Ten reasons why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV

Ten reasons why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV photo

Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV. This is actually an undeniable fact because a writer on the Internet has said it is so, thus it cannot ever be refuted. Don't get me wrong -- GTA IV is a great game and one that deserves many of the accolades that it has received, but it's no Saints Row 2.

Of course, it would be wrong to make such a bold claim without venturing to justify it, even if those who would disagree should be strung up for going against the absolute truth. To back me up, I have ten solid facts that prove my righteousness and adequately display that Saints Row, a series that started out as a poor attempt to emulate Rockstar's controversial franchise, has now surpassed it.

Read on for ten reasons why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV ...

1. In-Mission Checkpoints:

One thing that has always bugged me about Grand Theft Auto is that if you fail a mission or are killed/busted, you have to do the entire thing again, including the boring drive to wherever the meat of the mission is. Saints Row 2 makes this a thing of the past with in-mission checkpoints that help remove some aspects of a stage that would bore you to death upon repeated attempts.

That's not to say that the checkpoints are always well-implemented or sensible, but at least you don't have to drive from the mission's activation all the way to where the action is every time you die.

2. Cars are actually fun to drive:

Why on Earth Rockstar decided to strive for "realism" is something I'll never fathom. This desire that developers have to be "realistic" all the time is helping to kill the fun factor of a lot of games nowadays, and one of the worst examples was Rockstar's decision to remove the arcade feel of their vehicles.

Saints Row 2 makes no such "innovation," and as a result, its cars don't handle like blobs of spunk on a rubber sheet covered in soapy water. The controls are decidedly old-fashioned, and the cars grip the road without swerving uncontrollably for players who don't want to act like they're driving a real car. Seriously, I'd learn to drive in real life if I wanted that experience.

I want cars that can go really really fast yet are still able to turn corners with very little penalty. I want to be able to crash without flying out of the windscreen every time -- something which got old, boring and time consuming after the first few times it happened in GTA IV. I want something that is not realistic. I got what I wanted from the cars in Saints Row 2.

3. Weapons are far more varied and awesome:

As part of its strive for realism, GTA IV cut out several elements that had made the previous games so much fun. Chief among these cuts were the numerous and outragous weapons that had graced the the GTAs of old. No more chainsaws. No more flamethrowers. Just very grounded, very real, very tiresome guns.

Enter Saints Row 2, a game that embraces the chainsaw and is more than happy to give flamethrowers the love that Rockstar denied them. Not only that, it throws in a few more fantastic firearms into the mix as well. Fancy a pimp cane that doubles as a gun? How about a foam hand that performs insta-kill bitchslaps and sends enemies flying into the air? All this and more can be found in Stilwater, not so much in Liberty City.

SR2's arsenal is varied, fun and in several instances, hilarious. Exactly what a gamer should want from his weaponry.

4. You can be a cockney bastard:

We're going to look at Saints Row's customization in a few moments, but one custom option deserves its own section -- the terrible, Dick Van Dyke-quality English voiceover that you can choose to give your character. It's so deliciously bad that it becomes awesome, and I can't think of Saints Row 2 now without inwardly grinning at its inclusion. Niko Bellic is a great main character and everything, but he's no cockney bastard.

5. Real customization:

Yes, GTA IV lets you pick out some clothes for Niko to wear, but that doesn't even come close to the level of personalization that is available in Saints Row 2. With the option to shape your character however you wish, you'll be able to pick an aforementioned voice, the way you walk, how you compliment or taunt other people and what color your hair is. With enough tweaking (almost too much tweaking) you can create anything you like.

Then there are the hundreds and hundreds of clothing options available to you, embarrassing Niko's rather drab selection of suits and brown shirts. You can choose to make your character look stylish or stupid, with anything from sharp suits to hot dog costumes. You can even opt to go nude, with an amusing pixelation effect to keep things "tasteful."

We're not done there, either. You can choose to pimp out your car, you can select what your bodyguards look like and you can change the way your home looks. While GTA IV feels like Rockstar's game, Saints Row 2 feels like your game. It's an important distinction and, in this case, works in SR2's favor.

