TGS: Hands-on with The 3rd Birthday photo

The lovely Aya Brea and the Parasite Eve series are back...in a way. Square Enix's The 3rd Birthday is a bit different from what I expected in a Parasite Eve series game, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a lot to like in the PSP title. Square Enix calls The 3rd Birthday an Action RPG, but I see it more as a smarter, more Japanese third-person shooter.

I'm hoping the Parasite Eve fans haven't left the room after reading that.

I played through a couple of Square Enix's demos on the show floor, but the most notable (and difficult) was one that found Aya in a subway that was infested with large, strange beasts called the Twisted, which are trying to take over New York. I was able to take them out with what seemed to be pretty standard PSP-style third-person shooting controls. Holding the right trigger and pressing a face button fired. The left trigger was a toggle. Pressing it brought up a pop-up menu that showed which face button corresponded to an equipped weapon, allowing for easy switching. Movement was controlled with the analog nub, and the camera moves by pressing the d-pad. Having to take your hand off the analog nub to adjust the camera wasn't ideal, but it's something we've seen plenty of times before on the PSP, and it seemed to work well enough in The 3rd Birthday.

The twist in this game is body jumping. By hitting a button, Aya is able to teleport into the body of another person in the vicinity. This mechanic adds a neat twist to the otherwise pretty standard third person action. I found that I was using it to get out of hairy situations, like being backed into a corner by multiple enemies. I was having a pretty good time darting from body to body until I encountered a very large, insect-like enemy that was able to stun me using a  projectile and then impale me with one of its legs, in a move that was an instant one-hit kill. Unfortunately, I found myself dying multiple times, much to the amusement of onlookers. Even still, while the challenge was steep, I really liked the twist this body jumping brought to the table.

I was really impressed with the visuals in 3rd Birthday. The game graphics are sharp and move smoothly, and the textures are on a level pretty close to that of later PS2 games. While I only saw bits and pieces of the in-engine cutscenes, they were all of a very high level for a PSP game. Even blown up on an external television display, The 3rd Birthday impresses in the looks department.

This was only a brief taste of what 3rd Birthday will be like, but I came away impressed. The controls are tight, the visuals are extremely impressive, and there's plenty of the lovely Aya Brea to see. All good things. We're definitely looking forward to seeing more of this game.

You kinda lost me at the part where you said the camera controls with the dpad....I hope there's an option to switch it to the face buttons (like resitance and syphon filter psp games did and worked quite well)....because using the dpad to switch camera angles makes a game unplayable imo....otherwise, it looks like it could be good.

looks like I'll be bringing out "the claw" - Many hundreds of hours of Monster Hunter have my "the claw" skills tight.

I want this so bad, bad enough that I'm tmepted to buy a PSP just for this. Although the camera does sound bad and I'm not entirely sold on this "body jumping". Can't say I recall Aya being able to do that in PE1 or 2 so I dunno how they'll crowbar that one in.

I'm sure this'll be a great game and I'm so buying it day one, but it kinda makes me sad when I see the RPG aspect getting minimized in the PE series, as well as others. I'm way to happy that it's even being made to complain, though. This series needs to come back in a big way.

Parasite Eve 1 & 2 were amazing. I'm sorry to see the story turn and the battle system reworked. The original battle system would have been perfect for the PSP.

This looks like Peace Walker/Portable Ops. Even the freaking HUD.

If I'm walking with one directional input and moving the camera with the other, though, then that sounds more like Portable Ops than Peace Walker, control-wise. And that makes me a VERY sad panda.

I love how every time there's a new psp review/preview on this site, somebody has to mention that they are going to get a psp for said game, and that previous to this game the psp had no worthwhile software. As far as I'm concerned the PSP has become this generations most hardcore system. I'm looking forward to this one (the game I mean)!

So, this is Mindjack: PE version? i'm disappoint, did Aya have any power at all? a basic Heal at least? i mean, from what you said they described it's a Action RPG so what does it have in RPG elements beyond the body switch mechanic? and i hope it's not just weapon upgrading.

I think this a completely natural evolution of the PE series, if you played the second game. 3rd Birthday's gameplay seems exactly like the last PE, though we haven't seen any spells used yet. I'm very excited about this game, and I even acquired the first two games in antcipation.

@JQM78 Peace Walker has controls similar to Sony Bend's Syphon Filter and Resistance. Monster Hunter Freedom Unite uses the D-Pad to control the camera. I prefer controlling the camera with square, triangle, etc... but you get used to this camera control scheme. I didn't mind it so much when I was playing MHFU.

We need a demo for this to convince me, even as much as I like PE.

Also, I've got to agree with everyone who's reminded of PeaceWalker...

Hmmm. Body Hopping and Third-person shooting. It could be interesting if they don't forget about the RPG part of the game. This should include spells, items, upgrades and characters to interact with. Also hopefully there are many interesting locations to explore. The second one got bogged down with too few areas to explore that were too convoluted in their design.

We'll see.

I doubt any PE fans liked what they did to the story and gameplay. I just hated. that wont make the game sucks, not at all. but its just such a waste of a great series turning into a freak shooter (PE2 kind of was.. but not that much).

may this be a spinoff after all, and PE3 will rise from its ashes.

if anyone recalls, Parasite Eve 1 was a cinematic RPG. an rpg with a real world setting, amazing cutscenes, scenarios and a story based on real biology theories.. bring that up again! not a freaking dumb matrix shooter..

Hmm. I don't mind having to take my thumb off the stick to move the camera if I'm playing something like Harvest Moon, but it annoys me big time in pretty much any other PSP game.

Even still, color me interested. I sort of dug the setting and vibe of the original game, and they can go ahead and change up the gameplay as much as they want as far as I'm concerned, since that was my least favorite part of the first game.

WOW....OK, I get this claw thing now, but when I'm playing a fast paced third person game, it still seems hard, I'm still not sure whether it's worth getting a game that forces you to play like that. Using your index finger to move the camera and your thumb to control the teeny tiny psp analog stick just sounds like hell.
