1. There's an offline mode, so even after servers are permanently shut down, I can still play
2. Saved games are stored locally, not on a server
3. It's free to play, at least in the hopeful offline mode
SEGA, you do these three things and you've got a day-one purchase from me.
If it's like the original I'd buy it for sure. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
i heard this plays more with Phantasy Star Portable games. not sure how those games are familiar with the old games(haven't played it yet)
@pedrovay2003
i agree with you, a offline mode(heck with local co-op would be even better) and offline saves are definitely needed. i doubt this game will last 10-20 years without being replace by Phantasy Star 3 or so.
i don't think it'll be free to play though(read you have to pay some subscription fee) that's why an offline mode would benefit on it ^^
If this is anything like the GameCube game, I'll but at least a couple hundred hours into it just by myself. I'd pick up any collector's edition or whatever the release to support this game if they can guarantee it'll play completely locally in the future. I'd be playing it for years.
The game itself left a bit to be desired.
Anyone can make a grindy game where there's minimal story and the replay value lies in nothing more than more powerful items that don't really help you accomplish anything in the game except for harder difficulties of the same game. Hell, Koreans have been doing that since Ragnarok Online came out nearly a decade ago.
On the other hand, I can't tell you how many times I've replayed and beat the Phantasy Star series RPGs on the Genesis simply because the gameplay is that good and the stories are interesting (except for 3). It's really sad to see the Phantasy Star series devolve into storyless, boring hack n slash games with no real replay value other than grinding and farming.
@Patrick Borrelli I'm with you there. It would be awesome to do that!
I am also saddened they did not let you create your own characters in this demo. Character creation is one of the deepest feature and traditions of the PSO/U series, and PSO2's is beyond your imagination. It's so wide that after your 15 minutes of playtime you still would be stuck deciding on some ridiciously minor detail that you can still alter. It's fantastic.

On development notes, the game is not nearly finished, as a pamphlet they handed out said, aswell. 50% is what development seems to be at.
But a closed Alpha actually already happened, and SEGA announced tons of adjusting they are going to do after receiving player feedback. My hopes are really up high, given they take the time to polish this yet rough gem.

"Mags: Mags are back but they will not be shown in the Alpha test. Details about them are unknown."
Don't expect a non server save. That's what made original PSO so damn easy to hack to hell and back. At least for the online mode. Offline would obviously have it's data saved on the game if it were there.
This is actually the only review that I've seen not impressed by it. So i'm curious to see what the big difference there went. I know a lot of us PSO fans are kinda already skeptical about PSO2 but I personally am willing to put up with it. If it means Sega can erase the garbage that is Phantasy Star Universe.
Only other thing I wish they include or bring back are MAGs and so far we're not getting them...which is pretty sad.
