Ten reasons why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV photo

Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV. This is actually an undeniable fact because a writer on the Internet has said it is so, thus it cannot ever be refuted. Don't get me wrong -- GTA IV is a great game and one that deserves many of the accolades that it has received, but it's no Saints Row 2.

Of course, it would be wrong to make such a bold claim without venturing to justify it, even if those who would disagree should be strung up for going against the absolute truth. To back me up, I have ten solid facts that prove my righteousness and adequately display that Saints Row, a series that started out as a poor attempt to emulate Rockstar's controversial franchise, has now surpassed it.

Read on for ten reasons why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV ...

1. In-Mission Checkpoints:

One thing that has always bugged me about Grand Theft Auto is that if you fail a mission or are killed/busted, you have to do the entire thing again, including the boring drive to wherever the meat of the mission is. Saints Row 2 makes this a thing of the past with in-mission checkpoints that help remove some aspects of a stage that would bore you to death upon repeated attempts.

That's not to say that the checkpoints are always well-implemented or sensible, but at least you don't have to drive from the mission's activation all the way to where the action is every time you die.

2. Cars are actually fun to drive:

Why on Earth Rockstar decided to strive for "realism" is something I'll never fathom. This desire that developers have to be "realistic" all the time is helping to kill the fun factor of a lot of games nowadays, and one of the worst examples was Rockstar's decision to remove the arcade feel of their vehicles.

Saints Row 2 makes no such "innovation," and as a result, its cars don't handle like blobs of spunk on a rubber sheet covered in soapy water. The controls are decidedly old-fashioned, and the cars grip the road without swerving uncontrollably for players who don't want to act like they're driving a real car. Seriously, I'd learn to drive in real life if I wanted that experience.

I want cars that can go really really fast yet are still able to turn corners with very little penalty. I want to be able to crash without flying out of the windscreen every time -- something which got old, boring and time consuming after the first few times it happened in GTA IV. I want something that is not realistic. I got what I wanted from the cars in Saints Row 2.

3. Weapons are far more varied and awesome:

As part of its strive for realism, GTA IV cut out several elements that had made the previous games so much fun. Chief among these cuts were the numerous and outragous weapons that had graced the the GTAs of old. No more chainsaws. No more flamethrowers. Just very grounded, very real, very tiresome guns.

Enter Saints Row 2, a game that embraces the chainsaw and is more than happy to give flamethrowers the love that Rockstar denied them. Not only that, it throws in a few more fantastic firearms into the mix as well. Fancy a pimp cane that doubles as a gun? How about a foam hand that performs insta-kill bitchslaps and sends enemies flying into the air? All this and more can be found in Stilwater, not so much in Liberty City.

SR2's arsenal is varied, fun and in several instances, hilarious. Exactly what a gamer should want from his weaponry.

4. You can be a cockney bastard:

We're going to look at Saints Row's customization in a few moments, but one custom option deserves its own section -- the terrible, Dick Van Dyke-quality English voiceover that you can choose to give your character. It's so deliciously bad that it becomes awesome, and I can't think of Saints Row 2 now without inwardly grinning at its inclusion. Niko Bellic is a great main character and everything, but he's no cockney bastard.

5. Real customization:

Yes, GTA IV lets you pick out some clothes for Niko to wear, but that doesn't even come close to the level of personalization that is available in Saints Row 2. With the option to shape your character however you wish, you'll be able to pick an aforementioned voice, the way you walk, how you compliment or taunt other people and what color your hair is. With enough tweaking (almost too much tweaking) you can create anything you like.

Then there are the hundreds and hundreds of clothing options available to you, embarrassing Niko's rather drab selection of suits and brown shirts. You can choose to make your character look stylish or stupid, with anything from sharp suits to hot dog costumes. You can even opt to go nude, with an amusing pixelation effect to keep things "tasteful."

We're not done there, either. You can choose to pimp out your car, you can select what your bodyguards look like and you can change the way your home looks. While GTA IV feels like Rockstar's game, Saints Row 2 feels like your game. It's an important distinction and, in this case, works in SR2's favor.

