TGS 2007: Sony confirms PS3 rumble, sidesteps any admission of failure photo

Like your 60 year old father who was raised in a small midwestern town before enlisting in the military, seeing combat in Vietnam, losing a thumb to a mishandled shell casing, and settling down to raise two children with his wife of twenty five years, Sony is completely unable to admit any failure. Call it masculine pride in your father, but as companies have been barred from having male genitalia since the 1987 Houghton-Mifflin rape scandal, there's absolutely no excuse for Sony's behavior.

Kotaku has word that Sony has revealed the upcoming DualShock 3, the amalgamation of their current SIXAXIS controller and rumble technology that was groundbreaking more than a decade ago. Jim brought you the news of people thinking it existed earlier today, but this story would be straight from the horse's $2000 Italian suit. From Kotaku:

Kaz Hirai formerly announced the DualShock 3 during his keynote Thursday morning. There will be no other changes to the outward appearance of the new controller.

The new DualShock 3 is planned to ship in Japan this November, US and Europe in Spring 2008. No price is available today, but the new controller will be on hand, playable in echochrome, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Devil May Cry 4, Toy Home, Metal Gear Online and more. In total, ten titles currently support the DualShock 3.

While eventually coalescing to consumer demands is sort of an admission of failure, I would like Sony to -- just once -- come out and say they made a mistake. At least with me it would go a long way toward redeeming Sony's ridiculous actions in light of their third place position in this generation, and while it wouldn't give their system any kind of financial edge, I'd respect them for it.

Yeah, I think this is both great news and bad. Great because we're getting rumble (and I hear it makes the controller weigh more), but bad because what do I do with my old controller that doesn't have it?

I really wish there was some sort of trade-in program that I could get a new controller with rumble for like 15$. I'd be 90% happy then.

Who cares Destructoid. Why this vicious out for blood reporting. It's really self righteous. What do you expect from a massive corporation. Haz Kirai is not Dr. Phil. The "look at what they did" is really old. Who cares.

I think it's telling that most of the Sony obsessives don't defend Sony, they just attack the Wii and 360 in their arguments. This news isn't about the Wii and 360, they don't need bringing up. This isn't about which console is better, it's about a company fucking up.

And for God's sake, STOP defending Sony so blindly. All we want is for them to say "we fucked up." Show a little humility. It worked for Microsoft. MS gained a lot of respect by extending the warranty and saying it screwed up.

Ever heard of pride before a fall? Sony's pride is its biggest weakness right now, not admitting a simple fault. We'd have nothing to mock if Sony would just say "yeah, we know" but pretending like they're perfect does no good, expect to the people who seem to have sworn some kind of creepy loyalty to the company.

"It worked for Microsoft. MS gained a lot of respect by extending the warranty and saying it screwed up."

They may have gained respect, but I'm not so sure they should have that respect. People are on their 5 and 6th consoles and yet they keep going back. Sure, Live is the shit and there are a lot of games, but damn. MS should have concentrated more on getting their quality up before releasing the 360.

I don't think Sony saying publicly, "We screwed this one up," really adds anything to the table that we all don't already know. They realized they screwed up. This is why they settled with immersion and are releasing the DualShock3. I can't say I'm completely happy since I now have a controller that doesn't have rumble and new games will be supporting a feature my controller wasn't born with.

I will, most likely, be getting a new one. If they offered an exchange + a little I would be more than happy. If not, I'll likely take a little longer getting one, unless I get it from Japan first.

Regardless, I disagree that admitting they screwed up will get them anywhere. Perhaps they really didn't believe that rumble was that important. A lot of people complain that rumble isn't used correctly in most games. Did they make stupid excuses? Yes. But, why should a company apologize? It's not like the controllers don't work at all (see RROD)...

Hopefully, there was something coherent in there somewhere.

Yes MS did, i hardly hear anything about the dreaded 3 red rings of death anymore, reporters got bored and moved on, just the way the press is. If Sony admit they got the whole PS3 blu-ray rumble thing wrong they would earn the respect of the press and they would leave me alone to make it all better.

Haha, I have creepy loyalty to MS? Action Bastard, please check my archives and drop the very, very old "Jim Sterling is a fanboy" gimmick. I've been one of the most vocal attackers of MS's shoddy hardware policies in the past. Nice try, though.

Yes, MS did gain respect. Did it deserve that respect? Maybe not. But the fact is, showing humility and admitting fault is one of the best ways to endear yourself to the public. Acting invincible in the face of mistakes is one of the fastest ways to alienate the public.

