TGS 09: Capcom -

I just have to hope that there's some mistranslation afoot here.

Jun Takeuchi, producer of Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2 just told Kotaku that in his opinion, Resident Evil 4 was "... a great game, (but) its appeal was limited somewhat to maniac players", where "With RE5, I wanted to bring the series to a larger audience. I think its important to do the same for the next RE".

Now I see his point on some level, but I have to say that this way of thinking worries me. The RE series got where it is today by bucking trends. When the first game was released, the idea of a haunted house zombie game was completely untested. That first RE title was made not because it was sure to be a big seller, but because the creators were passionate about the concept. The more the series moves away from that forward thinking, rebellious spirit, the more likely that it'll lose its soul. If the RE games continue to drop the things that make them special in order to appeal to fans of Halo, Gears, or Wii Sports, I'll be a sad panda.

The man goes on to say that no producer for RE6 has been identified, and that no port of RE5 is being planned for the Wii. All bad news, all around.

Or am I being to harsh?

Nah, you're not being harsh. It's Capcom following suit with Inafune's latest "adapt or die" comment.

What the hell can you do? They wanted it to have mass appeal, and they got their wish. RE5 sold like hotcakes, therefore giving them the evidence they needed to justify making the games more and more like shooters and less like a horror game.

I just hope they don't forget that people like single player games too.

No, this wasn't harsh at all. I've noticed that games that attempt to target a demographic usually fail, while those that push the limits are award-winning, best-selling, or both.

And we need more Wii ports, by the way.

Give Sheva both body armors, and SMG/rifle only: I found her formidable enough that she didn't detract from the game throughout :D

Yeah, this worries me a bit, too.
I liked both 4 and 5, but so much of 5 seemed like it was so desperately trying to say 'look! We're not a thoughtfully executed Japanese game, we're a musclebound, testosterone-fueled hunk of western action movie!' that wasn't at all appealing to me. If that's the direction they think is going to get them more mainstream appeal, then yeah, I'm way worried.

They should've stayed with the classic formula...

ZOMBIES + limited ammo + puzzles + no DAMN SHEVA = Good RE title
I'm a hardcore fan of the RE series but I'm seriously disappointed with RE5... 4 years in development and the only new thing they added was coop, which I hated....

I don't think you're being too harsh, but at the same time I don't think there's much hope of that mentality changing, at least with the Resident Evil series. I haven't played RE 5 myself but yeah, I've heard it's not as interesting as previous installments.

But what can you do? You can't expect every single developer who innovates to continue to do so forever. Like in any other industry, game developers are continuously evolving, and while it's sad to see certain developers drop innovation in exchange for larger profits, I think it's more important to look to the future, and to see which of the new guys are willing to bring fresh ideas to the table.

To date, 1.6 million gamecube copies and 2 million ps2 copies have been sold. This is disregarding the wii (million+) and pc sales, so I do not believe it had limited appeal at all. If, IF is sold a half-million copies, was a moderate success*, overall and went on to become a sort of gaming legend like Psychonauts, or yakuza, talked about for years to come and appreciated by us passionate gamers, I would understand.

But, as it stands, selling a huge amount of copies of a game is not limited appeal, because many, [/i]many[/i] people played the game, We do not even know how many copies were brought second hand, so the figure could go up by millions.

But it has sold millions of copies in it's lifetime, even a million on the wii, which we know what type of reputation it has in western society, heck around the world. For a game such as RE4 to sell very well on a console that is deemed to be kiddy and just a child's play thing/toy, is a feat in itself.

Re4 was/is loved by many, many, many people, and the game was probably the biggest driving force for RE5 to sell over 5 million copies, IMHO. RE4 is a legendary game, God knows how many gamers were looking forward to RE5. Saying it had limited appeal is unfounded.

The so-called limited appeal was a big reason why the successor sold so well. Yes, the more western approach did help to sell to the crowd that did not play any previous RE games, but a massive amount of people have, and brought RE5 because of RE4's amazing gameplay.