6. Lots more to do:

Grand Theft Auto IV had some really good missions and a great story, but beyond that there was never really anything compelling. The dating and friendship minigame was interesting, but it eventually got boring having to deal with Roman calling you every half hour to invite you to go bowling. Other distractions, such as darts or TV, did very little to keep one coming back for more.

Once again, Saints Row 2 trumps GTA IV, with a wide variety of minigames and distractions on offer, some of them pretty damn robust in their own right. You can play in-game videogames, for example, including an awesome zombie-killing game. You can buy various businesses to earn extra income. The activities have also returned from the first game, with old favorites like Insurance Fraud, where you jump into oncoming traffic for money, being joined by such family-friendly jaunts as wearing a flame-retardant suit, setting yourself alight, and then driving a dirtbike around the city to ignite as much as possible.

Now that is gameplay.

7. Superior multiplayer:

The multiplayer in GTA IV wasn't really all that fantastic. It had its moments and the races could certainly be fun, but the deathmatches were bad and the game "lobby" is about as intuitive as heart surgery.

SR2's multiplayer, on the other hand, is far more fun. The simple deathmatches are where the game truly shines, and they are so much more interesting than the comparatively quiet and bland matches of GTA IV. The weapon variety and superior vehicles come into play here, providing an environment far more suited to online play.

The co-op is also an excellent addition, with a fantastic drop-in/drop-out usability that means you never know who might pop into your version of Stilwater.

But the most glorious part of the SR2 multiplayer is that it's not controlled by Niko Bellic's stupid little cellphone. It's actually done properly and isn't a complete inconvenience. Victory!

8. It looks better:

Wait, what? I know what you're thinking -- Saints Row 2's graphics really aren't very hot compared to most console titles out there, and it's certainly not graphically superior to GTA IV.

True, but that doesn't mean that Saints Row 2 can't look better.

Sure, SR2 isn't powered by Euphoria, and it doesn't have believable facial animation or much level of detail to its aesthetics, but unlike Liberty City, Stilwater has more than three colors in it. SR2 is bright and striking, and what its characters lack in detail are made up for with memorable design. SR2 looks better than GTA IV because it doesn't look like everything else.

9. It's much funnier:

GTA IV had its funny moments, but SR2 had me laughing out loud with only ten minutes of gameplay. From the inventively sadistic cutscenes to the immature jokes, Saints Row 2 is a funny game, if you lower your IQ enough to have fun. It's definitely stupid, but it doesn't really matter when you're watching a man getting tattooed with ink that's been secretly mixed with toxic waste.

And again, I present Mr. Cockney Bastard.

10. It's not ashamed of its own stupidity:

GTA IV seemed almost blatant in its efforts to get away from the Grand Theft Autos of old, and it is to be commended for trying something like that. However, you can't really compare to something that is almost delicious in its stupidity, and refuses to apologize for it.

Saints Row 2 honestly doesn't care whether or not you think it's puerile. One gets the impression that the team at Volition all sat around a table, wrote ideas on a piece of paper and then used every single idea they had, no matter how vulgar. SR2 knows that when you buy a sandbox game, you want to do stupid things stupidly while being stupid, and it is more than happy to oblige. It doesn't fight your attempts to cause mayhem, or your bloody rampages, and practically delights when you drive on the wrong side of the road.

Ultimately, Saints Row 2 does what some videogames seem not to be doing lately -- it remembers it's a videogame and acts accordingly. It's not trying to pull on your heartstrings and it's not trying to force anything on you. It literally gives you a sandbox and tells you to have fun. Grand Theft Auto IV is, I reiterate, great. But it's not nearly as fun as SR2

And that's why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV.

Fact.

I am having trouble thinking of a single reason why GTA4 would be better than SR2 ;)

SR2 is the most fun, interesting, and enjoyable games I have played this year. If you haven't played it, do so.

I didn't like the original Saints Row (played the demo) because it felt a bit too much like the older GTA games.

