TGS 08: Bungie says Halo Recon is the last Halo project photo

In an interview with gamesindustry.biz, Bungie PR director Brian Jarrard said that Bungie’s newly announced expansion Halo 3 Recon could be the last Halo title the developer plans to make. Once finished, the development team for the title will disperse and move on to other unique titles.

From the interview:
But I think when this project wraps up in a couple of months that will be the time when that team moves on to something else - part of that team will move on to something else and part of them will probably be absorbed into one of the other projects that are already on the way.
Those “other projects” may not be Halo related. When asked if Recon would be a “final statement” for the trio of games currently being worked on, Jarrard said, “I think so” before talking about support with map packs on both Halo 3 and Halo 3 Recon.

This now begs the question of what else Bungie is working on. It sounds like they have either two new IPs in the pipeline, or another Halo title pretty close to being finished. I’m certainly excited to find out, how about you guys?

Recon is likely Bungie's last Halo project but I completely doubt Microsoft will let their plump cash-cow die. I'd be interested to see what else Bungie can make. I'm sure it will be great.

Hating on Halo is trendy...

I enjoy Halo, and look forward to Recon and the other projects.

Myth? did Bungie ever buy the rights back? I miss that game. I hope it isn't a Marathon. Bungie always had a talent for breaking out into new realms before Microsoft bought them. I look forward to what they are up to. My bet, whatever it is, will not be a FPS but multiplayer will definitely be a part of it.

MMO console game? Only if...

halo is fun. why all the hate? it's not perfect but it is a very solid multiplayer experience. maybe not the best, but definitely very polished and plenty of people still play it.

I'm gonna miss it. It really did have a great story to tell. I hope to see the Chief's return at the end of Recon though.

I'd like to find out exactly how they're planning multiplayer, because if it's not exactly the same thing as Halo 3's multiplayer, it's really going to fracture the playerbase. It'll be interesting to see how they approach that.

Regardless of who works on the inevitable Halo anythings, I just want the universe to keep growing. I love all the story behind everything, and have always really enjoyed learning why everything is how it is in that realm.

I'm probably the only one, but I'm a little sad Bungie isn't working on it anymore- if only for the fact that new ventures into that universe will be of a different capacity than I now Bungie's able to produce.

Hating on Halo may be trendy, but it's only because it's appropriate and deserving.

As for no more Halo? I'll believe it when I see it. Bungie has yet to impress me with anything they've worked on (that includes Marathon). Maybe a new IP will give them a creative kick start to produce something of quality.

With every continuing iteration of halo, people will lose respect for something that was a true marvel when it was just 3 games. Though naturally you will have the fanboy/girl legions following behind chief.

Although it's cool to hate on Halo, it's not without merit. When the masses are buying a game that is mediocre in every way, it's hard not to get annoyed and sling some hate around.

I'm not the Halo zealot I used to be, but I still love the games. Bungie are great developers, and I'm really excited to see what they do next.

@brainderailment: Really? Mediocre? I'd hardly say that. As far as shooters go, Halo is really only outclassed by the Half-Life series (imo).

I love Halo. It's awesome. Sad to see Bungie stop making the games... but I hope they oversee Halo 4, like kinda watch over it and give tips even if they aren't the primary developers.

Halo is a solid and fun game series.

All the Halo hate stems from the fact that it's a popular game franchise. I'm sure if it were made by a trendy and little know developer everyone would be all over it.

It's really the same mentality scene-kids have.

The Halo series were good games. Halo 3 was a dissapointment imho but that's probably because of the hype juggernaught. With that in mind I'd be glad to see Halo end or at least take a break. While I know the relentless marketing and hype serve their dark, nefarious purpose from a financial point of view, Halo reached its critical mass a long time ago and I honestly think more games and Halo-related hysteria only hurt a once extremely well liked franchise.
Hell, just look at how many people chimed in here just to say Halo sucks. The corrosive effect of hype at work ladies and gentlemen.

Halo 3 and Metroid Prime are the only console FPS I can play without getting motion sickness. They're perfectly balanced for new or experienced gamers - nobody ever mentions this.

To you dipshits that are saying people say they don't like Halo because it's trendy: FUCK. YOU. I don't like what Halo has become, because it sucks ass. It's not fun. Halo 1 multiplayer was. After that, it turned to shit. After they realized how shitty 2 was, they managed to fix it a little, but the same punk-ass idiot kids that loved 2 kept playing, so all you get to play with is pre-pubescent shit heads that think it's the greatest thing since tits. I'm not saying the reason they suck is because of the people that play them, but it just adds to the fact that it evolved into such a shitfest.

"I like Halo, therefore anyone that hates it is just being trendy and has never played it to know." Suck my over-shielded dick.

So, yeah. Halo sure as hell isn't dying, but it'll be good to see Bungie focus its talents elsewhere. Hopefully whomever MS hands the franchise off to won't turn it into shit. Bungie obviously couldn't please the entire fanbase, but they've done a great job with it so far.

Bungie never said they were done with the franchise, just that they would be moving to new IPs. And they have. They've just yet to announce what other things they're working on. The team that's working on H3 Recon is a smaller team, while everyone else tends to those other projects.

Holy hell, this comment section is nasty...

I have seen many, many comments on how Halo is mediocre, shit, terrible, worst game ever... I have NEVER seen anything to back this up, that wasnt a personal opinion.

Lets face it guys; a lot of you just dont like Halo. Thats fine; no-one likes everything. Why you feel the need to belittle the series at every opportunity, to the point of commenting on articles about a game series you dont like, im not sure. The only thing i can think of is that youre upset or jealous at how much more popular Halo is than the games you like; but i dont understand that at all.

Heres how i see it: Halo is a game series. Its better polished and designed than most (but certainly not all), and appeals to many people. Admittedly, a lot of those people are dickheads, but thats hardly the games fault.

As for what the article is actually about... i hope this is the last Halo game by Bungie. They need to get some fresh ideas going. Im looking forward to whatever they think of next.
