TGS 09: Hands on with Tales of Graces photo

Tales of Graces, one of the two new Tales games, certainly looked crisp and pretty when I walked up to the demo station at TGS this morning, and even though my experience with the Tales series is very limited, I did know that this entry in the series is a much-anticipated one for fans of it. Boasting to the longest title in the series to date with up to 70 hours of story and gameplay, it certainly seemed like something worth checking out.

Hit the jump for more details on Tales of Graces.

As usual, the Tales games have some nice lore if you're into that sort of thing. Asbel Lhant, the main character, is the oldest son of a fuedal lord and dreams of becoming a knight. However, other circumstances lead him down a different path, and he finds himself following in his father's footsteps.

Playing Tales of Graces, for me, was a lot like playing Tales of Vesperia except, well, less pretty since this game is on the Wii. No, I'm not hating, but considering this demo was set up right next to the PS3 Tales of Vesperia demo, you couldn't help but look up and compare the two at one point or another. However, Graces does look nice. The cutscenes are especially notable, with the same colorful style as Vesperia.

In the demo, I ran around the field a bit on my way down a road and encountered a few battles. Each of them taught me something new about the battle system -- in Japanese. However, from previous English info I did already know that this game used the SS-LMBS, or the "Style Shift - Linear Motion Battle System". What it basically allows you to do is set one set of skills to A and one to B and alternate between the two freely. The Chain Capacity Point System used in Tales of Destiny's PS2 remake also comes into play here.

Fighting is very active and seems fun, but it got a tiny bit repetitive by the end of the demo. Of course, I was unable to read the comments and bits of story in between from my party, so I feel that would have made the experience a lot more fun for me. I especially liked the character animations after battles -- they had a lot of personality and seemed well varied. As of TGS  the game is 80 percent complete, due out in Japan later this year. No idea when we can expect a US release date, but we'll keep you posted as soon as we know more.

Alright! Good to hear some news of this.
Still have my fingers crossed that Namco-Bandai brings the PS3 version of Vesperia as well as Graces over here.

Nice to see that a high-quality RPG is going exclusively to Wii. 70 hours? That sounds nice. I'm in need of a good, long solo game, and I like that I won't have to buy a Ps3/360 to get it. In fact, Wii 3rd party support is getting really good lately. Nice that developers are finally taking it seriously.

The great thing about Tales of.. games are the characters - while the storys are often cliche (it's really getting cliche to say an RPG story is cliche now, isn't it?) the characters make the series stand out from every other role playing game out there. ToS rivalled most Final Fantasy games.

@robotbebop - me too.

But I'm seriously considering on buying a Wii now that the total games I want to play on Wii are more than 10 games. I just don't feel like getting a new console since I still didn't even have enough time to finish several games on 360.

The Tales series, while lacking in innovation, deffinitely make up in execution and charisma. Other than Phantasia, that came with a huge game and made me love the series, no other really made me go "oh wow, that's really impressive", but I loved the hell out of Eternia, Destiny and mainly Symphonia. It came crushing on an RPG-less console and made sweet love to GameCubers all over the world.

I'll deffinitely get it, and will probably love it.

I hope it comes to american but Namco Bandai is known for shatterning dreams like Destiny R and Rebirth and pretty much every 2d tales games aside from phantasia gba which sucked in my opinion and eternia.

This looks quite yummy indeed, I love Vesperia so being like that is no problem in my book.

@ yggogre : Tales of the Abyss was far from cliche lol. Probably why it's my favorite game because it was so in depth with the nonsense of the science in that game. Not even doing all the side stories gave you a straight answer to your face -- it was like, you had to put the pieces together to really get what was going on behind the main story line.

Well, I'm gonna follow this story and see if Namco Bandai GOA (Games of America) plans on picking this up.

Just wish they weren't so "picky" on the kind of Tales games they send over to us. So we'd get to see these stories, in their english form.

Man, why the Wii? I would much rather have had it be on 360 or PS3. I'll still buy it of course. But I still haven't beaten Abyss, and have barely even started Symphonia:DotNW. I should get cracking on those so I can get ready for this.

@ SakuChan: I must admit I've never played Abyss - it's difficult being a European Tales fan (we've only had something like four tales of.. games released over here).

@ robotbebop: Same here - I wonder how many "gamers" bought a Wii and then sold it when the games line up started failing.

Do people actually like these games? The original on SFC was pretty cool because it was one of (if not the first) RPG with real-time battles and it had that sweet digitized song at the beginning, but the novelty wore off a decade ago and now they're just boring, tired, and pretty damn terrible. Just give us Tales of Forks already, because this series is well past done.
