TGS: Fresh Castlevania: Lords of Shadow screenshots photo

I'll go ahead and be the millionth person to say this: even though I fully intend on buying Castlevania: Lords of Shadow at this point, it's not necessarily what I want from a Castlevania game. Yeah, I'm one of those guys who gets irrationally upset over these silly things.

Anyway, Lords of Shadow has been pulling me back in lately between Mumm-Ra, Wargs, and now what looks to be carpet physics; at least that's what I think is happening in this screenshot. Why else would the carpet be raised up like that? This is the stuff I spend my days thinking about, guys.

look in the back ground i think those are just bumos in the floor with carpet over it.

also i think its funny when people always compare games to god of war.

i like to compare them it Rygar: The Legendary Adventure on ps3. which i fuckin loved. and came out a couple years before GOW.

I don't know why people can't get over the whole god of war thing. Castlevania made the action-adventure genre its bitch back in 1986. If anything GoW owes a lot more to Castlevania.

@Eoyal Swan - To even begin to compare GoW to classic Castlevania is laughable, please go back and play the originals and then play NES Ninja Gaiden, which really does make NES Castlevania its bitch.

The reason people have a problem with it being a God of War clone is at least when its sticking to classic gameplay or doing the "Metroidvania" thing its filling a niche that many games aren't brave enough to fill.

Action games like God of War and Devil May Cry are a dime-a-dozen. Why should Castlevania compete for a slice when it can get the whole pie when Metroid or various retro classics aren't around?

I am totally pumped for this fucking game. I think it is a perfect evolution for the Castlevania series while not veering of too drastically from the original formula. Castlevania has always been pretty campy and now it just throws on extra camp. I see nothing wrong with this.

Also, Kojima is all up in the mix and shit. Does anyone doubt this mans ability to make an utterly enthralling game?

@The Silent Protagonist - I'm not really sure what you're so upset about the original Castlevania predates Ninja Gaiden by two years. I was referring specifically to the concept of the game unique weapons, large boss battles, sweeping soundtrack. All presented in a mature setting. I hold both Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden close to my heart but in my opinion the Belmonts slay the Hayabusas any day of the week.

I see your point about the other stuff but a. we already have a ton of metroidvania games and we'll probably get plenty more in the future. And b. I like GoW type action games its a design that works really well so why not implement it here. The cut scenes look great the action looks great it feels very Castlevania to me so what's the problem?

I'm just curious as to how everyone else would make a 3D Castlevania since the other attempts haven't been so stellar. (I thought LoI was a step in the right direction)

Look, I was one of the most excited people in the world when I saw the early story trailers for this. I even let it slide when some of the combat in the demos looked a little God of War-ish. Then I watched a ten minute playthrough, and it was honestly just God of War reskinned in my opinion. The gameplay was so similar it's ridiculous. I still have hopes that the game will show me something different, but it's been taken off my day one list for sure.

I felt that it was okay that it took some cues from God of War, because more modern Castlevanias took cues from Super Metroid, which was one of the best action games of SotN's time. But it's too much in my opinion. As a big fan of old school gaming (both Castlevania 3 and 4 are in my favourite games of all time, along with the first two Ninja Gaiden games), I think that the Ninja Gaiden comparison can be used to exemplify this. The new Ninja Gaiden series is similar enough to God of War in some respects, and I mean, all 3D action platformers are going to have similarities, but it's still quite different enough to be recognized as not being a clone of GoW or Rygar. It'd be nice if they could have done this with LoS. I hope I hear more reassuring things post release.

@jordan:

I agree, I really want a 2d castlevania. That one they released on xbox live recently really sucked.....Im getting this one too, I hope the "feel" of it is like classic castlevania, with th eitem searching and all, not like a god of war clone, like I keep hearing about......I hope they have a demo for it, I've got it preordered too....amazon's got the $20 credit thing going on for it.

I have the impression that this game might be less GOW-ish than people are expecting it to be. Joystiq did a preview of it after playing for several hours, and they said there was a lot more Metroidvania-type exploration than had been hinted at.

I dont care if its similar to gow. Its about who does it better, not first. Gow3 was shit . by the videos and pics i hv seen, this shit looks dope. When something looks very good, it probably is. Cant wait for this shit.

But for fans of Castlevania who found the story of GOW utter shite, you would think that this game would please us?

Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it useless

I'll put it this way: I won't mind 90-minute cutscenes so long as I get 20+ hours of gameplay.

GOW with Kratos as the main character is dead and gone. GOW itself? Not so sure. Also, I don't have that many hopes for this game, for 2 reasons - I was expecting another 2d Metroidvania with graphics kinda like BlazBlue; and 14-minute cutscenes were a total turn-off. If they make another one closer to SotN and OoE, I'll jump in.
