Script-br, Raycon: Never change. If it were necessary in any way, shape or form to earn my respect, you'd have done so today.
Not a personal jab on you Conrad, I'm a gigantic skeptic regardless of the website.
It honestly baffles you even type out some of those sentences, you've seen the general mistreatment of the MM license, right down to Capcom blaming the fans for Legends 3 cancelation, you says that its a traditional MM gameplay while at the same time pointing that its nothing more than a sidescroller with no almost no risk to the user.
Then you have the graphics, I have never seen such low effort sprites in any game, even the original black and white gameboy was capable of better effects than this, this is so bad that you can see that Xover is literally copy and pasted from the IoS X game, right to the sprite in his foot they never fixed.
Megaman is one of the most revered franchises in all of gaming, Capcom wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for them, I don't even play IOS games and I know the phone is capable of much more in regards to visuals, and on top of all of this SHIT, the video for Xover starts with them showing all the classic MM games, sorta like a huge fuck you, its like "REMEMBER ALL THIS AWESOMENESS? WELL HAVE THIS PIECE OF SHIT", also I should point out, that video omits the Megaman from Legends.
Capcoms done nothing but shit all over the character since Inafune left, they finally trot out an MM game its a cheap lazy, looks like it was made in RPG piece of shit with no challenge and copy and pasted sprites from the abysmal IOS port.
That's why people are angry, because the character deserves better than this.
I never said they should be apathetic. I just think that the outcry is of Megaman fans a year plus beyond the cancellation is starting to ring hollow and that maybe they should take inventory of Capcom as a company as a whole when they bitch (and it is bitching at this point) about Megaman. Megaman hasn't been a bread and butter franchise for half a decade now for them.
I'm not apologizing for anything, I can just see how this might be a fun game. It's not the normal Mega Man game and I understand why people would be disappointed, but the cards are (literally) not all on the table yet and I think there could be some cool strategic elements that we've just not seen yet.
And I, too, played DmC this week and think it's shaping up to be pretty cool. Totally over-the-top dialog, as you'd expect from the seris, and some keen stage design. He's not exactly the same Dante, sure, but I think I like this one better.
wrong, that's Chaos Legion for you :P
haven't played a Megaman game since the X6 and Zero series(a little bit)
it's a shame this is how they decided to celebrate the franchise.
ah well that's capcom for you, wish the creator of Megaman and Keiji Inafune worked on nintendo instead of capcom back then. the blue bomber could have a stand with Samus in the Nintendo's Hall of Fame :)
And the biggest thing at least for me, is how Capcom, Ninja Theory and other gaming journalists have been insufferable pricks about the whole thing.
Actually, that's pretty much exactly what you're saying. Right there in the post where you say you're not telling people to be apathetic you suggest the franchise has been crap so long people should not care anymore. That's what apathy is. That is the very essence of apathy, the very definition!
As for DMC, well ask comic book fans how they felt when Batman and Superman's costumes got redesigned in the 90's. Fans don't automatically hate changes to the look of a character, but when you change something that was iconic about the look of a character, you risk putting off fans of that character. the new Dante doesn't look like the same character as the old.
That's my take as someone with no interest in DMC new or old. Well, that's not entirely true, I thought the trailer for the new game looked neat with the changing landscapes.
...I'm not suggesting people should be apathetic, just that they shouldn't have a knee-jerk reaction because the company presents a product which isn't what they expected..."
I can understand that, agree with it even. However, like I said, it's not just about this one game. Even so, given that it's iOS the ceiling for how great it's likely to be is extremely low. Even titles held up as the best mobile gaming has to offer are, generally, just particularly nice looking shovelware. X-Over doesn't even have the "nice looking" part down and the previous Mega Man titles released on mobile have all been pretty horrible.
"I'm not saying we should make excuses for phone games being crappy"
This guy lol.Their are plenty of games that made their way to mobile phones and performed properly, megaman CAN be one of them.Phone games are like sports games that do absolutely nothing and get a free pass as see by this "review"
Me thinking it Megaman hasn't been that great for a while was more my opinion, but I would speculate that if you you catalogued the critical reception and sales of the series over that period it would validate my opinion.
And I wouldn't want people to not be passionate about something, just take step back and a dispassionate reflection when you are calling for boycotts and financial ruin of a company that employs alot of people.
I think you're overestimating the power of fans whinging on the internet. If Capcom experiences financial ruin it will be because they fail to make games that sell, not because Mega Man fans feel slighted.
Its not that I expect financial ruin from it, I don't think that Capcom took a financial risk in cancelling MML3. I just wish fans were a bit more thoughtful and a bit more realistic and grounded. But thats probably not realistic is it...
