At a hands-on event for Dead Rising 2, producer Keiji Inafune (father of Mega Man) had some not-so-nice-words about this year's Tokyo Game Show.

After asking the crowd of attendees what they thought of TGS this year (and urging them to be honest in their responses), Inafune expressed disappointment in this year's show and its games line-up.

"Personally when I looked around [at] all the different games at the TGS floor," Capcom's Ben Judd translated Inafune, "I said 'Man, Japan is over. We're done. Our game industry is finished.'"

However, he then uses Capcom's upcoming titles as an example of "kick ass" games coming from Japan. An interesting remark, as Dead Rising 2 is being handled by Canadian studio Blue Castle Games.

While Inafune's remarks may seem harsh, he's not alone in his feelings -- many we've spoken to have told us they were underwhelmed by this year's shows. It's certainly smaller in size, and many Japanese developers (some due mainly to financial reasons) have chosen not to attend this year's show.

As someone said in another article, TGS looks like it has more fun titles than E3 did, depending on your tastes. I would have loved to go to TGS as well!

Capcom needs to get off this whole Western games are better than Japanese mindset. Sales do not equal quality. In my view, Japan still comes up with the freshest ideas, though I'll admit Canada, mainly Bioware and Ubisoft, have been doing extremely well lately.
Still, though. Japanese games should remain Japanese rather than try to adopt Western ideas and techniques.

Well, how's about that for honesty? He is right, though. Look, I have nothing against Japan or their games, just that most of them look the same (In terms of RPGs). I was scrolling through the week's stories yesterday, and I only saw like, two games that I want (Okamiden & Bayonetta, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, but that's for when I have a Wii). Usually, TGS is something I look forward to and can't wait for, but he's not alone in feeling underwhelmed, as that is how I feel, too.

I agree with Spooky Electric. However I think it is worth noting that although sales do not equal quality, they're still important if a developer wants to stay afloat in the industry.

That was in addition to Lost Planet 2 and Dead Rising 2, of course. Those were default, but I should mention that anyway.

@Spooky. Games are an industry. If creative Japanese games can't sell enough to recoup dev costs, you can't expect publishers to like them much.

@Spooky: I don't know about that. Japanese game developers should definitely branch out and explore new territory. If all they did was develop a game based on what is second hand nature to them over and over again then their games will just become stagnant. Which is exactly what's happening right now to Japanese developers.

I found that both TGS, and PAX just had no flair what-so-ever this year. I'm sure for the people there its a blast, but as a outsider looking in, I just really couldn't care less about either event. Out of all the coverage, or lack there of in some cases, nothing really made me all that excited.

E3 was great this year, I felt genuine excitement surrounding that event from the week before hand, until the week after it was all over. But PAX, and TGS just haven't been the same, as they we're in the past for big gaming news and announcements. Hopefully they'll both be better next year!

I will agree with that, in terms of the announcements. All three keynotes were absolutely mindblowing. When you're actually there, a lot of the cool titles weren't playable though.

Nothing to play at the moment, we have come to the dreaded midlife crisis of this generation. In a year, some really good stuff will start coming to begin the end of this era.

I agree about TGS, but PAX seemed good, even if I didn't get to go (Although you're right about there not being any earth-shattering announcements).

I could name a ton of games that I found interesting at E3, more than I can count on two hands. I can't say the same thing for TGS. I really hope it makes a comeback next year.

Doesn't matter what he thinks about anything to me - my first born son will have the name Keiji somewhere, because I owe him a happy child in this world in return for adding so much happiness to my own childhood.

This is why I bear the oft-mentioned 8-bit Megaman 1up head tattoo.

I believe that western demands are what is fueling the industry, while Japanese design sensibilities are what drive it. Once a balance is struck that meets both the tastes of western gaming sensibilities along with the Japanese design aesthetic, things should hit a new renaissance. HOWEVER, if certain developers and manufacturers keep at their current paths at their current pace, things may turn south quickly for the Japanese market. It seems that Sony keeps telling people what they want and being blatantly wrong about it, and it seems that the Wii may run out of steam without a good, hard shot in the arm to boost its system and software sales. Microsoft seems to be the only company who's making mostly right moves this year, but the hardware failures still haunt them. All the while, Japanese developers are getting nowhere the amount of sales the western developers seem to make mostly because they're not being promoted and marketed extensively in foreign territories like Halo, COD or Guitar Hero, unless it involves ninjas, tits or the combination of the two.