Oh dammit, I forgot to mention that whilst selling 500,000 copies of a game is nothing to scoff at (the recent Wolfenstien only managed 100,000 in the US, and does not feature on UK or European charts sadly) for a high budget game, like Yakuza and it' reported $21 million budget, even selling half a million copies is a failure, commercially.

I think Takeuchi is wrong. I finished RE4 and quit RE5. That game falls apart without a co-op player. Tacking on an AI partner ruined the game for me.

All this talk makes me worried now that Capcom has had such a successful fighting game revival. With how Ono is always saying most of the company is against him and Street Fighter because it's not mainstream western. I hope they can keep the fightans alive and they don't try to screw with those. Well other than maybe making a few combos a little easier... ahem...

RE4 had limited appeal? I heard almost nothing but good things about that game. Now I haven't hung around the RE fandom much to see what those who were disappointed in RE4 had to say. What I do know is that RE4 shifted from survivor horror to action horror, so I see how those fans could be disappointed in that way. Either way, that still doesn't sound like limited appeal. RE5 shifted even further away by having a partner and being out in board daylight. That’s not to say it’s a bad game, it’s just not the same kind of game.

"If the RE games continue to drop the things that make them special in order to appeal to fans of Halo, Gears, or Wii Sports, I'll be a sad panda."

I wonder how it could be designed to appeal to the Wii Sports fans. Anyone got any ideas?

Nah, RE4 was a great game, I wish RE5 had the same inventory system cause it sucked. It's just that it does need to move forward as a franchise because sticking with the same old gameplay isn't helping. I'm glad they didn't port RE5 to the Wii, just on the graphics alone. Even if everyone screams that it had such a wide appeal, why did it sell only millions in comparison to the tens of millions (at this point hundreds of millions) of consoles? Fuck the wii, the lifespan of the damn thing is going to be short, seeing how sony and microsoft are having their own motion controls they will loose on being exclusive to motion controls at that point (which is their only edge). After all, once they have to upgrade to a new console all those who own a wii will be left in the dust. Which one wins, a Wii port of RE5 or a motion controller ps3 version? (obviously the ps3 version)

I think Mushman nailed it, RE4 is what sold RE5 so much. They did it so well with that game and then everyone expected RE5 to be the next level of that, but it wasn't. I've heard way more mediocre things about RE5 than I have about 4, from what I've played of 5, I still prefer 4.

Are you being too harsh? No. No, you're not. I agree with everything you said and I feel that the reason Resident Evil has appealed to me so much over the years is because it was its own thing. Fuck the haters of the controls or the fixed camera angles - those quirks are some of the reasons I thought Resident Evil was so great.

Resident Evil 5 was the first game in the series that didn't "wow" me and I'm sad because of that. I hope the creators pull the series in a direction that's more similar to the previous games. Resident Evil 1-3 are gaming classics thanks to excellent characters, stories, and unique controls that made the games stand out from the rest. I don't want a Gears of War clone. If I want to play Gears of War I'll pop in the disc.

Harsh? hell no. Everyone knows RE4 was the game that jumped the shark even if it was good. RE5 pretty much shut the nail in it as it's so alienated from past REgames it's really not a RE game at all.

i'm all for a small change in RE games. but if the survival horror bit isn't there, there's no point in smacking the RE label on it.

4 was awesome. I bought the Game Cube version on launch day, and played it a great deal, and enjoyed it each time I played it. The I played the Wii version, and I couldn't believe that they had managed to improve upon what I thought was near-perfection, but they managed to do it. And this is coming from someone who was a fan of the series since its inception.

Too bad they won't port it to the Wii. I had fun playing coop at my friend's house, but RE5 was no where near good enough to buy a PS3 for like RE2 was to get me to buy a PSone back in the day. Honestly, when developers aren't focused on "Shiny graphics." they tend to focus more on gameplay and usually to the game's longterm benefit.

Beh, this TGS has seemed to been underwhelming so far. Only a few games I've been interested in. Most anticipated game of the year is Shattered Memories for the same reason that I loved RE4 so much: It's giving the series a much-needed shot in the arm, and in a way that'll set itself apart from its contemporaries not with flashy graphics, but with its controls and interface. And that's more entertaining to me than HD graphics.

