TGS 08: Square Enix to unveil a game controlled by your brain ... seriously photo

In Robocop, the tragedy inflicted upon Alex Murphy was reversed with crazy technology developed by a corporation with their fingers on the pulse of innovation. NeuroSky (probably smaller than OCP and not looking to buy an entire city, but still in the "now") is the proud developer of a device called the Mindset. Essentially, the machine can read and react to the user’s brainwaves when attached. What is the natural application of such a device? A Square Enix developed game, of course.

Gamasutra is reporting that Square Enix is set to announce a game that will utilize NeuroSky’s creepy technology. It will come in the form of a demo, designed to show what developers can do with a short amount of time with the headphone-shaped mind-controlling brainwave detection device.

The headset will recognize relaxation and concentration and replicate that information into a game. Basically, Mindset will make the user Robocop – minus that whole armor and cybernetics thing. Actually, it won't make users like Robocop. I just happen to like his movie too much.

So if there is like a bug or glitch it will turn everyone into homicidal maniacs ala stephen kings "the cell"?

if so I'm all for it. This world needs a refresher and zombie genocide is quite possibly the best way of going about that.

Robocop's name is ALEX MURPHY, not Peter Murphy. You mixed up the actor's name (Peter Weller) with his character's name :-P

One step closer to Batman & Robin being a reality. Jim Carrey will own all of our brains and we'll be forced to watch The Yes Man on Bluray over and over.

No, but seriously, this kind of technology is going to be great for quadreplegics and other severely handicapped people.

And it will be just plain badass, too.

They want to see how long you can play infinite undiscovery before wanting to get rid of it.

Must of been the same machine used on Square to get them to hold back releasing FF while they port for the 360, yet release Last Remnant for the box and delay the PS3 version.

Check the box the device comes in. I bet its made by Microsoft :D>.

....fanboy joking aside...this is a bit creepy. I think half the fun of gaming is jamming buttons and or getting down with some waggle if you got the WII.

If the sales numbers of Square-Enix games skyrocket after this game is released, some kid of questionable gender with amnisia from a small idyllic village will have to gather a party of diverse characters to take down the evil corporation.

I wonder if my thoughts of "Oh, she's hot. I'd totally do her." read as for in-game commands. Here's to hoping it rewrites the code and makes it happen.

i remember there was a device back in the day called "Mind drive" it hooked onto your finger and you could play a paint game or a skiing game with it.

Cool. Hopefully it's combined w/a new IP and gameplay mechanics. Another JRPG where you select menus to fight through random battles so you can read more text or watch another movie wouldn't be worth the brain-reading hardware.
Ideally users will start casting magic w/their minds for real, even w/out the peripheral.

I think I can see this being a dominant control mechanism in the next 100 years or so, but this isn't going to be very robust or useful just yet. Relax and concentrate? We need more specific data than that.

I saw a video of something like this from GDC a few years ago, but it was called Emotiv. They had a demo set up that basically gave you the force. They had a guy levitating objects in the game world with his mind. It was awesome!