At the moment, I didn't like GTA4 either, so I am tempted to try out Saints Row 2 and decide whether to get it or not. It seems like a GTA clone, but from what you said, its probably done everything RIGHT.

The problem is, GTAIV is simply not GTA San Andreas. You shouldn't compare it to Saints Row 2. If you want a fun Sandbox game, get Saints Row. GTAIV is a story driven game, very well made (vioceacting, script) with some grand characters (even though it loses it's geniality at some point). There's no motivation to do crazy stuff, it doesn't fit into the concept. But sadly, this step was only taken half hearted - I think they could have made something way better if they would have gone all the way with their changes (Why does Nico have moral issues in killing someone from the story, but you can drive over people as much as you like?).

Wow, what a shocking and outrageous post Jim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought this game just because I love open world mayhem and Saints Row 1 wasn't terrible (though I never even bothered to finish it).
What I got was a game that impressed me at so many moments and gave me so much pure JOY that it's become one of my favourite games ever.
It's like injecting yourself with pure fun...without the horror of injecting yourself with anything.

Saints Row 2 is pure fucking JOY. I can be Daniel Craig's James Bond, driving around in my custom car with 3 homies dressed like ninjas with my pimp-cane shotgun.

PIMP

CANE

SHOTGUN

Does GTA4 allow you drive around in a septic tanker truck and smear shit on everything while your passenger cracks jokes?

Hey I loved GTA IV but this made me reconsider SR2. I've played the first and I didn't think it was anything special but I guess I'll give the sequel a shot too. But not until a price drop.

This article pretty much sold me on this, I'll most likely rent this to check it out and buy it if it's awesome. I really didn't like grand theft auto because I couldn't stand the constant driving around and the lack of checkpoints. Saints Row 2 looks gleefully stupid, and I like that.

Also Jim Sterling, you can't just go around publishing your facts on the internet.

That's fucked up.

sounds like someone is bitter because he doesn't know how real cars handle ;)

I agree that the multiplayer was botched in GTA4 (they should have really went for crackdown style co-op), but the attention to detail really brought me into the world of liberty city

the major problem with the game is that the story was too linear and the relationships with friends didn't really lead to any exciting side-quests/missions and the mafia stuff near the end of the game sucked... and yeah there could have been more interiors to more buildings and more things to do (like an arcade or going to a mall), but they really started from scratch for this game whereas saint's row 2 is a 2nd iteration of the same engine... i'm sure GTA4: Vice City/London/Tokyo/San Andreas will have more of the stuff that is glaringly missing from GTA4

I actually avoided SR for a year because I thought it was a moron's game. Then a friend lended it to me and atm I'm at 95% completion and 690 gamerpoints.

I haven't picked up SR2 yet, but I will at some point for sure, after I get through Fallout 3 and some others.

Anyways, I agree with some of your points for sure.

Frankly, I couldn't be happier with the situation, if GTA 5 is further in the 'serious' and 'realistic' direction, I'll be happy, just as long as SR3 puts Gary Busy in the next game and, I don't know, something crazy like a breifcase bomb full of C4 and dildos. If they both continue to diverge into distinct experiences, I'll be happy.

I seriously don't know why people talk so bad about GTAIV nowadays. I'm still wowed when I play it. The immersion factor, the graphics... maybe I'm just a little more into realism than my other gaming comrades. I could see why more cartoony fun would be a good thing but it doesn't mean that GTA is immediately shit, like many comments insinuate.

While I haven't played Saints Row 2, I played Saints Row 1 after GTA4 and I felt nearly the same way. I love GTA4's realism in its own right, but it certainly isn't the same game we had with San Andreas. In other words, I don't think the realism brought it down, I had a lot of fun with it actually, but I certainly can say it changed the game's approach altogether.

While I like the new approach, Saints Row filled the gap for me in terms of just having stupid fun by doing a lot of stupid things. I'm really eager to get my hands on Saints Row 2.

