TGS 2007: Sony confirms PS3 rumble, sidesteps any admission of failure photo
     Controversy

Like your 60 year old father who was raised in a small midwestern town before enlisting in the military, seeing combat in Vietnam, losing a thumb to a mishandled shell casing, and settling down to raise two children with his wife of twenty five years, Sony is completely unable to admit any failure. Call it masculine pride in your father, but as companies have been barred from having male genitalia since the 1987 Houghton-Mifflin rape scandal, there's absolutely no excuse for Sony's behavior.

Kotaku has word that Sony has revealed the upcoming DualShock 3, the amalgamation of their current SIXAXIS controller and rumble technology that was groundbreaking more than a decade ago. Jim brought you the news of people thinking it existed earlier today, but this story would be straight from the horse's $2000 Italian suit. From Kotaku:

Kaz Hirai formerly announced the DualShock 3 during his keynote Thursday morning. There will be no other changes to the outward appearance of the new controller.

The new DualShock 3 is planned to ship in Japan this November, US and Europe in Spring 2008. No price is available today, but the new controller will be on hand, playable in echochrome, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Devil May Cry 4, Toy Home, Metal Gear Online and more. In total, ten titles currently support the DualShock 3.

While eventually coalescing to consumer demands is sort of an admission of failure, I would like Sony to -- just once -- come out and say they made a mistake. At least with me it would go a long way toward redeeming Sony's ridiculous actions in light of their third place position in this generation, and while it wouldn't give their system any kind of financial edge, I'd respect them for it.

Now...how about you make an actual new controller?

Aw, BFeld13, you beat me to it. Kotaku = morons.

Well, I’m certainly glad I didn’t blow $50 on a second featherweight SIXAXIS...

I wonder if Sony has officially named them yet. I remember that Jeremy Dunham over at IGN put together a list of 2007 PS3 Predictions in which he saw this coming, and he thought they might call it the “Dual Shake” controller or something. But if Sony has the audacity to charge even a cent more for the new rumble controllers, they can go to hell.

Why are all of you treating this like a bad thing? And why would a company admit they made a mistake? It seems more like a sign of weakness to me. People wouldn't repect that, they'd give them the same amount of shit for being wrong in the first place.

Cool. Now Sony can remove the stupid triggers on the controller for better ones. They're so bad.

They should of just copied the 360 controller all the way. I mean, they stole that guide button from it.

360 controller is the most comfortable controller ever, guys. TRUFAX. Anyone disagree?

Maybe instead of "DualShock 3" they'll call it "SixShock". They can justify it by multiplying 2 ("Dual") by 6 ("Six"). MARKETING GENIUS AT WORK HERE, FOLKS!

I disagree when it comes to using that Godforsaken d-pad.

Fighting games (which is my personal favorite genre for consoles) suck ass to play with the 360 controller. I'm pretty much getting a PS3 for MGS4 and my fighting game fix.

Other than that, tho, the X-box pad is pretty damn comfortable. It was practically made for console FPSing (Although I still prefer mouse and keyboard).

More so in this seventh generation of video games than in any previous generation, the consumer is being perpetually gang-raped and piddled on by the big companies. Anyone notice that? They seem to be feeding us more crap and treating us like the same, all while demanding more from our wallets. I guess that's not a major revelation, but it's really getting ridiculous. Gamers like me - those who are a little strapped for cash - are pretty much screwed, unless we come into large amounts of money.

I genuinely feel bad about giving any of these companies my money. Integrity or games, integrity or games... dammit.

Well, I wouldn't say they made a mistake by not putting rumble in the first place. Their hands were tied because of the lawsuit. No, their only mistake is shamelessly spinning it as "last gen" or as a technical impossibility when just about everyone believe it had more to do with the lawsuit than anything else.

