TGS: Hands-on with the technically awesome Okamiden photo

I'm a dick. I've had so many opportunities to play Okamiden this year, but I've yet to get to it. Part of that is because playing a DS game on a big event's show floor is pretty painful. With flashing lights and cosplay and giant screens all around you, it's hard to focus on a little portable game.

TGS offered a different atmosphere. I got to check the game out in Capcom's deluxe hotel space (seen in this video). That helped. Still, I wasn't quick to jump on the game. I thought to myself, "Eh, I should go and play something else. I know Okamiden is going to be good. I know Okami fans are going to buy it, and non-fans won't. What's the point?"

Like I said, I'm a dick. I was totally wrong in de-prioritizing Okamiden. The game is amazing. If things come together, it could well be better than its near-perfect predecessor. Yeah, I'm pumped. Read on to find out why.

I loved Okami on the PS2. I loved it a little bit more on the Wii, just because the pointer controls made me feel more like a doodling douchebag god on my couch. Okamiden takes that feeling even further. Of course, you probably knew that on an intellectual level. It's common sense that using the stylus to draw on the screen is both more accurate and more physically gratifying that the PS2's analog stick or the Wii Remote's IR pointer.

What I didn't guess was just how much better using the stylus would feel. The sound of the stylus scratching and smearing across the screen, the way the black ink trails off your stylus in a spot-on simulation of real ink drawing; it's all very convincing on a visceral level. It's also just faster, which means less time thinking about the fact that you suddenly have to freeze the game world, and more time staying in the moment.

Everything else was solid, just as expected. It feels a little awkward at first to hold the stylus between your fingers on your right hand while pressing buttons with your right thumb, but I got used to it quickly. The combat feels like Okami, despite the fact that I was playing as a puppy instead of a full-grown wolf, and the puzzles and exploration were spot-on as well.

Perhaps most importantly to Okami fans and non-fans alike, the game looks great. Like with most DS titles, video and screenshots don't do the game justice. In motion, and on the native DS screen, the game looks great. I know that technically, the game looks "worse" than its PS2/Wii counterparts, but in practice, the game's visuals had an equally powerful effect on me.

I didn't get far enough into the game to know if its boss battles, story, and puzzles hold up over the long haul, but my brief time with it has shown me that the fundamentals are there. If Capcom can just pull off a near-perfect follow-through, they may have a semi-sequel on their hands that surpasses the original.

Mr. Dent
looks nice. As with most okami fans, I've been a bit scared that this will go down the metroid: other m path. I'm glad to get some reassurance.

Day. One.

I'm so utterly jealous of you right now, Holmes!

Well, at the very least Okamiden looks like a faithful sequel to Okami. I'm so amazed that they were able to transfer the graphics, which are great even by PS2 standards, more or less intact to the DS. I wish I could play this now; why can't Nintendo have downloadable demos for DS like Sony has for PSP?

Isn't it coming out very soon in Japan? WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG TO TRANSLATE IT??!!!

Also, quick question. In the older videos I've seen of Okamiden, it looks like the action is always on the top screen, but when you hit the R button to draw, it slides down to the bottom screen. Did the demo you played have an option to always have the action on the bottom screen? I thought that the transition seemed a little jarring.

At least this didn't turn out like the Wind Waker sequel. Good on ya Capcom.

Holmes you're really hard on yourself, man. Why not give yourself a compliment to balance out all that negativity?

Anyway, this is a day one buy for me. Every new preview and hands-on that I read just bumps up the anticipation even higher.

I'm left-handed, will that have any impact on gameplay? Sometimes DS games will have a lefty-switch option where you use the buttons to move instead of the D-Pad, and that always works for me. Is that the case here? If you didn't check, that's totally fine, just curious.

Ugh, I hate games that expect you to use the buttons and the stylus simultaneously.

And, this may seem biased, but I don't see any way this could possibly surpass the original. Despite the bonus of ACTUALLY drawing your brush strokes, I have NEVER played a 3D Adventure game on the DS that had anywhere near decent controls. The PSP has this problem with only one analog nub, and the DS tries to compensate for their lack of sticks by throwing in simultaneous touch control, which never feels comfortable.

Couple that with the fact that the gorgeous visuals of the original actually enhanced the gameplay (and no, I'm not of the opinion that these graphics are anywhere NEAR as good as the original's and I can't see how anyone could think that they are), and I don't think we could possibly have a better game here.

Don't get me wrong, I WILL play this game, and I will most likely find a way to enjoy it between hand-cramps, but I feel there are already a lot of strikes against this game already.

I'd take an HD re-release version of the original over this one any day of the week.

I'm left-handed, as well, but i'm shameful as a DS player in that I generally set my stylus down on my leg or desk when i'm not using it, but know i'll need it soon. But I loved Okami once my dad and stepmother introduced me to it, and I think they're considering buying a DS just for Okamiden. I'm really psyched, too; every new article I see just adds to it.

@ sewageking

You can download DS game demos to your DS from the Wii's Nintendo Channel.

Just wait until Capcom decides to put it up, it's available for download in Japan already.

I don't consider you a dick. I think that assessment is pretty accurate.
I'm going to buy it day one, I'm going to make my friends play it, and it'll be great. There isn't any news there, which is a good thing.

I was going to get this anyway, but Holmes' comforting reassurance makes this even more of a buy for me.
