Someone cares about Phantasy Star Online, right? I mean, I am sure it is a good game series. All I know is, when I first read this, my brain transposed the order of the words and I read "Phantasy Star 2 Online." And for a minute I imagined what that would be like. And I was excited at the idea of being Nei and attacking things with my huge claws. And then I remembered I was in a dream world and it was time to come back to reality.
Anyway, Sega has announced Phantasy Star Online 2 during today's Tokyo Game Show festivities. Coming for Windows PC in 2011, there was no announcement for 360 or PS3, but let's hope it comes later down the line. Any dedicated Phantasy Star Online players thrilled to hear about this?
How is this any different from Phantasy Star Universe, really? I have PSO v2 for Dreamcast, and would've loved to have been able to dodge in any direction and have a real story component. Isn't that what Phantasy Star Universe did, improve on PSO's basic mechanics? I could be wrong, I never played Phantasy Star Universe, but have played Portable and currently playing Portable 2.
Dear SEGA: this ship has sailed. Everyone who cares about PSO has either lost faith in the franchise or is playing some iteration of Monster Hunter. Sorry.
Not sure if I care. They just finally got everything right with Phantasy Star Portable 2.
Its Phantasy Star Universe, but it doesn't suck.
Rangers can target and strafe.
Free online play, no fucking stupid Ad Hoc Party.
If they make PSO an actual MMORPG this time, with proper content updates, GM services to match,I may be willing to deal with fees. PSO and PSU's fees were straight-up bullshit, though and as we gave Sega a fair shake on that on DC, GC, PC and Xbox, Sega inevitable proved on each platform that they could not justify the fees.
Blue Burst got halfway there. It had designs that eliminated in-fighting for loot, server-side saves to prevent duping and hacking along with GM support. But even then it didn't have real content updates.
PSO needs a persistent online world. I know some people have a really difficult time understanding the difference, but PSO was a Diablo clone - which is to say a peer-to-peer game with matchmaking server hub and player-hosted games. A symptom of that design is usually client (player) saves can be manipulated and hacked.
An MMORPG has a world beyond the hub, one that doesn't spring into existence when someone decides to host a game, but is actually always there and being affected whether you're online and in it or not. Its a simulated world, real player economy. IN short, more like WoW.
Again, its going to take a lot for me to be interested, they just got PSU right with Phantasy Star Portable 2. Even with that in mind, Sega dropped the ball when the game came out Tuedsay - servers were not up til the next day. Additionally, they announced an expansion
Also doesn't help they announced the JP version's expansion weeks before NA and EU release of the prior version on PSP. Considering Nameo-Bandai is getting God Eater Burst out to NA gamer rather than the standard edition, I have to resort to rolling my eyes and sighing in regards to the plodding oafs in Sega of America's localization department and their archaic turnaround times.
whenever this hits Japan, we won't see it for a year.
If it's actually like the original PSO games, then I'm fucking pumped as hell. Universe was meh, and Phantasy Star Zero wasn't too spectacular. I'm not holding my breath, but here's hoping it'll be good.
Oh hell yeah I loved this game on the Dreamcast that game was epic. Damn I might play it again . On of the few online games that you could play offline. and enjoy it. Yeah this game stole so many hours of my life.
I have 1 Hu cast @ lvl 147 on the gamecube, a lvl 127 hucast on the dreamcast, two lvl 70 somthing rangers and a lvl 50 force on the gamecube, and absoulutly no regrets.
Holy shitballs, didn't realise that server now has Episode 3 support for Gamecube. I have a broadband adaptor right here, may have to re-purchase a GC!

@killias2
True dat. Phantasy Star V, please.
Almost every other comment on this article says you're a liar. :)
Sega, I take back everything bad I ever said about you. Except for Shadow the Hedgehog. You guys seriously screwed the pooch there.

How does that guy still have the blades on the Dashboard in the video? Is there a way to go back to that style?
Give me this NOW.
Side note, was I the only person to like episode 3 on the Gamecube? Loved the card game strategy in it.
please don't be a fluke.
<dust off Dreamcast>
<insert disk: [PSO V 2.0]>
<cummig sequence initiated>
</fun>
Yup!
Right here
Works with V1/2 DC, Gamecube and PC V2 OR Blue Burst. Over 300 people on right this second :)
Holy crap dude, I think I'm going to have to break out my GC now.
