It'll be hot and it's going to sell millions. You are going to be a millionaire. We're all going to be rich! RIGHT NOW, FOR FREE
Also I managed to get my vita to charge on usb from my playstation while getting content, it didn't make the little charging animation on the battery but it charged. Also I typed this on my Vita. It works well enough.
Update dat shit sony. I'm willing to go through hours of firmware updates to fix this.
While I understand your pain, we are talking about a system that is barely more powerful than an Xbox 1. Which could not even check emails without hacks.
Also: can you please do a proper side by side battery life test for the Vita and 3DS (full brightness, full volume, 3D & wireless on)? You stated in your review that the Vita doesn't last as long as the 3DS for gameplay, but none of the comparison videos I've seen thus far show that. The Vita seems to get about 30-60 minutes more juice. Thanks.
however, being Sony, I doubt they will fix them
But you really hate the Vita mnu music that much? I kinda like it. I mean, its no something I'd ever buy, but its pleasant and pretty well done.
That was deliberate. There are a few physical gripes we could bring up, but I wanted them to be theoretically fixable issues.
I say theoretically, because for all the sarcastic, "firmware could fix this," notes, we all fucking know firmware WON'T fix most of this shit.
i was expecting Vita(and the upcoming PS4) would improve on that if sony would have look with the faults.
but this seriously??
cannot charge USB while turned on or playing, shitty browser, seem to load alot more than the PSP, annoying installs everywhere(heck i can't even rename or assign new folders on PS3, at least the PSP had it), clunky management, no custom music during at home, bullshit social features(honestly they should have removed it altogether)
BUT THE WORST OF THE ALL.
"There's no way to check up on PS Vita save game data without opening the game itself, as only PSP save data has a menu item in the settings. If I want to check whether something has data saved to the memory card or the internal memory, either I can't do it, or the option is hidden away in some infernal corner of the console.
I also don't like how certain apps have to remain on the home screen."
god damn seriously sony?? you won't even let us check our saves to see how many slots or memory has taken it.
Jim please tell me you can still copy your save in any USB drive or such???
please please please tell me they still allowed us to do that.
i can't believe how fucked up sony did with the vita. simple things like management, convenience, and user interface.
they can't even do a decent job a that thing.
wow just wow sony.
will be waiting for a 2nd revision for sure. they better fix this through firmware updates.
"the inability to change the wallpaper,"
SERIOUSLY???
come on, even the PSP can fucking do that.
Defenders of Vita: "iPhone didn't have everything it does now."
The point defenders are missing: Steam and iPhone had nothing of their kind to compete with or be compared to when they were new. Origin and Vita have plenty of things to be compared to now and are not breaking any new ground. As such, they don't get these protections from criticism.
That's why I rail on Vita about memory. Apple devices tend to come with 8GB storage at minimum and now iPhone4 on up have iCloud backup options. 3DS, along with certain Android devices, support SD cards for more storage - so here again we have options.
It doesn't matter that at one time iPhones didn't multitask. They do now and have since well before we knew Vita was coming down the pipes. To have a browser that's actually worse than PSP's isn't helping matters. On my 3DS I can hit the home screen, have access to a browser or notes and be back in my game within moments.
Do you think there is anything that you could find yourself using the Vita for occasionally, besides all of the exclusive games?
For example: I used my PSP GO all the time to watch movies while I was away from my computer, rather than on my phone (Galaxy S). I chose to do this for a variety of reasons, even though my phone's screen is way nicer than my PSP's was. However I would NEVER use the PSP browser if my phone was available, etc.
So, I know you have an iPad that you throughly enjoy, but is there anything that you could see yourself going to your new Vita to do (obvs besides games). I feel like with all the electronic devices around, fewer people have just one device that they use for everything. Maybe you could write an article on that.
Just curious, as I miss my PSP a lot and I can't wait for my Vita. I'm not expecting it to be my one Go-to device but I hope I feel at home using it more than my poor phone.
You can change the wallpaper there are many videos on Youtube that show this ability, Lockscreen and OS background.
That being said, i still dont think we should be comparing Apple design to Sony or Nintendo.
Apple made a deal with the evil Archons, and are purveyors are black wizardry upon our souls. Totally unfair.
I don't have time to do this. if anyone is interestedin waht is sure to be a hilarious parody that goes viral and makes you famous, please go ahead and make it, all I ask is a small mention in the credits.
