TGS 08: no press conferences from Nintendo and Sony photo

Tokyo Game Show is a tremendous event, roughly more than twice the size of the old booth babe laden E3. With such a massive amount of people in attendance, it would seem like the ideal venue for the big three to speak to their audiences, but according to a recent report from Gamekyo, the only company holding a press conference at TGS is Microsoft -- Sony won't be holding one, and Nintendo didn't even bother to show up.

Seems odd to say the least, but as TGS is late in the year, perhaps most of the major announcements and plans for the holidays have already been made public. At least Sony is having a cocktail party, which our TGS team will hopefully see lots of games and get ridiculously intoxicated at.

Nintendo is sure this is what is best for its customer base. Not addressing a new threat like Microsoft whatsoever and let it slowly gain a foothold in a market you once had as a given. Smart move, Nintendo. Always thinking ahead like that.

Nintendo never goes to TGS, but Sony? That's really surprising.

Bold or stupid? I thought it was a forgone that Nintendo and Sony would at least back up any progress since E3.

You won't see anything new released so it would just end up being one massive gloat-fest. I think the attendees would much rather be out and playing then sitting around watching some guy play a game that they could be demoing.

I think Microsoft is going to try to impress people at TGS. The thing is I can't figure out if Sony/Nintendo not being present to "compete" will help or hurt Microsoft's position.

I thought Sony had a bunch of unrevealed games to, well, reveal at TGS. When do they plan to do that?

While Nintendo should go to the TGS, it already held its media summit and revealed some awesome new games.

No Nintendo was to be expected since they never go to TGS... But it seems odd that Sony isn't going to show up.

I'm confused... the fact that Sony isn't holding a press conference doesn't mean they/their games won't be there right? Because I swear we were going to hear about some announced titles as well as see some demos of various games by them there. Can someone please clear this up?

Yeah plus does everyone have a short memory here? Nintendo just had they're own big event last week so did anyone honestly think that Nintendo would be attending TGS this week?

I don't know why Sony wouldn't be having a press conference at TGS though. What are they going to be waiting till GDC next March? Which is the next big industry event!

I think the Japanese game companies have totally lost it in the brain. This isn't such a big thing for Nintendo, because Miyamoto has lost it already (see Wii Music, Wii Fit), and Sony has been outright weird as of this current generation of consoles.

Oh well, can't helped. Congrats to Microsoft for winning this one, by default, as far as press conferences go.

And showing off the DSi doesn't justify a big event...there wasn't really anything new at the press conference I didn't know about, except the new DSi, which looks awful.