Anyway, good thing I waited (not that I have much choice in the matter; I mean c'mon, $600).
Namelessted's Avatar

@questworld, they did not have their hand tied up in a lawsuit. It was done and overwith and Immersion was willing to let Sony use their technology. Sony just didn't want to pay them because they got the shit sued out of them by Immersion. The only reason rumble was never in the PS3 controller from the very start is because the people at Sony are a bunch of elitist pricks that think they deserve to have everybody buy the shit they make.

Sony new they could have sorted out the mess with Immersion quickly and had it in PS3 for launch. Why didn't they? Plain ol' greed, that's why. They didn't obviously want to submit money to Immersion for every PS3 controller sold. Therefore we suffered in the process.

This makes me more glad, I held off buying PS3 now. And is this new one wireless or not? Please tell me it is.

So Hexfire, you're gonna bet on PS3 against the casuals and hardcore buying Wii owners? You are crazy. Wii has now surpassed 360 which has been out for two years. Wii has passed what GC did in five years sales wise globally. I'm sorry but I don't have your confidence in Sony turning things around. To many fuck ups spoilt their soup ages ago.

I'm not sorry I'm upsetting your applecart, but these questions need to be asked. I don't have a PS3 yet so I'm lucky, but what do those people that have sixaxis do now? Can you answer that, since Sony haven't the balls to tell us.

No, sony gave us blue ray, and i am a fan of blue ray. i wanted an hd system, with hd content in my games, and hd movies. microsoft didn't give us this, and early adopters had to pay 200 more for the blue ray. so what.

in 1 year the consoles will be priced the same, and the 360 will be using LAST GEN DVD. all ready some games are suffering due to the lack of storage. and this is part of the next gen experience..

sony was wise. what everyone fails to understand as that the PS3 is truly the only next gen system because of this. it uses a next gen storage format, with the cell a truly next gen processor that really is beyond the talent of most current gen programmers.

you cannot argue against this. sony wanted to launch the ps3 in late 2008 but their hands were forced early because of the 360 and wii, which to me are last gen console not next gen. using last gen parts.

i dont think any of the games that have come out in the last 2 years on the 360 or wii even come close the the AAA titles on the PS2. So to me, this re vamping of last gen hardware the wii and 360 is a joke, 360s, wow 4 out of 10 break. bah. wii, gimmick games that lack depth. gears of war is a pc game to me. this game is last gen pc spec non sense. whatever.

next year, and the year after, with games like final fantasy, and metal gear, we will finally see true next gen gaming. sony doesn't have a thing to apologize for. the media's short sighted bs, and buying into the diversions of the 360 and wii are bs. seriously those systems are not next gen, its dvd based games, dvd is what the ps2 uses.

@Brain

Everyone else settled their lawsuits with Immersion, WTF was Sony's problem in meeting a deadline. Oh right, they didn't wanna pay. Well, that worked out well for them, didn't it? Settled for what? $109 million or something? Instead of cleaning up their mess early like everyone else, they dump half-assed technology with a statement that the technology in their previous controller was inferior to what they had now. And in addition to that, they also stated that Rumble and the motion controls were not technologically feasible.

???

Yeah...

@hex

Fuck your bullshit about DVD not being HD. I've been playing HD games for years on my PC. They came on CD's back then.

Sony's "wisdom" in forcing a consumer to install 2-4 GB of that content to the internal HDD to buffer playback. Wanna guess what that 2GB of Heavenly Sword might be? My money's on those precious HD textures needed to make the pretties in the game.

I'm sorry you won't get to enjoy any of the fun games on 360. I'm sure everyone here including myself would surely enjoy ripping you a new one in Bomberman, COD4, or Gears.

Show me this "next-gen" game you brag about so much. Everything I've seen on the PS3 looks equal or inferior to the 360. See, I've got all 3 consoles. I don't see the difference. I bought the PSTripahz for BR content, and the occasional game. Why? Because my eyes don't see any damn difference. Why did the precious Heavenly Sword, that's a BR game, clock in at 6-8 hours if the heavy duty BR holds 50GB? You'd think they'd wanna give us some content on there. I'm pretty sure I'd be a bit bored soon enough.

