It's back, only now it'll take up less space in your living room -- in Japan today, Capcom has announced Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor for Kinect for Xbox 360.

The title will be a collaboration with Armored Core developer From Software, and will utilize the motion controller. Capcom's Keiji Inafune made the announcement at Microsoft's press conference today, explaining that the game will take place in 2082, despite the game's World War II aesthetic.

We'll have more details, images, and video as we get them.

This could actually be a really killer thing if they can make Kinect adequately replicate the functionality and feel of the original SB controller. I don't know if they'll be able to do that, but good luck to them!

Ok this gets me interested though i would prefer it with the controller because that was the whole point of the first game.

I wonder if they will still make it so that if you die you have to start all over anyway yaay for the most hardcore mech sim return!

....So it's Steel Battalion without the thing that made Steel Battalion cool, and motion control instead?

They basically went from the coolest controller ever, to the worst, why would anyone want that.

Great now I have to get Kinect. My only hope is that this games sucks so I can save myself 150 bucks because if this is good and I can play Steel Batallion it's gonna be a day one buy.

Can the Kinect controller offer enough unique inputs to be in any way analogous to the original Steel Batallion controller? Or is it going to be wiggle this arm to move, wiggle this arm to fire?

Steel Battalion without buttons? This does not compute

Kinect is suddenly interesting again.

Though that really depends on how well (and quickly) it reads any action. I remember the original being hella hard to play, simply because if you died, you had to quickly eject as your mech exploded, which was permanently destroyed. And that was a penalty in an already remarkably difficult game (I don't remember it easing you into the combat very well at all).

If they make it more accessible to play (like how about difficulty settings that make it reasonable) and have the controls actually work, this could really be a thing.

Unfortunately, not a lot of Kinect games have proven to be very responsive in a timely matter. Even the Rare-made games I've played in the Macy's store set-ups would lag behind my movements and required a person in a Microsoft t-shirt to explain to kids how to start it up (by pulling a zipper on the screen).

On the bright side, maybe this would be a game that also works with a controller for the sake of precision and responsiveness in combat. Until now, I couldn't think of a game that would really make a combination of the two interesting or appealing -- the idea of literally ducking behind cover and lobbing grenades sounds unbelievably stupid (in my opinion) given the proclivities and play styles of gamers who play FPS titles.

On the bad side, the orignal Steel Battalion cost ridiculous amounts of money to play, and that doesn't seem to be changing for this one either.

This has got to be one of the more challenging ideas to come across a dev's plate: make a follow-up to a game that required a HUGE and complex additional controller, but make it with NO CONTROLLER.

this doesn't really sound like a great idea, to be honest. I can foresee many a people hitting the self destruct button on accident just trying to shoot other mechs.
That and walking or firing a weapon by pretending to pull levers, and squeezing your fist too shoot... yeah, not getting it. I squeeze my fist enough as it is, and that game is much funner then anything on a console.

Holy shit! I only ever got to play the original game once at a god damn museum (seriously was a history of gamin exhibit). I adored it but physical controller was one of the more awesome things. That said giant mech with minority report style interface for controls? That could rule too. Of course maybe that isn't what they'll do.. we'll see. I can see how this could work at least. First Kinect game to actually be interesting!!!

Just the idea of this has blown my mind. Even if it turns out to be a hot mess, I have to give them credit for shooting for the moon.

We are so close to achieving my dreams when I was 8 years old. That's right, we're that one step closer to Robot Jox in real life.

Well, since the ONLY crowd for the first Steel Battalion was the hardcore crowd that reveled in their excessive buttonry, I can't imagine a WORSE fit for Kinect than a sequel to that game.

Regardless of whether or not it works, the game will be a huge flop because Kinect's audience doesn't overlap Steel Battalion's AT ALL.

"...explaining that the game will take place in 2082, despite the game's World War II aesthetic."

Huh? Are we talking about Ring of Red now?

I thought Steel Battalion VT's were designed more like Battletech's mechs (Western Mecha) rather than 'retro WW2'.

Thins may be true but it strikes me as odd that people complain that all kinect games are casual and then complain when a difficult core game is announced.

That's not a swipe at you dude, just saying is all.

Wow, kudos to MS for partnering with some of the most creative developers Japan has to offer.

I can't wait to see what they've come up with, it really is an all-star cast.

My interest in Kinect has quadrupled based solely on the announcements from TGS.

I still play Steel Battalion....I'll never forget the first time I fired up a VT, put it into to gear, hit the accelarator and strode from from the hanger.

Only to hear a god awful scraping noise as I dragged it across the inside of said hanger, tried to correct and right myself and promptly fell over. Best 'sim' ever.

So this and Dance Central are two cool reasons, for me to want a Kinect. At this rate, I can wait a bit. Nice to see Steel Battalion back again, and if the game still has controller support, I'll indulge in it.

Well, this announcement is both awesome and lame :/ it's great that from software and capcom are making a new steel battalion but also kinda lame that they insist on using the eyetoy2.5 to control it with, damnit I WANT TO PUSH REAL BUTTONS WITH MY FINGERS FFS!!!

I can't imagine how Steel Battalion will work with Kinect. There were a lot of buttons and stuff on the controller, and the only way I feel this would work is if the Kinect control was combined with a 360 controller.

While I have ZERO idea how you'd replace 1,000 buttons and joysticks with ZERO buttons and joysticks... From Software (Armored Core, Frame Gride & Chromehounds) x Capcom (Tech Romancer & Steel Battalion) is the sexiest thing I've ever heard about Kinect! Consider me interested!

It might work if they could drop a view of your hands onto a part of the screen so you could know where to move them to touch the virtual console.
