Valkyria Chronicles 2 was incredibly satisfying for this huge fan of the first title, which was a PS3 release. Some wrote off the sequel as it was a PSP-only game, but that didn't stop Sega from bringing the next game in the series back to Sony's portable. I gave the third game in the series a spin here at the 2010 Tokyo Game Show today, and I couldn't be happier with what I saw.
It's like the second game, only better. Thanks, Sega. This is exactly what I was hoping for.
Valkyria Chronicles 3, or as they call it in Japan, Senjou no Valkyria 3, focuses on a Gallian squad called "The Nameless," and is set in 1935, which lines up with the timeframe of the first title. It seems that this troop is made up of the worst the Gallian army has to offer. The demo didn't delve too far into the new story specifics, but it seems that the series is making its way back around to a bit of a more serious tone, much like the first game. Sega does promise a bit of fan service when it's all said and done, as you'll fight together with squad members from previous games.
Those that played either of the first two games will feel right at home here, as Sega didn't mess with the strategy role-playing formula. VC3 still uses the BLiTZ battle system, and the controls and button layout are exactly the same as the Valkyria Chronicles 2. That's not to say that they didn't make a few improvements, though. I noticed some slightly improved menu and interface art in battles. There are also more bold, artistic character portraits, and I noticed that the story elements that unfold on the battlefield feature better headshots and even some comic-style word bubbles. These and other changes, like a in-tank aim view, weren't large additions, but it made an already nice looking game look a tad bit better.

The demo dropped me into a battle with a sightly underpowered crew. We were up against a massive enemy weapon that had two large guns mounted to the side, which was defended by several enemy troop members. I was armed only with a tank and four party members, and it felt like the difficulty level was set to "unforgiving." I had a ranger die on my second command, and another died one turn later. I continued to fall under heavy fire while trying to figure out the best way to take on the armed vehicle. I found out a bit too late that my tank was the best way to take their guns out. I failed my mission, which brought me back to one of the aspects I loved about the first two games: the solid difficulty level. There's nothing worse than a too-easy SRPG.
I'd be game for any type of new Valkyria Chronicles, but Sega is dishing up exactly what I wanted in a sequel. Unlike others, I'm very pleased that the next game in the series is also portable. I also am very excited by the game's return to a darker tone and a more serious story. And while the art was always great, I feel like they've outdone themselves with this third game. The character designs are very nice so far, and I know I've only seen a small fraction of what's sure to be another huge cast.
I'm just going to assume that Sega is smart enough to bring this to the west. For now, Japan will see launch of this game on January 27, 2011.
What I personally want to see is this game's characters doing Gallia's dirty work. I mean killing civilians, sabotaging non combatant facilities, torturing prisoners, and kidnapping/arson/extortion/assasination/etc. The sort of things EVERY military in the world does, but is too ashamed to admit. War is a morally bankrupt act and if VC3 honestly wants to go the darker route, these are the kinds of things I'd like to see.
It still loses serious points with me for being another PSP sequel.
But on topic, hell yes, sounds like everything I wanted. In that gameplay posted earlier it looked like you could get squadmates to follow you? Is that a real thing?
Not so static anymore.
The PS3 would have been better no doubt, but as someone who have put 60 hours into VC2, playing it as a I type, getting new plot developments and character interactions all the time and the gameplay is still awesome.
Gamers today are seriously fucking pampered. You're whining about a seriously high quality game purely because it's not on the console you want, so you go without. Get over it.
Can't wait for VC3.
Yes, I said VC1 in the first comment.
VC1 has better graphics, but the presentation as a whole looks better in VC3.
Jesus, I'm an unlucky fucker.
Best answer ever. Until now I had heard of a gamer who didn't like portable versions of their favorite games.
I'll be buying VC3 if it's released in the West, more specifically Europe. Fantastic series!
Sega is just a mediocre games publisher these days, and they put most of their development money into Platinum Games and Creative Assembly while snubbing their internal devs (Yu Suzuki and Reiko Kodama don't seem to be doing anything these days).
I have no doubt that the VC team want to make a new Valkryia on PS3 but Sega-Sammy would only greenlight such an investment if VC sold in big numbers.
Sega won't invest in games that don't sell, that's why Jet Set Radio, Skies of Arcadia, and Shenmue are permanently dead franchises.
If you are complaining about this being on the PSP, get a fucking job and pay for a PSP. "The PSP doesn't have any good games", That's bullshit and you know it.
Anyone who misses these games are idiots.

Okay, why is this always the argument against the people who are unhappy with the decision? Do you think the people who own PS3's DON'T already own a PSP? The only way you'd end up buying a handheld as unpopular as the PSP is if you're a Sony fan, which by nature, would mean also owning a PS3. It's just if you have the option to choose between the two (like I do), you'd normally perfer the technically superior one. I mean, why settle for a handheld as limited as the PSP when a game could aspire to so much more?
"The only way you'd end up buying a handheld as unpopular as the PSP is if you're a Sony fan, which by nature, would mean also owning a PS3."
The stupid in this quote is astounding.
It sure is a letdown that I would not see the VC3 on the PS3 with the canvas engine. However, VC2 on the PSP outdid VC1 as a whole, especially with the added gameplay mechanics and the immersion experience as Aurien has formerly stated. Gary Wintle is also correct.
Those who refuse to play VC2 simply because it's on PSP (even if they have a PSP) are downright arrogant. Play it and learn to accept what these VC devs been working hard on.
Yet, I can understand those who only have the PS3 and not the PSP. PSP system alone is expensive and really hard to justify if it is only for one game (in spite of all the other blockbuster hit games).
@Gee-Man
PSP is not unpopular. It is simply overlooked upon. A system that is portable in itself is worth looking into for a person on the go or on the cheap. Also think about this. If a (rational) person had a choice to buy a handheld between a 3DS or a PSP, he would go with a PSP cause it can do lots of things that it is intended and not intended to do, and even more so than a 3DS.
Why? Because it does!
Anyway, I've only touched the surface of VC II but even with that being said, I'd still get this game.
"Every time a good game comes out for PSP I bitch and moan because I can't play it because I don't have a PSP and don't want to buy a PSP because it has no good games".
Like Final Fantasy Tactics A2!
@mjemirzian-
How is that irony? Even if you had a point, it wouldn't be ironic. But you don't have a point. He likes the standard difficulty level and finds it to be "solid", and thinks that EX-Hard was too difficult for his tastes. It's not as if there is some kind of hypocrisy at work there. You can't praise a game for having a challenging default difficulty if you don't like playing the game on EX-Hard?
I think when the PSP 2 comes out, I'll buy one and keep my old PSP as my portable emulation hook-up.
That is stupid logic. I don't even own a DS, and if given a choice between the 3DS's superior everything and the PSP (which I own) I'd go with the 3DS any day. Somehow I and many others are somehow irrational and stupid and that the only rational and normal people are the ones who think the PSP is the greatest thing since Kaz Hirai.
