During the Microsoft Keynote at TGS earlier, a few new bits about Halo Wars and the Halo 3 expansion were revealed. First up, and something that just annoys me, the Flood will be in Halo Wars. Unless everyone ends up dying in the end, the reveal of the Flood kind of screws with the Halo storyline.

It wasn’t specified if you’ll actually be able to play as the Flood, but don’t be surprised if they are. Halo Wars is still dated for early next year.

Now, on to the Halo 3 campaign expansion. This new trailer, that you can watch above, premiered during the Keynote that continues on from where the last trailer left off at. The expansion is going to be called Halo 3 Recon and is a prologue to the Halo 3 story. You’ll be playing the game through the eyes of an ODST Marine that takes place before the events of Halo 3 and yes, you can has Recon armor.

The trailer shows the ODST soldier hiding from a pack of Brutes after getting out of his drop pod. We see the ODST soldier holding a brand new weapon, which has to mean that new weapons will be a part of the new DLC. The trailer ends with the ODST following a path that's being created by the Superintendent (the A.I.). Halo 3 Recon will be out in Fall of 2009.

I'm actually excited for this campaign expansion and super happy that this is a prologue and not a continuation. How about you? Are you excited?

To the delight of devoted fans across the world, at the Tokyo Game Show Microsoft debuted Halo 3: Recon, developed exclusively for Xbox 360® by acclaimed developer Bungie. This new chapter in the Halo saga lets you experience events leading up to the epic story told in Halo 3 through the eyes of a new hero in the Halo universe.

The stand-alone expansion, set to release in fall 2009, extends the award-winning Halo® 3 experience with hours of new campaign excursions and multiplayer gameplay. In addition, attendees were given an all-new glimpse of the Xbox 360 exclusive strategy game Halo Wars from Ensemble Studios. The campaign mode provided a thrilling taste of the revolutionary gameplay and new perspective of the Halo universe. Enjoy the full experience when Halo Wars hits retailers in early 2009.

Game Details

This new chapter in the Halo universe includes the following:

  • All-new campaign content: The Halo 3: Recon campaign is an intriguing side story that takes place during the terrifying events leading up to the Master Chief’s return to New Mombasa in Halo 3. Experience the fate of Earth from the brand-new perspective of a special forces ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper), adding a unique outlook and new gameplay elements to the events that unfold in the trilogy’s finale. While the feel of this new chapter greatly resembles that of previous Halo experiences, Halo 3: Recon will require you to employ more elements of stealth and cunning than ever before.
  • Prepare to drop: Known for their courage, valor and, at times, insanity, ODSTs are among the fiercest UNSC soldiers, priding themselves on being the first unit deployed into hostile situations. While not as large or supernaturally gifted as their Spartan comrades, these "Hell Jumpers" more than compensate with their ferocious attitudes and unwavering nerve.
  • Expanded multiplayer collection:No Halo experience would be complete without groundbreaking multiplayer content, and Halo 3: Recon gives fans more of what they love. With exclusive new maps and expanded Forge options, Xbox LIVE® Gold members will find more multiplayer content than ever before with Halo 3: Recon.
  • Ever-growing community options: Enjoy all the great Halo 3 technological innovations, including Saved Films, screenshots, Campaign Scoring, and four-player co-op. All of the new multiplayer maps fully support the Forge editor, offering endless gameplay customization possibilities.

So um... will this play exactly like halo 3 or will it be more tactical since you're human?

I'll be keen to see how this turns out, it'll be nice if they add a bit more personality to the character when you're using him too.

TheRemedy: Will play the same since it's the Recon Armor, a variation of the Halo 3 suit. Plus, if they change up the gameplay style, it wouldn't be an expansion pack.

Erm....This TGS right? I thought Japan could care less about halo.

I'm excited, I really enjoyed halo 3 and wouldn't mind more at all. Plus it'd be nice to actually get to play as someone other than the master chief or arbiter, there seems to be so much expanded universe stuff for halo but nothing in game form

Fall 09?
Thats a while to go. I was expecting it early next year.
Also, how much will it cost?

so finally a more human character for the player to connect with? I wonder if the covenant will seem bigger through the eyes of your character, since he isn't the size of Master Chief...

Called it....well....mostly. Kind of wish you had a squad with you (though I didn't exactly expect Ghost Recon-ish squad options with this just being an expansion). Also Fall 09 seems like a long ass ways away for just an expansion. Looking forward to it though.

Um, Hamza, he's not wearing Recon armor. That's the ODST armor. The title has nothing visibly to do with the armor of the same name.

I love how SI isnt a bad guy like some people were claiming,
i like how he told the Odst to go right and proceed with caution, Could be preety cool with him as your cortana kind of character .With him guiding u albeit glitched up and only able to speak in alerts like "wheres maddie" and such

ALSO THE ODST HAS A SILENCER
that kinda gives us a new slant with playing halo with stealth.

Wooo! I'm definitely excited for this. Halo 3 was an awesome game despite the whole "it's cool to hate Halo" phenomenon.

I hope, like Jerkbutt mentioned, that the covenant will seem much bigger to you since you are just human.

Really? Did you expect Shivering Isles to be free? Do you expect Wrath of the Lich King to be free?

why the hell would they give you a free expansion?!? Yes, I have a great idea! Let's spend vast amounts of our companies resources created a full expansion and do it all for free!

I'm excited for this but at the same time disappointed that I will have to wait until fall 2009 :(

This game will not be free, nor should it be free. You're getting an entirely seperate, different game. Have we seriously taken bitching to a whole new level, here? As GuitarAtomik said, this is like expecting WoW or Oblivion expansions to be free. This isn't just an extra level or two -- this is a whole new game, akin to the Half-Life 1 episodes.

...Did you guys see that highly modified SMG? That was the sexiest weapon I've ever seen in a Halo game.

I'm stoked and I'm mad it's going to take so long to bring it out. I was foolishly hoping it would be this fall, but I guess the more time they get to work on it the better the product.

Also, the Super Intended is a pretty cool guy. Him helping you out by way of messages could be pretty neat. Here's hoping Bungie outdoes Halo 3's campaign! Shouldn't be too hard.

:P

That's pretty cool actually! Always thought the Helljumpers were badass. And I like the idea of seeing familiar events from a new perspective, like Sharpless said, a la Half Life Blue Shift etc. Wonder if we'll see Master Chief in passing or at least the results of his actions, but the game might take place too early.