It's a valid concern, no matter how it is stated.

Actually, I agree with him. I thought pretty much every show about video games this year has been boring.

I think it's pompous to say "Oh, it all sucked except for our stuff," but that's what he gets paid for, I suppose.

I thought E3 was good. I think Japanese dev's are getting away from what made them successful in that their games were always innovative. Now it seems like an endless stream of lackluster jrpg's, or at least that's all that's being marketed to the west, with the exception of Capcom, who I think has done a nice job this gen.

It takes releasing games with more attention to actual interactivity than watching long cutscenes, no matter how slick and stylish those cutscenes may be.

This is why Japanese games like Katamari, Dead Rising, Street Fighter and other games that involve continuous action fare rather well in Western markets.

At this particular TGS, no, I was not interested in what was shown. Japanese developers still make fantastic games, though.
I think they need to bring in the much smaller game companies, maybe even make room for doujin developers to breathe in life into the show. Give everyone some showtime. At least that way the hour long lines will simmer down a bit.

I think one problem might be that there are too many conventions. E3, PAX, TGS, GamesCom, several GDCs, etc...

They can't all be good and to spread your stuff out over all of them makes each one feel watered down and underwhelming. Can we just pick one? or at least one per region?

Capcom is definately one of my favorite developers this generation, it's kind of sad to see they've lost a bit of the faith. Their franchises are almost consistently top-knotch games, I mean, look at what they've made in the past 3-4 years. Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Street Fighter IV, Devil May Cry 4, Mega Man 9, Pheonix Wright series, Resident Evil 5. Street/Puzzle Fighter II HD, MvC2, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Monster Hunter, Okami. The only one of their console games I'd dare to consider bad is Bionic Commando, which Grin produced, Capcom just published. The vast majority of the games I listed are Capcom produced, except Backbone rebalancing the re-releases.

How many other companies can provide that level of quality that consistently and quickly? Capcom, you are God tier.

I think the main issue with Japan is that, for the longest time, they've only cared about Japan. One could say the same about the West, except that the West is a collection of countries that includes the US, Canada, England, Germany, France, and Australia. There's no way Japan can compete against that unless they start making games that have global appeal.

I believe that his comments stem from what his cohort Jun Takeuchi recently said about the Japanese game industry ...

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3176056

1UP: What do you see as the best and worst trends currently in the Japanese game industry?

Jun Takeuchi: The worst trend that I see is really the technological inability of Japanese developers to develop games for next generation platforms and games that will be appreciated by users in the West. The technological ability of Japanese developers used to be so much more respected than it is now.

With that in mind, let's quickly look at what *Japanese developers* are doing on the PS3/360:

Bayonetta, Yakuza 4, End of Eternity, Lost Planet 2, Ninety Nine Nights II, Quantum Theory, FF13, GT5, NieR, etc.

Now let's examine the PSP/DS:

MOST EVERY OTHER GAME!

What could be considered at "fault" here that led to the Handheld Invasion? I believe it is two-fold:

Sony. The price of the hardware killed any interest that consumers and developers had for the hardware. Even with the price cuts, many devs were not going to develop for a console that requires a hefty budget. Therefore, consumers went and found entertainment elsewhere, and the developers (for the most part) follow where the consumers go.

Consumers themselves. While everyone is entitled to their own tastes, the inability for many Japanese consumers to broaden their horizons has led to an on-going disinterest in the 360. I am not saying that the 360 is a beacon of light, but it certainly has its fair share of unappreciated variety.

(As an aside, and as a bit of a joke, one could make the argument that it is Capcom's fault for pushing folks toward handhelds by creating the digital crack known as Monster Hunter.

Now everyone wants a piece of that pie - Namco Bandai [co-op Dynasty Warriors something or other, Tales of RM], Konami [MGS: Peace Walker], Sega [Phantasy Star Portable], etc.)

This is not even pointing out the most obvious factor of all -- top-tier titles require a lot of money to make on the PS3/360, and not everyone has access to Capcom-sized coffers of cash.

Well, the Japanese market is beginning to stagnate with no more ideas, hence their death. E3 was okay, but a letdown. For the most part, TGS was filled with foreign game makers and the only Japanese ones were really the RPG's, and those were generic. Angst-filled teenagers saving the world again, really now, where have I seen that before....
