TGS: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater hitting 3DS in 2011 photo

Konami has officially announced that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater will be arriving on the 3DS some time next year. It won't be an enhanced version of the game with updated visuals, if Konami is to be believed. Instead, the game is said to be a faithful port of the original PS2 game.

I'm strangely okay with that. Snake Eater is one of the best games of the last generation and my personal favorite MGS. A faithful port onto a handheld system is pretty cool, and I think a mixture of old ports and brand new games is going to really help the 3DS get a great, varied library together.

What do you reckon? Are you okay with this, or do you think ports are weak? In any case, I can't wait for 2011!

I personally think "ports are weak." If only because Metal Gear Solid controls awkwardly even with 2 joystiqs, and the 3DS could become justified as the dumping ground for old games just because of the 3D enhancements (much like the wii became a dumping ground for old games that were "enhanced" with waggle.)

I'm ok with this because I didn't wanna spend money on a 3ds right away and didn't wanna buy another version of mgs3.

Cool news, I never had a PS2, so I guess this is my chance to pick it up. I was getting it regardless though, but I wasn't sure if it was a port or a continuation of the Big Boss story until now.

I'm actually kinda disappointed. Yea, the 3DS is getting remakes/ports of Zelda: OOT, Starfox 64 and MGS3 but what else? I love Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Super Street Fighter 4 and Dead or Alive but unless they make some great changes to those games then we aren't really getting anything new with the 3DS except awesome graphics....

Don't get me wrong, I'm one of Nintendo's biggest fans but I think it's a shame we haven't seen anything "new". Maybe it's just me....

A faithful port of Snake Eater? Damn it. I could never play the top down MGS games for some reason.

As cool as this is there's just certain games I'd rather play propped in front of my TV with a controller in hand and munchies.

MGS 3 is one of those games. That said, it's still cool. Just not my bag.

Goddammit, Sterling, now I'll have that song stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

I was planning on getting a 3DS anyways to replace my old original model that's on its last legs now, so this is just icing on the cake.

I'm actually a little bummed out it's just a port. If I'm going to buy it again for the 3DS then I'm expecting to be able to hide behind a wall, and look down a hallway in 3D. I guess I'll pass.

Lucky for me there are still plenty of games I want to play on this baby so I am bummed out no longer.

I'm also a tad bummed. I wanted an all new Metal Gear. Still, MGS3 is my favorite in the series, and there is plenty of time in the 3DS life cycle for a new Metal Gear.

@Mr. Holmes

You're right about that. Plenty of time for a new Metal Gear to appear, but now I can't help but wonder why would they bother with this port?

Ah well......Kojima works in mysterious ways.

I'm cool with it in this case, but would like to see something new in the MGS line and kind of hope that the 3DS library isn't going to be too heavy on remakes.

Kojima works in mysterious ways? You mean they want to make more money without making a new game?

Well at least more people will be able to experience such a great game.
I hope they manage to make a good control scheme.

A concern should be, if it's a faithful port; will they leave it with the top-down view from the original Snake Eater? All the movements and CQC will be there?

Maybe they should do a port of Subsistence, with the 3D camera and online.

Don't worry about the "new" games. A system's launch titles are for developers to get used to the system. Once they get comfortable, new ideas come along.

That's why the DS didn't get good for a year or two.

"It won't be an enhanced version of the game with updated visuals"

Wait! What? How will it not be a enhanced version with updated visuals? I think something must have got lost in translation here. Did we not see this game at E3? It looked absolutely gorgeous and after E3 Kojima himself said in a interview with Famitsu in July, that the character models we're close to what they did in MGS4 on the PS3.

So I'm guess what he means by no enhancements is that there's no extra content like a new level, or stuff like that. But at the same time, he also said that coming off the PSP version, they would add handheld features to the 3DS version that was in MGS:PW. So I don't get it, is he going back on all that now? Seems like a big change in philosophy, in just two months time!

It would be a bit better if it was a port of Subsistance. It had full camera control and was a lot less awkward to play. One of my favorite games to date though

So there is NOT going to be 3d graphics? 3D should be as much a requirement on 3DS as HD is on the xbox 360

Ah, I think something did get lost in translation here. In the JoyStiq article it says "In a surprising move, the game's original title won't be spruced up to match its enhanced visuals and new platform. (We made a page for Metal Gear Solid Double 3 + D: Stereoscopic Synthesis Subsequence and everything!)"

They're talking about the title as in the "name" of the game, not the visuals, or the 3d, or anything like that. So it was basically just a joke about about the name of the game being called Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and not Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater The Naked Sample.

You are not the only, even that some ports or remakes makes me excited because I haven't played it, it worries that there are few original projects confirmed for 3DS. I want something original.

I think this is actually a great idea for the development team. It gives them the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the 3DS development software without having to worry about the game itself. This way, we get a great game, and they get a firm grasp on the 3DS so their next project can be super amazing.

I don't see why everyone's pissed about all the ports, I'll take ports of awesome games (some of which I never got to play) over the crappy half-assed launch titles we usually get.

Is it me, or is the wording in a bunch of these comments implying that MGS3 on the 3DS is a new announcement, and that it WASN'T announced at E3?