I've seen every title Sony's put out on the PS3 so far. Nothing's hit that high water mark you brag about, with "next gen" Resistance runs at 720p. The story is a different (in location and story) version of what happens in Gears, since both are man vs alien FPS.

Heavenly Sword is an overly long demo.

Ninja Gaiden is an upgraded visual version of a last gen game.

Warhawk is probably the one title I can't rip on much. It's basically Battlefield though, which has been on every console, save Nintendo.

What's your point about next-gen? Storage? Bah. Pointless. Anything they can't fit on a DVD can be put on a 2nd DVD. You're clearly a Sony Fanboi. Remember all those J-RPG's that came on 80 CD's? Like that, but with better visuals.

Graphics? Bah. That's in the eye of the beholder, especially when you can't release a 60fps version of a cross platform game that's better looking on an "inferior" console.

Sound? Maybe so. That Dolby HD does sound pretty sweet.
hexfix93's Avatar
hexfix93 at 09/20/2007 07:38
dude, heavenly sword is a 1st gen game, and even though its 2gb it looks better than anything on the 360. sorry. if that is your argument. i wil lsay it again. the games in 2 years will prove how last gen the 360 is.

call of duty 4? it looks like a PC game. oh wait. it is a friggen pc game.

oh, not to mention its coming to the ps3 too.

and as far as the 60 frames thing, like i stated before, these programmers are using last gen code that wont cut it on the new next gen systems.

like i said, you'll eat your words in 2 years. and yes that is how long it will take. so what.. hd blue rays is better than dvd, cell is better than the wii and 360's processors. the graphics cards are about equal with a slight edge to the 360.

when the ps3 is 349 in 2 years, with al ltheir exclusives, home, and all the same main titles as the 360. no one will care about other machines. sony gives us a little of the wii with sixaxis, free net, hd blue ray. first gen games are gunna blow. ala lair. but heavenly sword is better than any of the 2nd gen games on the 360 as far as graphics and production go.

and if that is only the first gen on the ps3. lol, i feel sorry for the competition. i love heavenly sword so.. that and war hawk are all i need till haze and call of duty 4 come out..

hexfix93's Avatar
hexfix93 at 09/20/2007 08:06
how is it amusing?

the wii is a gimmick toy that is 250, so yeah it sold like hotcakes at first, but even in japan now, its taking a dive in sales.

the ps3 is a true next gen system with next gen hardware, and a next gen price tag. the 360 is like a current gen upgrade, not really next gen. these systems are cheaper because they really are not next gen.

125 million ps2 users still. 10 million wii, 10 million 360, 4.5 million ps3. dont make me laugh, most of those 125 million ps2 owners are waiting for the good stuff to come, and most of them will buy the ps3 by default brand loyalty from loving their ps1 and ps2 systems which sony truly delivered on.

the xbox was garbage, the gamecube has 3 good games and thats it. the playstation 1 and 2 delivered so many AAA titles, and no one will forget this. this is why sony can be arrogant, they know those 125 million ps2 owner will come over once the price drops and the games get better. and i'll say it again, the games on the ps2 still seem to be better than the so called next gen titles.

sony was right a long time ago, the next gen wont start until 2008. that is when they were going to release the ps3 originally. and when you look at sales, they are right, majority of people playing game consoles are still playing their ps2s. not the 360 and wii. the ps2 is still on top.

hand held, its the ds!

jumping for joy over 10 million units sold, is a mistake. gamecube, dreamcast looked great their first 2 years too. then fell off the map. oh wait, didn't the original xbox fail.. it did. sucks so bad no one is even playing the damn thing still. people still play their dreamcasts and ps2s. but not their xboxs.

So, essentially, all you could afford was one system, you bought the Playstation 3, and now you're trying to jutify it to yourself? Fair enough.

