TGS 09: Epic Games is opening a Tokyo studio photo

Expect better Unreal Engine 3-powered JRPGs in the future. Epic Games is opening a Tokyo-based studio to support developers licensing their tech.

During the “Adapting the Gears of War Franchise for Global Consumption” panel at TGS this year, company president Michael Capps announced the new Japan-based studio and teased that it could be more than a support structure for other studios struggling with their technology. The Tokyo studio may make games.

But we get ahead of ourselves. Capps-san said the Epic is hiring for the new studio, so we’re guessing we won’t see anything in the near future. The prospects of such a thing though, is interesting to say the least.

Can you really be androgynous when all your limbs are thick as tree trunks?

Gears of War actually does mildly well in Asia from what I saw when I was in the region. I guess Unreal team and their engine's sick skills cannot be denied.

This is a very positive move by Epic. Its been pretty clear for a few years, that japanese developers mostly struggle on the graphics side of things. Its all about the more you know, and you can never have enough skills in this industry.

With Epic with a foothold in japan, all japanese developer and publishers stand to benefit, from their engine and their vast 3D knowledge.

And don't worry, the chances of all games ending up looking the same, in brown and grey hues are slim. Its design and art direction that dictates that stuff.

the only problem i have with epic is i think they should publish their own games, fuck midway and microsoft publishing their work, epic has got more than enough money to do it.

@Lydeck

I think it's The Last Remnant, a Square-Enix game made for us Americans who like blood, guts, and convoluted and ugly battle systems.

Smart move. If there's anything the SE RPGs on the 360 have taught everyone it's that they don't know how to use the Unreal Engine very well.

I think Lost Odyssey did a pretty good job on Unreal Engine even though The Last Remnant messed up.
Side scroll Contra game running on Unreal Engine simply need to happen.
