I want everyone to note two things about the above video of Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4:
First, around the 00:39 mark the camera is splattered with what looks like Snake's dust-caked blood. While games have had such gimmicks in the past, never before has it looked so seamlessly integrated with the environment. +1 Gold Star
Second, although whoever is playing this sucks harder than whichever one of your female relatives you're most closely emotionally linked to, everything about this video makes me want to capture a friendly djinn so that I could harness his magical powers to ensure that three days from now myself and two other select people have finished copies of the game, delicious sandwiches, and enough free time to play the entirety of Kojma's latest magnum opus from start to finish five or six times over. +1 Gold Star
That, my friends, is two additional gold stars that Konami was lacking before I saw this video. Considering it was roughly a minute long, that's an average Gold Star Acquisition Rate (GSAR) of one every thirty seconds. Based on the average length of previous Metal Gear Solid titles, number four is going to crush our homes and choke our waterways in an unearthly hellstorm of gold stars. You simply cannot argue with the math.
It looks really smooth and detailed. Shame the guy playing has no concept of limiting his exposure to hostile fire. Running out in front of an armored vehicle with a turret? Really? Come on.
Now there's just a $500 purchase sitting between me and playing it. Mutter.
i don't really enjoy MGS gameplay, but you can't argue with the fact that kojima knows that presentation is a big selling point, everything down to the menu's looked tits.
@Mxyzptlk: I think there is a reason for that. I may just be fan boy wishing, but I was thinking that you play through the game in current events, and then it flashes back to the story that builds up to Metal Gear Solid 4.
YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!!! Seriously, who plays a stealth game like that? What has this guy never heard of Metal Gear Solid before? Luuuuk I poosh da ex button and 'e shuuuts!
MGS4 looks cool, but as a Christian Jesus is the #1 Master of the Universe(sorry He-man). He would look way radder in a rocket than Snake in his buttocks tight tights.
The gunplay looks vary unimpressive, like playing a clunky GTA - Vice City with the shoddy AI. It's like they've tried to put more shooter elements on top of the old Metal Gear Solid gameplay. It doesn't seem to work. I mean the enemies just stand in the open. it doesn't have the twitch controls of a shooter - movement and aiming look clunky.
Also, I hate the paused menu to change items/weapons system, it really kills the tension.
I hated it in Metal Gear Solid, in Resident Evil 4, and I think I'll hate it in this game.
They should have stuck with the sneaking element of the previous Metal Gear games with a hit of shooting. They tried to put shooting elements on top of the old style of game play and failed.
At least that's what it looks like right now.
Look thrid-person shooters can work really well - Killswitch, Gears of War - but games like Metal Gear Solid and Splinter Cell are different beasts.
I know that Metal Gear is different from Splinter Cell but both games never had it in them to be a straight shooter.
I mean the shooter elements in the trailer look archaic.
It's like Kojima said "Ok, let's make this game more of a shooter" - bam!!! You can't just copy and paste elements from other games and make it work.
Did you see the other gameplay trailer, showing off the different camera angles available to the player? Not only can the game be played in traditional MGS third person camera angles, but it can also be switched to a Gears of Warish over the shoulder view, as well as a first person view.
And anyway, stealth elements are still fully intact in the game. The player can completely avoid that hectic shooting if he (or she) was good enough.
I've said it before. I respect MGS for what it is, but it's a stealth game. I loose interest.
It looks great, though -- despite the shitty player. To be honest, that'd probably be what I'd look like playing it.
The thing about this is, even though it's a stealth game, there are situations where it looks like you have to shoot a bunch of guys in hectic battles and the controls just fall apart from the looks of this.
I could see how this guy was struggling because he's trying to shoot, but it seems like the game isn't meant for Gears of War type battles.

"Comment zero!" or "FIRST!" Whichever fits.
as far as MGS. I dont care until it's out and im able to purchase it
And what about the blood splatter is different than any other game with that effect?
Now there's just a $500 purchase sitting between me and playing it. Mutter.
I seconds that!
I keed I keed I keed!
I would have rather seen the game played like it was supposed to. Maybe 2 stealth kills rather than rambo god mode.
textures and menus looked nice.
Also, I hate the paused menu to change items/weapons system, it really kills the tension.

Time will tell I guess.
"I hated it in Metal Gear Solid, in Resident Evil 4, and I think I'll hate it in this game. "
Im afraid to ask what games you like, seeing as though you have bashed two of the greatest games made in recent years.
you're drawing an emormous amount of conclusions from one minute of poorly executed demo footage.
I'm drawing no more conclusions than people hyping the game to blue hell based on demo footage.
Hype blinds us, preventing us from drawing neutral conclusions.