I'm pretty sure Capcom would have continued with games like Mega Man Legends 3 if it was even remotely intelligent.
As someone who has financially supported the Mega Man franchise whenever possible (bought every single game for the past 6 years minus Mega Man Powered Up) I find it annoying that people are raising a fuss when they very likely have not put in as much effort, yet feel more entitled to be upset.
As far as I'm concerned the last great gift Mega Man gave me was the Mega Man Zero Collection, which was a hell of a great nostalgia trip. The last great gift Keiji Inafune gave me was Dead Rising 2, which was one of the most refreshing games I played in years. The last great gift Capcom as a company gave me was Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Likewise, great stuff.
How many people complaining here bought anything other than Mega Man 9, yet want to talk about how they deserve Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe and Capcom will make money if they follow through?
"Yeah, the game runs for you. So what? For some players, this can be a more challenging experience because you are more limited in your options for avoidance."
No, it just makes the game more limiting in being able to DO stuff. Which works if the gameplay is fast enough, like in "Robot Unicorn Attack", NOT when you're moving about as fast as, well, Mega Man without the ability to slide, dash, etc.
"And yes, I do believe that the card collecting mechanics will deepen the experience compared to what was shown."
I don't mean to sound like an ass, but I don't think you're "casually optimistic" so much as naive. >.> Consider this: we've gotten an entire trailer for the game. In that whole trailer, we got 4 seconds of game play. Maybe one of those seconds was dedicated to the card section.
"How do the cards deepen the experience?"
"I don't know, but I bet it does!"
"Well, what did the trailer tell you about the cards?"
"Nothing, but I'm sure it will deepen the experience!"
"Well, did we get to see what the cards did to enhance the gameplay?"
"No, but I'm sure it will!"
I thought it was interesting that you should bring up how the mobile platform is not conducive to traditional gameplay. Moreover how this game is a "representation of traditional Mega Man gameplay".
First off; the platform is more than accepting of traditional gameplay. If all you play is Angry Birds or other such on-rails one touch control games, then yes your view might be a tad skewed in what is capable. You can successfully emulate any Megaman title from the NES, SNES, or PS1 on any modern mobile with on-screen buttons with no issue. Sure, your fingers get a little in the way, but it works if your hands aren't made of ham.
Secondly, this game is as much a representation of Megaman gameplay as taking a blurry still of a hour long movie is a representation of it. Of the two games to feature something close to turn-based combat, Command Mission went a far more traditional route and Battle Network went down a more experimental route, neither were as watered down as X-Over is and there is no excuse for that.
And since this game is free, I'm sure people who weren't planning on checking it out will do so just to see what the fuss is about.
Oh, and THREE cancelled games, guys. Not two. Rockman Online was silently cancelled recently, a game that even Conrad had expressed great enthusiasm for.
I'm not suggesting that the potential is great, and I'll thank you not to put words in my mouth by suggesting that I'm "sure it will" be better down the road. But what I am certain of is that we haven't gotten the whole story yet and hating the game on the basis of what we've seen thus far strikes me as rather premature.
I don't fault Mega Man fans for feeling like they're owed something, considering how Legends 3 was promoted and developed up to a point. I definitely think Capcom owes something to those fans who not only were led to believe that the Prototype would be the test that determined if Legends 3 were greenlit or not, but also the ones that did invest in the Devroom and believed in what Capcom was doing with it. I mean those who spents hours, week after week, submitting designs, voting on them, and generally keeping up with and participating in the Devroom. To say they're disappointed is an understatement.
This has nothing to do with Xover, though. Xover is just a disappointment to most fans, who are admittedly jumping the gun.
Not just that, but many people will don't waste their time to buy a iOS just to play such an amateurish game like that.
25 years of franchine is not something to be celebrated with a amateurish game which not everyone will be able to play.
And the wrost is the fact Over 1 design and other of his series are just based in a crappy unused artwork for X.
Is a Crossover game, but it's not epic.
You cannot play as other characters from the franchine, you cannot change your Rockman and test him in several stages to see how he'll behave and how he'll fight bosses.
You can customise your Rockman, but even so, it's not really appealing. It's just a new character which doesn't make justice for series logo and neither it's 25 years.
Instead of making which can be really worth and avaiable for everyone, they make a game for iOS with amateurish designs with a new character who is MASS PRODUCED and neither have actual charisma, perhaps neither personality as the previous Rockman main characters.
Considering what Capcom done to the series and making a game which not everyone can play, I suppose we still have a reason to be angry.
