TGS: Shadow of the Colossus is looking smooth at 30fps photo

Fumito Ueda said today at the Tokyo Game Show in a session that the upcoming HD PS3 versions of Shadow of the Colossus and ICO aren't just lazy ports. They're working on many of the visual aspects of the game to make it look better on your HDTV. For example, texture uprezzing is said to be going smoothly, and Ueda says he's very happy with how it the game is looking so far.

Ueda said that when he looked back at the original version of Shadow of the Colossus, he wasn't happy with the instances where the frame rate dropped. He revealed that with the PS3 versions of both Shadow and ICO they're achieving a solid 30 frames per second, and that he's very happy with the overall experience now.

We were shown a live demo of the first battle in the game, and it looked really nice in HD. I couldn't count frames exactly, but I noticed that the camera seemed to pan smoothly as we watched the player scale the first enemy, and there was even some showing off how smooth the camera moved after the battle was completed. From what I saw, playing this game again in HD will be a real treat.

Thank god on the framerate. I know everyone jizzes their shorts concerning Shadow of the Colossus, but the framerate on the PS2 version really killed the experience for me; I wanted to like it but I was frustrated with the chop. I'm really looking forward to this re-release and giving this game a second chance, as well as the fact that I have never played Ico itself.

Also, Poopface sighting.

A wild poopface appears!

60fps would have been nicer but a solid 30fps that never drops is nice too. I'm curious how the new textures will look. The games were magnificant but they did have the look like they were running on limited hardware at the time.

Ugh; looks like I'll finally have to buy a PS3 then...there're to many good exclusive games to ignore it any longer - though it's still a bit to expensive to warrant an impulse buy...

The framerate was the number-one problem with Shadow of the Colossus. This alone would warrant a rebuy.

ICO was great. SOtC is highly overrated IMO... but maybe I'll try playing it again with a smoother framerate, but smoother framerate or not, I wasn't fond of the overall gameplay. Too monotonous... and the Collosus battles weren't as fun as I was hoping. Grabbing on patches of hair and climbing them seemed like a cool idea, but I thought the end result was unsatisfying and tedious. Regardless, I know what Team ICO is capable of, and I will surely buy The Last Guardian day one! One of the manin reasons I broke down and bought PS3!

OMG, your opinion is the exact opposite of the truth. If you thought Shadow of the Colossus was monotonous, how did you tolerate 5 hours of beating shadows with a stick, then guiding an AI partner that was less intelligent than a goldfish? I can't really bring myself to say a single positive thing about Ico other than a couple of slightly creative platforming sections. I honestly don't see the game's appeal except for the whole "artsy" appeal it has, which I think subconsciously makes a lot of gamers feel justified in their stereotypically uncultured hobby.

When I played SotC I just thought, okay cool game, choppy framerate, low resolution, pop ins, they should have released it on the PS3 the first place and then I put it down. If the technical difficulties wouldn't be so huge I'd be a big fanboy of this game but on a technical standpoint it was too far ahead on the PS2. It completely killed the game for me.

With this re-release I'm really happy and I'm even more happy that Sony and other companies are making a trend for releasing older games in higher quality. It's not just the changed some parameters for the resolution.

Again Sony has my money if they confirm a release in North America. I never played either but I don't really want to buy another PS2 for these.

I thought SOME of the framerate drops actually helped with immersion. Like whenever a colossus foot slams down nearby so powerfully that you're "knocked senseless" and left stumbling for a few seconds.

I...kinda liked the framerate drops. I dunno, it was like a slow motion effect and didn't bother me.

The scenery in Shadow of the Colossus is to die for, not to mention the epic nature of the collosi themselves. It's awesome that they've decided to re-release these titles.

I have two comments that somewhat contradict each other.

1. This is an upgraded PS2 game on the PS3. Why can't they get 60fps?
2. In the original game, the choppy framerate almost added to the experience. It is like it added chaos during intense moments.

I just saw the trailer, and Ico is looking AMAZING. The PS2 version has the muddy look of many early PS2 games, so to see it uprezzed in HD widescreen will be incredible! WANT NOW!!

I'm REALLY looking forward to this. I only got a small go at SOTC first time around. This is a really exciting re-release.

I can see where people are coming from with the low fps, I myself am excited at the prospect, but I always felt like shit was so crazy that it would emulate that blinding feeling you might actually experience during one of these battles.

"Wth is a poopface?"

Only the dormant god of the forums.

I've been on hiatus from the 'Toid for the past several months, but I'll be back shortly. If this new yob offer is a go, I'll be back sooner rather than later. I've been reading the frontpage for a bit and this is one of the first things I've commented on. It excites me.

"1. This is an upgraded PS2 game on the PS3. Why can't they get 60fps? "
It depends. If it were only a matter of upping framerate without upscaling any texture detail or polygon counts (which they are), then it's definitely possible, but with them getting the HD treatment, it probably isn't all that possible. 30 fps is still pretty solid, I think Uncharted 2 hits that constantly...Colossus was pushing a little past the PS2's power itself anyway.

As far as 'framerate drop = immersive slowdown = adds to the experience', I still had them in areas that wouldn't make sense, like climbing on the back of one where he wasn't trying to shake me off (unless you suggest that would also cause slowdown, which pretty much means the whole game should be running slow as shit), and etc. The problem I had was that it got in the way of me controlling the character, leading to frustration, and I was more relieved rather than satisfied after beating the game. If there is still some disorientation after being knocked back or off of one, that's fine, but not when I'm trying to position myself to jump Ninja Gaiden style from one part of the thing to another where precise controls are important.

I've been holding off paying $30 for a PS2 copy of Ico for this. Oh, I have played it-- as great a game as it is, it unfortunately was not worth paying $30. But a definitive version in full HD with retooled graphics and trophies? Sign me up. SotC is worth the price of admission alone. Nuff said.

ICO, SOTC, HD 3DTV PS3! sotc is still to date my favourite game ever as a 3d enthusiast this is going to be the business! i'm really going to be able to peer into the world, the thought of watching that flying sand colossus scene where you first see it but in glorius 3d is making me weak at the knee's if there is one game that would benefit from 3d sotc is it.
