TGS 09: Patching older 360 games to work with Natal not possible photo

Back during E3 when Microsoft introduced Project Natal, one of their tech demos was a version of Burnout Paradise fit to work with the motion detecting hardware. For Tokyo Game Show, Microsoft brought along two other demos for the Japanese market -- the Xbox LIVE Arcade title Space Invaders Extreme and Namco Bandai's Beautiful Katamari.

When I asked Microsoft Games' Kudo Tsunoda if it would be possible to "patch" existing games to work with Natal, his answer was clear -- it's not likely. While Microsoft was able engineer other publisher's titles to work with the hardware, a significant amount of code had to be altered. With that in mind, a simple update wouldn't be enough -- a publisher would likely have to re-release the game in its entirety.

Disappointing news, considering how much easier than using a controller it was to play Beautiful Katamari. We'll have video of that in action, along with more Project Natal impressions and thoughts soon.

Until then, check out out on video trying this thing:

TGS 09: I really want to hate Project Natal
Xbox 360     Many mango seasons ago, a Japanese company promised a revolution to the gaming populous with a tiny white box and its magical motion-sensing controller. The day finally arrived when the heavens o...

Standing up, pointing left or right, just doesn't sound fun. At all.

the question is did you have to pay moon money to unlock any extra levels already in the demo?

kinda sucks that it can't be patched. I'd love to play some of my SRPGs in a Minority Report style.

Dumb dumb dumb. Seriously, I feel like the only person left who doesn't give an f about motion controls. I've yet to play a good motion controlled game - they're all novelties in my book.

And bring 2d back!!

Not trying to argue, I don't even own a 360 and I have a PS3 but how does Sony win this one? Did I miss an announcement that their older content will update for their new project? I'm not really surprised at this as disappointing as it sounds. I mean Nintendo is practically doing the same thing with Wii motion plus. None of their older products are getting a software update to accomodate the 'new' hardware.

Wow... Katamari played better with Natal eh? Maybe I've been underestimating MS's new motion tech.

Sweet deal dude. I'd buy that again for Natal, as long as all the "DLC" that was already on the disc was included without having to pay for it. Fuck that bullshit.

@Draconianviper

Sony have hinted that they'd be able to update old games for waggle. S'pose we won't know until it actually hits if they'll do this.

Personally, I'm not that fussed for motion control, but hey, 50+million Wii fans can't be wrong.....or can they?

Sony's shit is no better. Seriously, the PS3 and 360 don't need this gimmick crap. Both consoles are amazing in their own merit, and they definitely don't need to jump into the casual bandwagon to win some fans over. Shame on you Microsoft & Sony.

I liked the idea of using natal like in minority report, but as for motion control games, unless something completely revolutionary comes along, it's still worth it to use the gamepad.

It was announced at TGS that PAIN, Echochrome, Flower, and other titles will be patched to work with Sony's motion controller. So yeah I guess you missed it.

Eh, it's Natal. I wouldn't use it for older (or newer) games anyway, I don't think.