GTA IV is certainly better than SR2 technically, in terms of graphics and sound and such, and tells an excellent narrative. But SR2 is just more fun to play, something that gets lost sometimes nowadays.

you forgot a few other major ones:

multi tiered story-
the fact that there are multiple gangs that don't have to have the missions in a series makes the main story line far more fun

nut shots-
you get respect for nut shots need I say more

picking stuff up in the environment-
I really like the fact that you can rip a parking meter out of the ground (and pick up the $ for extra cash) or pick up newspaper stands, chairs, pizza boxes, computers, etc and clobber people with it- in GTA you have to find a brick or a bottle or such if you don't have a weapon- in SR2 if you need to you can grab a trash can and chuck it at someone.

car games-
pretty much every vehicle has some kind of option for minigames- taxis (reminds me a lot of crazy taxi playing it), ambulances and even regular cars where if a passenger is in it you can play a hostage minigame.

human shield and throw-
I don't know why, but if you played the warriors (rockstar) on psp- you were able to grab people, throw them, beat their heads against the wall- in GTA4 you could just punch and shoot. In SR2 you can grab people and throw them off of balconies and railings, perform executions in a chokehold- it is waaaaay more fun.

gang takeovers-
randomly if you piss a gang off they try to take your turf and the battles are pretty brutal- but fun

I haven't had much time to play lately, but I purposely haven't gotten any games since SR2 because I do reallly want to play more- I am only about 4 or 5 missions into each gang- and have only explored about 1/3 of the map at this point... gonna try to take some time to play this weekend.

I was fearing that this post would turn into a fanboy flamewar, but no!

The community did better than I expected! Good job.

That said, I don't understand the problem you people had with the driving. I love the realism. It felt really great when I got every thing down.

I love it so much that I'm afraid Saints Row's driving physics will annoy me. I hate it when vehicles go far too arcade-like.

This is why I can never play Midnight Club, but can play Need for Speed. Need for Speed vehicles feel a bit realistic while being arcade. It's when things get too precise that I'm turned off.

I don't know. It's probably because I'm a sim racer fan. I still think you're all crazy.

When I played Saints Row 2 at the TGS, I just ran around cutting people up with the chainsaw. The nice booth woman kept telling me, what I should do to finish the mission, but I couldn't care for that and just continued my killing spree. It was a lot of fun. Fun, I didn't have like that in GTA4.

@Jon2309 totally forgot to add that- the radio stations in SR2 are a lot better than GTA4, in GTA I usually just turn the radio off since there are like 2 or 3 songs that are any good at all and the music gets irritating, but I actually like the radio stations- esp. the 80's station and the alternarock station.

I'm getting really tired of people complaining about the respect meter - I'm playing on hardcore mode and after completing level 6 on ONE activity I had enough respect to almost finish one gang storyline. It really wasn't hard at all to build up respect - not to mention that you get respect for killing people, car surfing, reckless driving, tagging, collecting cd's, etc. My complaint is that it was TOO easy to build up respect. I now have infinite respect and i haven't even started the sons or brotherhood missions.

Also the activities unlocked sick super guns and attribute bonuses - even more reason to play them. And if you say that insurance fraud, heli attack, fuzz, etc were boring then maybe you should go play "Cabela's Big Game Hunter"

Despite agreeing with you on all points GTA is in my head a 10/10 and Saints Row is an 8/10.
The Realism of GTA in every way made it completely different to mostly every other game in its brave to sacrafice certain aspects of fun. GTA and saints row 2 are such opposites that i hate it that there seen as the same.
All just a matter of preference in what you want and im tired of mindless shooterthons. Though GTA does need mroe stuff to bloody do to spend money on. A gang, businesses, residential property, more guns, more cars, ANYTHING!

I find it hilarious and kind of sad that this game didn't sell near as huge and get near as much attention as GTA IV. It's strange to me that somehow video games have almost stopped being judged on fun altogether. Its all about freaking graphics and plot and physics. Thats great and when a game can incorporate those things into a game that is STILL fun. But for some reason it seems that its ok now days to sacrifice the fun for slightly crisper looking shadows.

It seems to me that Volition realized that they are making a GAME and that when it comes down to it, a game will be judged on its FUN, so they made it fun.
