Not really so sure I wanna renew my live suscription now... At least there are still no ads in Netflix...
I think I'm done with Live.. I have a PS3 and a gaming PC, and as someone who loathes the increased reach of advertising, Microsoft had destroyed the value propositon.
Soon - I'm not sure exactly when, but soon - I think I'll just burn all my shit and go and live up a mountain or something. The world just fucking depresses the hell out of me at times.
I really don't think Microsoft are heading in a good direction, so I hope the next generation has a nice alternative console or I'll end up becoming one of those PC gamer douchebags exclusively.
Well, there's always my Wii, 3DS, iPhone and PC to use media apps on. I actually don't mind the ads on the dashboard as they don't really hop in the way of anything, but I don't need them in apps.

Holy shit, really? Xbox live users just got turned into the biggest chumps in online gaming history. You have to pay AND they put more intrusive ads? Have fun with that suckas!
Why is it that a service with a 60$ a year subscription service to even use it, a service already getting more money than it costs just from the games and dlc downloaded through the service, a service that is still rather strict on the amount of patches a game can get, a service that still uses peer to peer to manage online connections in game still needs to add adds, even worse increase the amount of adds while the competing services don't have any of this?
This is why I'm never renewing again. Just getting a new box and transferring my shit to it. I'm sticking to pc and psn for online where I don't have ads shoved down my fucking throat every second. Well on psn at least. Easy to avoid on pc but still there.
Fuck that. I'm thinking about letting my live lapse anyway, I might even sell the dusty piece of Shit.

Whilst Steam and PSN manage to get by without adverts and will possibly be less annoying, if these ads are not too intrusive, I don't really mind. There are bigger headaches to complain about in the gaming world than an advert for ESPN's coverage of something-or-other as you browse the Marketplace or Netflix.

Actually, most of the video streaming apps like Crackle (and even my local VOD service for TV shows) have started to have a lot more ads. I think that stats are proving that people are in fact watching streaming content and advertisers are realizing they have a captive audience because unlike recordings of TV shows, we usually can't fast forward past the ads.
I don't know if MS profits from the in-app advertisements, or whether this is how some of the apps support their own content to keep it free (Crackle is available on iOS devices and the PS3 and it's free... there is no cost for the content - not even paying the Gold fee on Xbox).
Possibly Xbox's monetization is having more people pay for Gold in order to use some of these apps... maybe they do profit directly from the advertising, but either way, adds are coming to streaming content and there is nothing we can do about it.

It's really not that big of a deal. These same "apps" that you can watch on your computer as well also have advertising. I think it would be better for Microsoft if they offered these same services to silver members as well.

I am still amused/annoyed that when you opt to watch a game trailer you are first treated to another unrelated game's trailer before the one you picked plays.

I seem to recall that Crackle had ads in it from day one. Really all these ads they mention are inside the apps so if you don't want to see them don't run the app.
As much as I don't like the advertising increase idea, it's not the end of the world, guys. Yeah, it sucks and Microsoft should try finding a better solution, but at least it isn't a price hike...yet...
All of these streaming services seem to have forgotten that the reason people came to them in the first place was to avoid bullshit like commercials.

We seriously need another Video Game Crash like in the 80s to put these fucking businessmen in their places. Back to basics, please. The people making the games I actually care about aren't worried about TV commercials and online passes, anyway.

I REALLY hope they start forcing us to watch an ad before we can play a game. That would be fantastic. I will pay DOUBLE my yearly Xbox Live subscription for that.
With the ESPN app, if you're watching a live game the screen just goes to a static ESPN logo during commercial breaks, it's not like these ads are cutting into the broadcast. Last.fm has always had ads on Xbox Live after every 5 or 6 songs for non-paying Last.fm members. I've never used Crackle on PC, but on Xbox Live the commercials are about the same as you'd expect from Hulu.
If commercials help bring more free entertainment apps to the Xbox 360 I'm ok with it as long as they're contained and don't get in the way of booting the box and going straight to a game.

Yes, as has been the case since MS lost sight of what the XBOX was meant to be all about, the 360 is offically a media whore of a machine for the Mad Men of this world. Forget gaming, it is all about the income they get from advertising. XBOX 720 or whatever it is going to be called seems less and less a gaming option for the next generation for me. Hopefully Sony don't go down the path further than MS of none gaming applications. Right now PS3 and PC gaming are my main options, 360 is just in line with the Wii to gather dust and become another book stand.
You people let this happen. By willingly paying for a service which should be free (and IS free through other alternatives), you've let them know that you're willing to put up with anything they throw at you. And does that money go into better servers for in game or discounting downloadable games to its consumers? No. It goes into making sure that every commercial for a multiplatform game has the 360 logo at the end of them, or so that they get that shiny new dlc one month before playstation. You let this happen, and it's only going to get worse from here.
