
if this was a dancing enthusiast website then fine, put scantily clad men or women up and have yourself a good time. but ffs this is video games. do you really have to resort to these low brow tactics to get views or make an appealing video? you guys are better than this.
when i think destructoid i think clever and funny, not askmen.com.
Uncharted 2 is probably one of the best games I have played in all 15 years of gaming. But left for dead 2? Come on barely no innovation at all. I barely even noticed a difference from the first one. (Both good games though) but uncharted pushed all limits and deserves to win.
Not once do I spot one boob in this entire post to guarantee an impression. Also, comparing these to Spike's multimillion dollar Video Game Awards is actually a compliment. Yah know, since I shot these with my eyes close in one night for no money.
I don't get where the complaints for the videos are coming from.
Maybe it's because I'm a college freshmen and I'm not "mature" enough to understand or I'm one of those "damn kids" but the outfits look pretty modest to me and the dancing isn't anything our dance team didn't do in high school and our school is considered one of the classiest in the country.
I mean comparing it to the VGAs seems extreme. Then again I was only mildly offended by that travesty.
By the way, in no way was I dissing the vid, I am loving these things, I just think having Mr D-toid in all of them would make them that much more awesome. =D
You know that one guy in school or at work that you immediately hate for no reason whatsoever? You know it's completely irrational, but it doesn't matter - he's your mortal enemy now.
Game of the year right here!! I love it. To me it is a perfect ten. I'm replaying it again and enjoying it just as much, is just too epic to take everything in the first time.
I don't think you are getting my point. I am not bashing the level of skill or hard work that went into the video and editing it. I am criticizing the concept though, because I just fail to see what it has to do with video games. I don't really see any good that can come of imitating superficial jock culture.
I guess my question is this - do you want to make something where people notice your work for the hard work / good editing / good concept that engages the viewer visually and intellectually, or do you want people to notice it because it has women dancing? If it is the second reason, by all means keep making these types of videos.