That's what I'm saying here.

But then, I don't expect the scary loyalists to listen to any argument with a semblance of reason. It just doesn't work that way.

now that is next gen. sonata looks like crap next to that so far..

and don't even get me started on how evil microsoft is, since the beginning, how they bought out their competitors, hijacked companies, broke laws, unfair business practices. you name it. they are by far the worst in the business. even governments are fining the hell out of them. the u.s. did too, but the bush admin got in and dismissed it.

i hate them, their os is busted, doesn't work right, never friggen has, never will, their console is the same friggen way, faulty hardware. they have no business in the video game market. but they know their evil os days are numbered so they are desperately branching out every where so they dont sick when that windows ship finally hits rock bottom, which i think will happen in the next 10 years..

to be honest, i think people who buy microsoft should also be held accountable for the evils of that company and all the bs they have pulled since the 80s. that company should of been broken up long ago. they are the devil. and yes, i bash microsoft any chance i get.. they are the end of the world to me. they embody everything that is wrong with technology and how monopolistic capitalism has won the world over. they sicken me in every way.

While I agree with a good number of the anti-Sony points here, this whole thing seems a touch overblown. Sorry dvddesign, Sony owes you nothing. I'm not apologizing for Sony on this one, but you are starting to come off like a spoiled brat. If Sony wants to charge 60 for the Dual Shock, that is their right. Doesn't mean you have to buy it.

Microsoft is the borg of the of the micro-computing industry. Anyone who would call me insane for saying what i said, obviously has not read what has happened in the industry since the 80s. the browser thing pissed me off, they don't follow standards, media player, how they put be-os out of business, how they price gouged venders who sold other o/s's. do you want me to post links to all the nefarious things microcrap has done since it's arrival?

Sony is bad, sure. but not the borg. they are a electronics manufacturer from the beginning. so they make sense. microsoft was never a hardware company, so it doesn't. sony has legit competition, they are not a monopoly like microsoft is.

Those are very lovely CG's. They look very similar to the stuff in FFXII. Which also had very lovely CG's. When I see some real in game footage, that's when I get excited.

Fine, hate MS, I don't care. But Sony's not "N-G" with stuff like this, or MGS. It's just not. We've all seen CG before.

Lesser of many evils...

You can't talk about Sony without talking about their attempts at making monopoly. Betamax, MiniDisc, memory stick, UMD. Technologies that are more open seem to do better in the long run. Then again, the point of a corporation is to make money and put your competition out of business. You can't really blame them for trying.

@Jim, I, respectfully, disagree that admitting that putting in rumble in the first place will get Sony anywhere. I think that by putting rumble into the controller they're admitting that they think it's important. Let alone settling for millions with Immersion.

Comparing the hardware failures to the lack of a feature is a bit of a leap in my opinion. I believe that MS should have apologized for their faulty hardware that we hear about on a weekly basis in the clogs or emails. Leaving a feature out that was giving them legal problems was a mistake, but not of the same magnitude as faulty hardware.

I'd appreciate it if I wasn't referred to as a fanboy as well. The only thing that kept me from taking home an Elite from BestBuy was RROD. I got a PS3 instead and I enjoy it. I still wish I had a 360, but I still don't want faulty hardware that might or might not fail on me within 3 years. I don't know about you but I like to keep my consoles for a very long time. I still have my original NES. And, it still works.

Yes, sony has tried to do stupid things, but not even as bad as microsoft. sure. i know sony is no saint. but a lot more deserving of respect than the nefarious microsoft and their idiot leaders!

RROD is why i stayed away too, and why i will never go. because by the time they fix it, i wont care and the ps3 will be dominating the market with tons of games that are not just PC port looking BS.

If you work for that company knowing what they have done through out all these years, you are lame. if you work for them and don't know what they have done all these years, even lamer.. i dont give a flying you know what. still.

Hexfix, we're not talking about Microsoft's computing history and habits. Yes, they are the Borg in that area, but that area is not entirely relevant to the 360, at the moment. I hate MS's grip on the PC world, but I love their Xbox consoles. And just because I, or Jim or anyone else, has a preference for a console, it doesn't make them a fanboy. If Sony does something well, then I will applaud them. They haven't, so I won't.

In that case, Jim, I'll say it: Dualshock 3 is a BAD idea. Actually, no, just rumble in general. I've honestly never liked rumble and it's always annoyed me. I realize I'm alone on that one. I've become more accepting of the feature, though.

poor sony, always content with last place.

except in japan, where people will buy shit wrapped in plastic as long as it has the sony label on it.
