TGS: My mega frustration with Mega Man Universe photo

As I'm sure some of you may have noticed from what little footage of the game we've been allowed to show, Mega Man Universe pays homage to the classic series while providing updated visuals, with a dash of customization. While I'm fine with the updated visuals, I find myself asking why they feel the need to sacrifice quality of game play in favor of said enhancements.

Sure, one could argue that the demo we played is a work in progress, or that that finished product may be a bit more refined, but it simply doesn't seem promising. Perhaps what worries me most is that I'm not alone in my concerns, as Jonathan and others have shared these sentiments to some extent.

It's not like the previous two entries into the Mega Man series have been terrible -- though, I admit I'm not really sure how well they've performed in terms of actual sales -- and at least the recent PSP remakes managed to preserve the classic gameplay. That said, I find myself increasingly agitated by Capcom's incessant need to reinvent the mega-wheel, and while they've taken it upon themselves to include a few retro-elements, it's simply not enough.

It seems like whenever a game has a huge create a level feature, the in game levels suffer (hell yes I'm also talking about little big planet). It's almost like they premade the level obstacles and platforms, then forced the development team to make a game using those obstacles, instead of letting developers make creative levels from scratch.

"hat said, I find myself increasingly agitated by Capcom's incessant need to reinvent the mega-wheel"

While I can't speak for the quality of this game, I don't understand this comment. They just released 2 of the most retro old school Mega Man games they could possibly make. Do you just think they should never ever try to do anything new with the Mega Man franchise again? Even if the game does end up sucking, I can at least commend them for trying something different.

@llort het

What're you talking about? LBP had some fantastic main stages. And the entire focus of the game was sharing and creating, hell, the story mode revolved around that and ended with "GO SHARE STUFF ONLINE."

Regardless, I'm still optimistic with this. As a Mega Man fan from birth who's stayed loyal throughout X, Zero, Battle Network (which was still awesome), and Star Force (notsomuch), I'll probably pick this up. If it's a $15 downloadable title, what's much to lose?

Only thing I'm concerned about is that they haven't shown A) Bosses and if you can create your own boss/attack patterns, and B) Any sort of tile or enemy from a game OTHER THAN Mega Man 2. Yeah, 2 was great, but why name a game "Universe" and show nothing but MM2 stuff? Really it's just me wanting to put Metal Blades and Jewel Satellite on the same loadout, but still.

@caspulex

I didn't like LBP's main stages, so I guess that just applies to me. I also don't really like sharing or making levels (I have no creativity) so that doesn't leave much for that game to appeal to me

Zeik: The increased resolution, character customization, and stage creation all look good. The new art style does not. The combination of 8-bit sprites, high-res sprites, and models do not. Keep what's good, innovate where you can, and be wary of taking steps backwards.

@llort het - Why would you buy a game based almost entirely around creativity and sharing if you had no interest in that? That's like buying a racing game because you like cars, but have no actual interest in racing games.

I didn't buy it, I just played it for a while at my cousin's house. The time I had with it was fun in co-op, but besides that it just didn't appeal to it. I still get weird looks when I mention I don't like LBP so I had to say I tried it at least once.

I guess I'd say it's mostly the controls. Maybe it gets better when you really get used to it, but I never really felt satisfied. Also like I said, the premade levels didn't seem amazing and weren't really going to be a threat to any mario game. The fan made levels felt better, which is why I brought up how create your own level games suffer from that.

does anyone know how far into production this actually is? Only showing megaman 2 resources might just be a matter of that's the first thing they had functioning well enough to make worth showing, but if that's not the case this game is in for a world of hurt. Being able to create your own stages is going to be fantastic no matter how hard everything flops because having those tools in the hands of the public will allow for a higher level of feedback on the stuff that capcom is working on. It's one thing if you have a company making the games and the consumer just living with it. It's an entire different beast when there is a community w/ a working knowledge of what can make things better. This could spawn so many good megaman games

It seems the same as normal Mega man, just in 2.5D. I don't get it.

If we can't play the Captain N version of Mega Man(or Mega Girl),no buy.

Still,it looks to have a better level editor feature than Excite Bike had so they aren't going too dangerously retro.

It'll all be worthwhile if one can create the likes of Improvised Weaponry Man,Unflattering Stereotype Man, Recycled Design Man, Placeholder Man,Junk Man 2 and his son,Lamont,and Game Man in it.

I hate the art style in this game; it just looks ugly. Hopefully pyrofreak421 is on the right track and they just haven't created all the assets yet.

And geez, people are allowed not to like LBP. I bought it, didn't like it and traded it in (for profit!). The floaty controls ruined it for me.

If the controls are indeed a problem, then it would seem that the developer simply doesn't understand what makes a Megaman game. I find in difficult to understand developers actually choosing to make their games control poorly. I've yet to play more than a few hours of Little Big Planet simply because I thought that moving your character felt like garbage. I guess you could argue physics or realism or whatever, but we're talking about sidescrollers here. If I'm going to want to create and play a potentially limitless game, it needs to feel good.

The highlight of the series was Mega Man 8 and Mega Man & Bass. I don't see why Capcom is so intent on pretending those games don't exist.

I don't see what the big deal is. I mean, if Konami made a Castlevania game with a built-in level editor, then I'd be in Heaven. I don't see why Mega Man fans have a problem with this game.

@personaspace This is a joke right? You're joking. Mega Man 8? ... Mega Man 8, seriously? Quite possibly the worst Mega Man game ever made, over seminal classics like 2 and 3, and the amazing 9?

@Kevinski a level editor should not be the selling point of a game. I want game developers to make interesting and intriguing levels and then give me the option of dicking around if I want. My problem with this game is that its essentially MM9 and 10 but with stupid graphics and gimmicks. Its not new or exciting at all. Capcom, I am disappoint.

@ScurvySee - Why can't a level editor be the selling point of a game? Games aren't made for one and only one type of gamer. Why can't there be games that specifically aim to appeal to gamers who do like to mess around and create stuff?

Too many gamers these days seem to believe every game needs to be made specifically for them, and anything that doesn't appeal to them should have never been created in the first place.

The details about how the decision to go with polygonal graphics has sacrificed Mega Man's necessarily pixel-perfect platforming precision are very strange to me. Can't they just overlay polygonal graphical models on 2D hit boxes like they did for Street Fighter IV, or am I not understanding this at all?

To clarify, I don't understand why you're not feeling it, Tim Sheehy. Float controls? Character model messing up the mix? Slow/fast bullets?

Or maybe I need to watch the other Dtoid content?

Like others said, its just not really clear what you mean.

This is the most frustrating type of preview, as a person that isn't there to experience it themselves. All conclusion, no proof. (mathematical sense of the term) Please show your work. :)

This is how i feel, basically they took classic Mega Man and added a coat of HD paint and customization, honestly i hope the final analysis proves me wrong but i don't see anything worthwhile, at least from what they've show so far.

P.S. Capcom get back to Legends 3 will ya? it's about damn time.
