I just have to hope that there's some mistranslation afoot here.
Jun Takeuchi, producer of Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2 just told Kotaku that in his opinion, Resident Evil 4 was "... a great game, (but) its appeal was limited somewhat to maniac players", where "With RE5, I wanted to bring the series to a larger audience. I think its important to do the same for the next RE".
Now I see his point on some level, but I have to say that this way of thinking worries me. The RE series got where it is today by bucking trends. When the first game was released, the idea of a haunted house zombie game was completely untested. That first RE title was made not because it was sure to be a big seller, but because the creators were passionate about the concept. The more the series moves away from that forward thinking, rebellious spirit, the more likely that it'll lose its soul. If the RE games continue to drop the things that make them special in order to appeal to fans of Halo, Gears, or Wii Sports, I'll be a sad panda.
The man goes on to say that no producer for RE6 has been identified, and that no port of RE5 is being planned for the Wii. All bad news, all around.
Or am I being to harsh?

I just hope they don't forget that people like single player games too.
Give Sheva both body armors, and SMG/rifle only: I found her formidable enough that she didn't detract from the game throughout :D
I liked both 4 and 5, but so much of 5 seemed like it was so desperately trying to say 'look! We're not a thoughtfully executed Japanese game, we're a musclebound, testosterone-fueled hunk of western action movie!' that wasn't at all appealing to me. If that's the direction they think is going to get them more mainstream appeal, then yeah, I'm way worried.
ZOMBIES + limited ammo + puzzles + no DAMN SHEVA = Good RE title
I'm a hardcore fan of the RE series but I'm seriously disappointed with RE5... 4 years in development and the only new thing they added was coop, which I hated....
But what can you do? You can't expect every single developer who innovates to continue to do so forever. Like in any other industry, game developers are continuously evolving, and while it's sad to see certain developers drop innovation in exchange for larger profits, I think it's more important to look to the future, and to see which of the new guys are willing to bring fresh ideas to the table.
But, as it stands, selling a huge amount of copies of a game is not limited appeal, because many, [/i]many[/i] people played the game, We do not even know how many copies were brought second hand, so the figure could go up by millions.
But it has sold millions of copies in it's lifetime, even a million on the wii, which we know what type of reputation it has in western society, heck around the world. For a game such as RE4 to sell very well on a console that is deemed to be kiddy and just a child's play thing/toy, is a feat in itself.
Re4 was/is loved by many, many, many people, and the game was probably the biggest driving force for RE5 to sell over 5 million copies, IMHO. RE4 is a legendary game, God knows how many gamers were looking forward to RE5. Saying it had limited appeal is unfounded.
The so-called limited appeal was a big reason why the successor sold so well. Yes, the more western approach did help to sell to the crowd that did not play any previous RE games, but a massive amount of people have, and brought RE5 because of RE4's amazing gameplay.
"If the RE games continue to drop the things that make them special in order to appeal to fans of Halo, Gears, or Wii Sports, I'll be a sad panda."
I wonder how it could be designed to appeal to the Wii Sports fans. Anyone got any ideas?
i dont want something that appeals to a mass audience! i want something that appeals to people who dont need explosions every 5 seconds and a roided up faggot for a hero!
...
that thar was a bit rough :B
"I won't give you an eye-jammy for sticking me with Sheva and making me not want to ever play Resident Evil games again."
Im of the opinion that those who didn't like Sheva was because she's black.
tsk tsk.. '___'
Resident Evil 5 was the first game in the series that didn't "wow" me and I'm sad because of that. I hope the creators pull the series in a direction that's more similar to the previous games. Resident Evil 1-3 are gaming classics thanks to excellent characters, stories, and unique controls that made the games stand out from the rest. I don't want a Gears of War clone. If I want to play Gears of War I'll pop in the disc.
The tank controls aren't just unique. They're stiff and archaic!
^___^
i'm all for a small change in RE games. but if the survival horror bit isn't there, there's no point in smacking the RE label on it.
Alone in the Dark wants to have a word with you. It came out 4 years before Resident Evil and was a survival horror game set in a mansion with zombies and weird creatures.
Too bad they won't port it to the Wii. I had fun playing coop at my friend's house, but RE5 was no where near good enough to buy a PS3 for like RE2 was to get me to buy a PSone back in the day. Honestly, when developers aren't focused on "Shiny graphics." they tend to focus more on gameplay and usually to the game's longterm benefit.
Beh, this TGS has seemed to been underwhelming so far. Only a few games I've been interested in. Most anticipated game of the year is Shattered Memories for the same reason that I loved RE4 so much: It's giving the series a much-needed shot in the arm, and in a way that'll set itself apart from its contemporaries not with flashy graphics, but with its controls and interface. And that's more entertaining to me than HD graphics.
RE 4 is better.
RE 4 Wii Edition is the best RE title.
RE 5 is disappointing.
I didn't care for RE 5 in the first place and I'd certainly wouldn't want a watered down Wii port of it.I'm actually more excited for Darkside Chronicles.
Sometimes playing it safe with absolute statements just isn't as fun.
4 was the only game I actually played. Sure, it's not a purist's dream (zomg sellouts), but I played the first RE, and it wasn't for me. Change doesn't have to be bad. After all, would Mario be as good if he stayed in 2D all these years?
With some people, sticking to a tired-and-true formula or changing said formula are both bad things to do. >_>;
RE4 had a nice charm to it too; the dialogue was funny at times and I think I can say that the merchant was one of gaming's most popular characters.
I agree that RE5 probably sold a lot on RE4's back. I bought it because of RE4 and got bored of it pretty quickly after completing it. I had a co-op buddy most of the way through too. He even asked me to play through it more times and it just didnt appeal to me. After playing through RE4 about 20 times in total, on the Gamecube and Wii, I was really looking forward to how long RE5 would last me. Boy was I disappointed.
They should just make a new title rather than playing it safe.
Why can a game only be considered a sucess by some if it appeals to EVERYONE? Nothing appeals to everyone, and if anything ever did try to, it would surely be super generic and dull.

Also I don't know how you could try to bring a new audience to the franchise when 5 is specifically designed to be the end of the overall story from the previous games (minus 4) that's like trying to get people to become star wars fans just by making them watch return of the Jedi without letting them see the previous installments.
RE5 collected dust for a couple weeks until I could find a friend to sit down and play it to completion. I then had a great time playing it with a friend split screen... but that's because we could laugh and joke together over the cheesiness of the plot.
RE5 had subpar controls, no atmosphere, zero scares and was largely unenjoyable without a RL partner. What RE4-5 did, Deadspace did exponentially better. There was no excuse for RE5 to no include strafing while shooting, other than lazy design.
The story arc started from the first RE was finished with 5. Resident Evil needs a reboot. Get it back to its' roots and put horror back into the series.
I didn't like Sheva because she was a terrible idea. Her AI was spotty at best. Her support of my game on the single-player campaign was not only lackluster, but became more of a burden than an assistance. All in all, she was an unnecessary addition to the whole premise that in a survival horror game you are alone trying to survive. More like Capcom trying to jump on the CO-OP bandwagon, not because it made the game better but because they see it as a $ making trend. Also seeing is that I AM black man, it would be tough for me to hate her for such a reason as "she's black", you fucking idiot. Think before you post comments, man. I mean really.