RE 4 is better.

RE 4 Wii Edition is the best RE title.

Maybe if he swapped around RE5 and RE4 there...? =P

4 was the only game I actually played. Sure, it's not a purist's dream (zomg sellouts), but I played the first RE, and it wasn't for me. Change doesn't have to be bad. After all, would Mario be as good if he stayed in 2D all these years?

With some people, sticking to a tired-and-true formula or changing said formula are both bad things to do. >_>;

I have already accepted that the Resident Evil games, in the style that I grew to love, is gone. The more I play RE5, the more I dislike it, and the more it makes me want to replay RE4. As much as I know 4 was not an RE in the traditional sense, I don't hate it like I do 5.

I loved RE4 because it still had a decent balance of horror. The first play through they have those moans and chanting cult members. You walk into a room and you hear "Gogelo, gogelo, gogelo" whispered and you become tense. The play throughs after that were all great fun too because you had maxed out weapons and secret treasure, items and weapons to obtain too. It was like the old Resident Evils in that sense because once you got through the hardship of the first play, you were rewarded with a shift in the gameplay (Like how you got the infinite rocket launcher and the gattling gun).

RE4 had a nice charm to it too; the dialogue was funny at times and I think I can say that the merchant was one of gaming's most popular characters.

I agree that RE5 probably sold a lot on RE4's back. I bought it because of RE4 and got bored of it pretty quickly after completing it. I had a co-op buddy most of the way through too. He even asked me to play through it more times and it just didnt appeal to me. After playing through RE4 about 20 times in total, on the Gamecube and Wii, I was really looking forward to how long RE5 would last me. Boy was I disappointed.

They should just make a new title rather than playing it safe.

How was it's appeal limited? It sold millions, and the whole point of it was to restart the series afresh for new fans to get into. It was critically and commercially a sucess.

Why can a game only be considered a sucess by some if it appeals to EVERYONE? Nothing appeals to everyone, and if anything ever did try to, it would surely be super generic and dull.

I thought RE5 was a good action game, but I was a bit let down because I felt it lost most of what I really like about the RE games that came before; atmosphere, suspense, immersion, etc - all the things that good survival horror has. I still liked it though, it just wasn't exactly what I was expecting from the brand.

Resident evil 5 pales in comparison to Resident evil 4, nuff said.

Also I don't know how you could try to bring a new audience to the franchise when 5 is specifically designed to be the end of the overall story from the previous games (minus 4) that's like trying to get people to become star wars fans just by making them watch return of the Jedi without letting them see the previous installments.

I wish I hadn't bought RE5 just so that I hadn't added to the number so that Capcom could deem RE5 a success. If it didn't have the RE name, it wouldn't have sold like the hotcakes it did.

RE5 collected dust for a couple weeks until I could find a friend to sit down and play it to completion. I then had a great time playing it with a friend split screen... but that's because we could laugh and joke together over the cheesiness of the plot.

RE5 had subpar controls, no atmosphere, zero scares and was largely unenjoyable without a RL partner. What RE4-5 did, Deadspace did exponentially better. There was no excuse for RE5 to no include strafing while shooting, other than lazy design.

The story arc started from the first RE was finished with 5. Resident Evil needs a reboot. Get it back to its' roots and put horror back into the series.

@ GeneEric.

I didn't like Sheva because she was a terrible idea. Her AI was spotty at best. Her support of my game on the single-player campaign was not only lackluster, but became more of a burden than an assistance. All in all, she was an unnecessary addition to the whole premise that in a survival horror game you are alone trying to survive. More like Capcom trying to jump on the CO-OP bandwagon, not because it made the game better but because they see it as a $ making trend. Also seeing is that I AM black man, it would be tough for me to hate her for such a reason as "she's black", you fucking idiot. Think before you post comments, man. I mean really.

This is what happens when you are left a child that you did not create (Resident Evil), half ass parenting (or game development). On the other hand, Lost Planet gets all the love that it does not deserve. Bring back the original producer, he stills owes us his head!