@The Silent Protagonist
Sorry but I think you're missing my point,
I mean, developing a solid & stable OS from scratches takes time, adding features also takes time, you don't through on features unless you stabilize the core one.
For example, windows phone launched on 2010, believe it or not it didn't have Copy and Paste and lots of features which iPhone and android been rocking for years.
But the OS developed quite alot by the release of Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango". which was released on September, 2011.
Although, Microsft is the biggest software company in the world yet, they couldn't release a mobile OS with everything out of the box at launch. it took them a year and half to reach to the competition (and even more if we considered development started earlier), I could say it was worth the wait.
I repeat what I said, "developing a solid & stable OS takes time,"
Still knowing how the PSP born without even a browser then received it with updates during its life time, and even got adobe flash player version 6 support (back in 2006), I still believe that at some point Vita OS will fix most of those issues. As long as Mr. Yoshida will remain in charge, cause he's the only one at Sony that keep listening to consumers complaint and might help to talk with other Sony divisions.
Unfortunately, We all know that Sony is remarkably slow in this regard, and major update won't be coming for long period of time.
PS: you may call me a "defender" just because I point out the obvious. I don't believe in any protections from criticism. In contrary, I think Jim's article was really great, it would help the Vita to improve in the long run more than a cheerleading article saying everything is so great.
@The Silent Protagonist "Steam and iPhone had nothing of their kind to compete with or be compared to when they were new."
I'm sorry again but that statement is not entirely correct regarding our context, at least for the iPhone (I don't know about Steam as I never used it). "Smartphones" with those same feature I was talking about did exist. a little bit pain in the ass to navigate but it's there.
My six years old Nokia smartphone with Symbian OS had copy & paste across the OS, multitasking, folders & MMS.
I believe windows mobile 6 had those and more.
Because those are standard features for "samrtphones" back in the day, they were the most wanted features to come to the original iPhone.
However, building Stable OS was a priority for apple, as I explained earlier.
There are two options, either release a stable coreOS and add features & refine later on as you listen to feedback. or wait and postponed the launch until everything on the OS is ready after 2 years.
Microsoft did the same for WP7 even though it was behind the standard, and I think the same happens for Vita.
Also, who the fuck told sony that the vita UI should look similar to restaurant flair from chochkie's? Those buttons look so damn lame.
Ahh. I retract my comment then.
I was gonna call you out for not paying attention to what the article was really saying and just going for the easy "bash Jim Sterling" comment, but Jim already beat me to it. Good on ya Jim.
As for the Vita, I'm honesty not all that interested in it, for the moment. After finally being able to use my 3DS regularly I'm not ready to invest in a PSV (which I think may be the problem Sony's having). And though it was not the intention of the article, these little problems don't make the prospect of buying one any more appealing. Granted the 3DS has a few of these problems, but I already have one of those soooooo yeah.
Just gonna wait until a new Jack&Daxter, or Kingdom Hearts, or Megaman, or Darkstalkers, or Final Fantasy, or whatever comes to the system.
Let me know if you want me to send you a free trial of UNLIMITED Aol for 30 days. I have a few cds I can spare.
Also, I thought I just read an article where the Vita did have multitasking and that it worked great?
Bottom line is that there's no excuse for not leveraging their programmers to either A: Be lazy and license the Android OS from Google for a superb OS out of the box or B: Use ALL of their company resources to design a superb OS that consumers will be accepting of not tolerant of.
Side note, not being able to leave my game open while surfing the web (as ugly as it is) to find info about the game is completely senseless. What the point of advertising "6 apps at once" if the system force closes 4 of them?
I absolutetly love when people critique a device I will buy and support and find these flaws I might have otherwise disregarded as a quirky thing. The critique smacks some sense into me and take me out of that bubble that the device is perfect.
I do not agree with all points made for instance, the fundamental understanding that this is a (Playstation, that should be made clear bc of the way the make hardware high spec, but fully open) console devs can/should squeeze every inch of memory out of is gets generalized here. That is why games can not run while having a browser tha might have a flash player that could take up a lot of resources and cause a game or the VITA to crash (because the code will just be to much for a user session).
So yeah, Sony give the notifications a minimalist philosophy and make a single click exception for stuff like settings, friendslist, etc.
I am a FEB owner and so far I see the issues they need to fix, but just like all new things, give them some time and you will be rewarded.
If you remember the launch PS3 and compare it to the current 4.11 software on it, not considering the 60GB Backwards Compatible Model that is (which I still have), a lot of progress was made.
We shall see the same here again.
