Although The Crystal Bearers has had its fair share of development troubles, the game has a firm release date of December 26, just barely qualifying for Jonathan Holmes' most anticipated game of the year. The Crystal Bearers is already making waves with the promise of badass telekinetic combat and a protagonist named Layle, one of the eponymous crystal bearers. As you can tell from the trailer, Layle would rather blow things up than expose his midriff, whine, or lose his memory; instead, he's a mercenary: he kills people for money.
How refreshing.
Anyway, say what you will about Final Fantasy or Crystal Chronicles, but this trailer makes The Crystal Bearers look like the most metal Final Fantasy game since Locke and Co. fought the Ghost Train. I mean, you fight a skeleton riding a flaming motorcycle, for Chrissakes. For everyone that ever wanted Balthier to get his own game, The Crystal Bearers might be for you -- I'm pretty sure that Layle is going to "Phoenix down" Goldenrod (HEYO!) before the end of the game, and he rocks a tuxedo. He might be the best Final Fantasy protagonist since Zidane.

Crystal Chronicles has been my favorite FF series since the GC one came out, so I'm really stoked for this game. It looks like there's going to be SO MUCH TO DO in crystal bearers!
Way to end an otherwise flawless trailer. Other than that, awesome, aswesome, awesome. The Crystal series was always a personal love affair of mine and, although it's seen its share of messy executions and lame single-player gaming, this one seems to be very redeeming.
Port this to PSP now. Pleaaaaase. Cm'on, the visuals don't look that poly intensive. Textures may need to be downscaled a little. A few tweaks to drawing distance maybe but...hell, I just don't wanna have to get a Wii :(
Yeah, If I had a Wii, I'd buy this, the whole trailer screams a fun game. The question I'd like to ask though, is why can't FF games be like this more. Sometimes they get to serious for their own good.
Humour here, reminds me of Lost Odyssey a bit, and works well.
What is with the horrible voice actors spouting irrelevant one-liners that don't have anything to do with anything?
"Insubordination is a great offense."
"I smell treasure here."
"Arrest that woman"
"Run"
"Perfect"
"Only a crystal bearer..."
"Well then. Fun times ahead."
Seriously, what is the point of all this trivial, uninteresting dialogue quoted out of context? They just spliced random shit together, it makes no sense.
This looks like the first Final Fantasy that looks worth my time since since VI
I think Enix finnaly put their mouth where thier wallet is with this wii game.
I just hope it comes out before next year!!!
and hell yeah the thing that makes FF great is that it IS from another culture.
And well the only reason I don't like most of the new ones is that they got TOO relistic and play like any American basic MMO right now.
Yeah like others have said, this might be the first SQUEENIX game I've actually been impressed with by watching one of their trailers in like.... FOREVER.
This actually looks fun and to not be taking itself very seriously at all, even seems to be tongue-in-cheek and making fun of itself. I can't wait for this to come out. It's been a good year for the Wii. Been a lot of consistently solid titles come out throughout the whole year so far.
Is it just me or does this game look like the worst FF game well ever. I've watched a lot of videos of this and read a lot and I just cannot get behind this game at all. I would rather see an VIII remake, CC1 remake, and XIII release more than this. I hope the soundtrack is done by Uetmatsu so I can add some more masterpieces to my collection.
@uswbaz
Ugh. You want another remake?
Hasn't Hollywood's current 60s Horror Movie Recycling Session, or the Star Wars Special Editions, taught you that if the originals are perfect they are always better left as they are, untouched?
The sole argument I can think of is if you cannot play the games on current tech then it's worth remaking the game so new fans get the opportunity to play them. However VIII is coming out on PSN soon, CC1 can still be played on the Wii with Gamecube BC and XIII is on its way, so surely you're amply covered for your tastes?
I don't know if this game will be great but it's too soon to dismiss it as the worst FF game ever... *cough DirgeOfCerberus cough*
I am REALLY hating this new art style they're using for all their Final Fantasy spin-offs. Not every FF game needs to be about a 12 year old, designed in a way that appeals to 8 year olds.
"Prologue" is the name of the track he is humming, and it is rather commonplace throughout the Final Fantasy series. :)
Anyway ...
A couple of noteworthy topics for discussion:
- This is not really an RPG. It may be advertised as one due to the Final Fantasy branding, but this is not in the mold of FFI, FFVI, FFX, or FFXIII. I hereby dub the game an alchemy-adventure game! You mix and match elements and monsters to create new reactions in order to defeat enemies and create loot.
- Will the gameplay feature enough depth to last a whole game? I have seen some rumblings that even though the game makes a fun opening impressions, there may not be much under the hood to keep players entertained for hours on end.
- There are some technical limitations floating around in previews and videos. Camera control issues and framerate dips apparently pop up in places, though I hope that is ironed out for the final version (which should go gold within weeks).
- How awesome is Layle? So awesome. Make an Auron/Balthier/Layle game pls.
@Woland - How many trailers are there out there that make any sense at all? Very few. If all the lines in trailers made sense and were related to each other, they would probably just have to show a full scene from the movie or game. Trailers have had seemingly random lines in them since the beginning of time.

What.. :|
I want this. I WANT THIS NOW.
What ... :|
i'd give the protagonist from chocobo dungeon a better placing than Zidane.
Also, the main character looks like a mix between Haley Joel Osment and Owen Wilson...
See it?
More on-topic, I haven't played a Crystal Chronicles game since the first on Gamecube. Have they gotten better?

Please don't suck.
Also, the voice acting is awesome! What's wrong with you guys??? The english dubs better impress.
And yup, Zidane > other FF protagonists.

Also go go D-toid exclusive!!! Love it!

Also, I think Squeenix has forgotten how to program graphics on systems with limited horsepower. This game looks rancid.

The gameplay reminds me of Phantom Dust and Sin & Punishment.
Overall it seems like a fun little game.
