TGS 08: Language barrier not the reason we said 'WTF' to Linger in Shadows photo

After waiting in line for close to 20 minutes, I was only given five minutes with Linger in Shadows at Tokyo Game Show. When I told the girl working the booth what I wanted to play (it was part of their 8-title PlayStation Network area), she looked at me funny, as if I was the first person to ask her all day.

"Not game," she said in forced English. "Just watch?"

I nodded, because based on what I had heard about Linger in Shadows, I knew exactly what she was trying to communicate. By all accounts, it's really not game at all; Sony is calling it "interactive digital art." But with a controller in my hand, I found it difficult to not try to play a game where none existed.

Linger plays out much like a movie, only it's interactive. By tilting the controller, I was able to look around at different areas of the environment as a non-interactive camera followed black smoke throughout a city landscape. At certain points I was able to pause the action, and then shake the controller until the screen crackled with fuzz and faded to black, before revealing a new scene.

If there's a story, five minutes with Linger certainly didn't hint at it or uncover any clues as to what was really going on. It certainly does play out like an experimental film, a unique nightmare that could either leave your scratching your head or thinking about it for days.

And while Linger in Shadows is certainly not a "game," like a game it will (quite confusingly) support trophies when it comes to PlayStation Network this winter. I look forward to reading the vast interprations of just what's lingering in these shadows.

This thing is awesome. Just go ahead and download it (it's only $3). Make sure to play in the dark too.

Spoilers, sort of...

Full thing on Youtube.

Thats the 7 minute long game/demo/whatever. Personally, I like it - the music is incredible. To be honest I think people are looking far too far into it...it's not a game, get over it. If you like it, you like it. If you don't, you don't.

It probably took me 5 minutes to figure out what that pic was

If a japanese booth girl asked me "Not game. Just watch?" I don't think I would have been so sure as to what she was trying to communicate.

But maybe it's just me.

It's cool how the controls are implemented in the 'game', and it looks imcredible, however, you do get a bad case of WTF when you watch the video, I just don't 'get it.

But it is good mindfuck, and cheap too, not to mention the piss-easy trophies in the game.

I haven't bought it but I remember watching a video of the whole thing, a while back. Not sure if someone on here posted it or not, but all I remember that it was nothing but "lol wut" material.

This shit is fucking ridiculously weird. I bought it last night, and while it doesn't last very long, its a good 3 dollars well spent.

I've always liked the Demoscene, and this is a great way to cross barriers from the PC market to the console market. Also, its the easiest 10 trophies anyone will ever get on the PS3.

Go ahead and click R3 and L3 at the menu.... you'll see.

Am I in a time machine?

Just buy it. Sure it's only 7 minutes long, but you have to play through it a few times to get all of the trophies. It's worth the $2.99.

It's already on the network, and I picked it up. It's actually quite interesting to "play". It runs a quick scene, then rewinds, allowing you to reverse and fast forward as you will. Each scene has a few portions which you can interact with, with sticks, motion controls, whatever. To move to the next scene you have to find a small "disruption" where the video triggers vibrations and such. Each such vibration can be interacted with, like by shaking the controller or tapping buttons. Triggering the disruption enough causes a violent shift to the next part of the scene. If anything, it's really artsy.

People have a mad boner for this, and I think its just because people tell them to. I bought and "played it," while it's cool it isn't AMAZING. I just got all the trophies 2 seconds ago, I'll probably never look at it again.

Linger in Shadows is made by Plastic a Polish group from the Demoscene. They're creating 'Into the Pink' right now and that is going to be finished real soon too.
Linger in Shadows is great. As well as the 'secret part' you can unlock.

I "played" it, and even though I knew full well that it's not a game I immediately re-"played" it, futiley hoping to try and save that poor dog... Oh well, it was a neat little experiment, and only three bucks, plus I got my very first trophies...

"I hope this does not become a trend for reasons I have no desire to flesh out here. I will just sit quietly and hope..."

This statement alone is more surreal and esoteric than the $3 demo about the flying dog.

TL;DR: lolwut?

Ya, it's already out dude. And you could probably finish it in 5 minutes. No story, just trippy shit. Good if you're looking for something artistic. Although I still haven't unlocked all the trophies, which hints at "interactions" that I've yet to discover. So perhaps this title goes a bit deeper than I thought.

What, that the various networks be used for something other than hideous remakes and casual pablum? Sure, it's charging for non-games, but that's ok in some respects. We pay to go to art museums, right? And in this case, it isn't a vague case of "is this game art", it's a case of art being on a platform normally associated solely with games, to which I say, hell yes.

its a rip off. 2.99 for this? i bought it played it 6 times since and what did i get from it? half the trophies and half of them are glitched and wont unlock for some reason.....

This is just expensive. And so are the themes. If it's a demo (as in a demo from a demo scene), it should be free. Let the demo guys show your PS3's capabilities, sony. But don't ask money for it. It has trophies to attract the trophy whores. Not that I am not one, but I'll refrain from buying this.

Why does being unintelligible immediately qualify this as artistic? Sounds to me like this is a case of something made to seem artistic. Just random crap tossed lazily at you with a straight face and then you think "oh my, this is way over my head". In reality, it's just stupid.

People really hype the hell out of anything nowadays don't they? This was really just not worth the time. You want an interactive move, play MGS4.

Robbo_the_hood: Art is subjective. You can't quantify it. And by dismissing it as naive and suggesting that it's only given an art tag because people "don't get it", is no different than me suggesting that maybe you're just a bit too thick and unsophisticated to appreciate artistic expression - an equally unfair and pointless statements. It is what it is, and you either like it or you don't.

Personally, I have a huge appreciation for the technical merit of demoscene work, and while often the craft can overshadow the art, I found Linger to be an interesting, visually arresting piece. The trophies are just there to give people a bit more incentive to buy it, especially those who wouldn't normally be interested in interactive art.

Art means different things to different people. If all of art meant the same to everyone, it would have a purpose and it therefore wouldn't be art.

If you listen to minimalist music for example, it might just sound like a cat walking on a piano to you...but it is infact one of the most complicated genres of music you'll find. Is it not art?

Bottom line: just because it seems unintelligible does not prevent it from being art. If there doesn't appear to have any obvious meaning, often you find the meaning from your own interpretation.

Nope...Robbo_the_hood is right. You're all pretty retarded or pretentious enough to think there's something to this ridiculous farce. This whole personal interpretation thing is bullshit too. The artist either means for something to be interpreted a certain way, or he is too shitty/untalented/unimaginative to find a way to create meaning in his work(and as a cop out...tells people that it's open to interpretation). Fuck that.

Ronsauce: Fair enough, you seem to feel pretty strongly about this. But as a fine arts major (LOLburgerflipper) I have to disagree :) Incidently, what kind of music do you like? Because I'm pretty sure you're wrong to like it, and your lack of refinement is the only reason you find any value in it. Any one with any real intelligence, etc. etc. would see things my way.

Sweeping generalisations FTL.

Well, I'd certainly say it was an interesting experience, though I couldn't point out exactly why.

I watched the non-interactive vid, then played the interactive version twice and I got all the trophies. Super easy and yes, it's VERY unlikely I'll ever look at the damn thing again.

I don't know whether I'm happy with the purchase or not, though if I was a trophy/achievement whore, 2.99 and 30 minutes for all those trophies is a deal that can't be beat.

Actually Plastic already released Into the Pink at NVScene 2008. I didn't quite like it as much as Linger... you should check some other stuff from them:
