TGS 08: Sony announces controller wall charger ... for Japan photo

If given the option of only being able to charge my iPhone from the computer or the wall, I would always choose the wall. But the great thing about the iPhone is that both options are on the table. The same can’t be said for Sony’s wireless controllers, which require some sort of USB contact with a machine turned on. Thankfully, the problem of having to leave your PS3 on for the sake of charging is about to end ... in Japan. Sony has announced a wall charger for PS3 wireless controllers.

According to Engadget, the charger will be ready in mid-December for approximately $30. Sony hasn’t given any indication on western release as of yet.

I can’t say that I’m not disappointed, but I’m fairly certain that this item will hop across the pond at some point. I’ve always been mildly fearful that I’m in danger of burning down my house whenever I walk out with two controllers plugged in to my PS3. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I might be in the minority that dont care about a charger. Too many extra cables these days, plug the pad in when playing or during breaks and you are fine. It takes what? an hour to give a decent charge level, its nothing.

It's a fucking powered USB cable. Just get a longer USB cable and plug it in the PS3.

If I owned a PS3, this might be nice, but there are other chargers out there already.

I plug everything into the usb ports of my computer. 1 less transformer = one less fire hazard to worry about.

why don't you just buy a usb to wall socket adapter? it would be pretty much the same thing, except it would be much cheaper and wouldn't have a PlayStation logo.

THAT IS FUCKING AWESOME!! I can hear the collective heads of all of the asshole PS3 fanboys on DToid exploding right now! My Wii and PS3 stand side by side, so I should start doing that ... just because.

Too obvious. Besides, you're assuming that we have USB cables that are the proper length for however far you're sitting from the PS3. When I play, I sit much closer to my PC (~5 feet) than to my PS3 (~10 feet), so it makes more sense plug it into my PC to charge it using the 6-foot USB cable that came with my MP3 player.

They've been selling USB power adapters for a long time, as Swizzler121 pointed out. Here's one for $7.

Take an extension cord, and plug your USB power adapter into it to make this exact same thing for 1/3 of the price.

doesn't most everyone these days have at least one 120volt wall charger with a USB port on it? Come on, i have like 3, they come with everything now a days. And even if you don't, plug it into your computer. or better yet, sell your ps3 and get a console with games

You do realize you can use that same iPhone "charger" to charge your PS3 Controller... right?

I got one of these things:

http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Product.aspx?language=en-CA&catalog=Online&category=USB_Hubs&product=2608258

Makes it so much easier for charging, only need 1 plug then.

No, I can do it for free, although that one looks nicer than 3rd party accessories.