I own all three systems. Blu-Ray is quite nice, but otherwise, the Playstation 3 hasn't brought anything else compelling to the table. Warhawk is mastery, but I'm done with Heavenly Sword already.

And you seem to neglect hardware momentum. Betamax was a technically superior format, but VHS won. Apple iPod might not be the most technically superior Mp3 player out there, but it's good enough and has name momentum behind it. Sony lost that to Nintendo this time around. (Not that I play my Wii much either, every couple of months we get *one* game to ride out for awhile) The war between 360 and PS3 is still in contention, and frankly it'll be down to the heavy hitters (Halo, Grand theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Final Fantasy). PS3 has three of those, but will it be enough?

Negative. Most of those are average consumers, who will buy whatever is the reigning console system. That is the Wii, oddly enough. Not my cup of tea, but there it is.

And past the Wii, it's not either of the other two systems. It's the DS.

Oh and dude its a PC game? PC always shows the future as they are upgradable and mostly always more powerful than the console at the time.
Get your head out of the sand and read some article before you shout your mouth off.

Great the pad has got rumble, at long last, now drop the price to £250 and il think about getting one. OR il stick with my 360 which will ahave all the same cross platform games and better 1st party games as MS has infinite cash the but the new xbox which will be suppa dooooopa next gen while PS3 last another 5 years on last GEN hardware!!

So, you're so fucking cutting edge that you're 2 years ahead of everyone else, eh Hex? I'm glad you've got the drop on all this hot new 2 years from now awesomeness coming down the pipeline.

Afrika looks fucking tits.

In the meantime, waiting out that 2 years before we all get pwned over not paying $600 for a PS3.

Wait. You brag about how awesome the PS3 will be when it's $350. Do you own one already? Dude, you're a fucking douche to rally yourself over how cool a system will be when it's CHEAPER when you paid such a high price to get one yourself. I paid $370 for mine.

HA-HA!

So, if it's going to be the biggest thing in the world in 2 years, I guess I'm future proofed. But so far, I haven't seen anything that wows me, out now, or in the pipeline, that makes this console a must own for anyone other than somebody with deep pockets.

Pfft, "next-gen price" **snicker** Where'd you get that one? Elitist prick.

Oh, and if programmers can't handle this next gen code... The games aren't going to be here any sooner. And the code they're working with is the same fucking code it's always been for years. There's no magic box full of unused HD coding they're going to start using when they're ready to learn the PS3's nooks and crannies.

Ya see, making a game isn't some magical spell or some insurmountable beast. Developing a game is done on PC's and Mac computers, some linux as well, They make the art, the level design, the music, all the components that make up your Gears of War, Heavenly Sword, etc. They do all that taking in regards to the limitations or advantages of the console. They then PORT their work over to the particular console they're working on, streamlining for features and "the look" of a console. They know what they have to work with so far as limitations for each platform, and develop to that.

So their "last gen programming" you speak of isn't much more than they still don't know how to optimize code for the PS3. Well, that can be a bear sometimes. Lots of developers STOP messing with shit if they can't figure it out properly. It's a reason why the Saturn failed the way it did. People wanted easier game dev, so SEGA switched to Windows CE loading for their next platform.

STFU and go play your damn Heavenly Sword game again. There's still 16 hours left in the day, you've got time to beat it at least 3 more times. Oh, and QTE's have been around since Dragon's Lair, so the "next gen presentation" of Heavenly Sword's been around for the last 25 years or so.

I say that anyone, I mean ANYONE that bought a console with the Sixaxis controller or any stand alone controllers, we should be rallying for the once a generation Sony Class Action Lawsuit for lying to consumers about their intentions with rumble. My money is on that this new controller is going to run us $60 compared to the current $50 Sixaxis. You know we're gonna pay more for rumble, and it's not fucking fair we get to eat the costs of Sony sitting on their hands over this damn immersion lawsuit.