6. Lots more to do:

Grand Theft Auto IV had some really good missions and a great story, but beyond that there was never really anything compelling. The dating and friendship minigame was interesting, but it eventually got boring having to deal with Roman calling you every half hour to invite you to go bowling. Other distractions, such as darts or TV, did very little to keep one coming back for more.

Once again, Saints Row 2 trumps GTA IV, with a wide variety of minigames and distractions on offer, some of them pretty damn robust in their own right. You can play in-game videogames, for example, including an awesome zombie-killing game. You can buy various businesses to earn extra income. The activities have also returned from the first game, with old favorites like Insurance Fraud, where you jump into oncoming traffic for money, being joined by such family-friendly jaunts as wearing a flame-retardant suit, setting yourself alight, and then driving a dirtbike around the city to ignite as much as possible.

Now that is gameplay.

7. Superior multiplayer:

The multiplayer in GTA IV wasn't really all that fantastic. It had its moments and the races could certainly be fun, but the deathmatches were bad and the game "lobby" is about as intuitive as heart surgery.

SR2's multiplayer, on the other hand, is far more fun. The simple deathmatches are where the game truly shines, and they are so much more interesting than the comparatively quiet and bland matches of GTA IV. The weapon variety and superior vehicles come into play here, providing an environment far more suited to online play.

The co-op is also an excellent addition, with a fantastic drop-in/drop-out usability that means you never know who might pop into your version of Stilwater.

But the most glorious part of the SR2 multiplayer is that it's not controlled by Niko Bellic's stupid little cellphone. It's actually done properly and isn't a complete inconvenience. Victory!

8. It looks better:

Wait, what? I know what you're thinking -- Saints Row 2's graphics really aren't very hot compared to most console titles out there, and it's certainly not graphically superior to GTA IV.

True, but that doesn't mean that Saints Row 2 can't look better.

Sure, SR2 isn't powered by Euphoria, and it doesn't have believable facial animation or much level of detail to its aesthetics, but unlike Liberty City, Stilwater has more than three colors in it. SR2 is bright and striking, and what its characters lack in detail are made up for with memorable design. SR2 looks better than GTA IV because it doesn't look like everything else.

9. It's much funnier:

GTA IV had its funny moments, but SR2 had me laughing out loud with only ten minutes of gameplay. From the inventively sadistic cutscenes to the immature jokes, Saints Row 2 is a funny game, if you lower your IQ enough to have fun. It's definitely stupid, but it doesn't really matter when you're watching a man getting tattooed with ink that's been secretly mixed with toxic waste.

And again, I present Mr. Cockney Bastard.

10. It's not ashamed of its own stupidity:

GTA IV seemed almost blatant in its efforts to get away from the Grand Theft Autos of old, and it is to be commended for trying something like that. However, you can't really compare to something that is almost delicious in its stupidity, and refuses to apologize for it.

Saints Row 2 honestly doesn't care whether or not you think it's puerile. One gets the impression that the team at Volition all sat around a table, wrote ideas on a piece of paper and then used every single idea they had, no matter how vulgar. SR2 knows that when you buy a sandbox game, you want to do stupid things stupidly while being stupid, and it is more than happy to oblige. It doesn't fight your attempts to cause mayhem, or your bloody rampages, and practically delights when you drive on the wrong side of the road.

Ultimately, Saints Row 2 does what some videogames seem not to be doing lately -- it remembers it's a videogame and acts accordingly. It's not trying to pull on your heartstrings and it's not trying to force anything on you. It literally gives you a sandbox and tells you to have fun. Grand Theft Auto IV is, I reiterate, great. But it's not nearly as fun as SR2

And that's why Saints Row 2 is better than Grand Theft Auto IV.

Fact.

I agree with you Jim. OMG is that like dividing by zero?

also...

11. MOTHERFUCKING CRUISE CONTROL so you can shoot while driving
Well yeah.

I agree with Jim Sterling.

My pimped out cars with my pimped out crew top Niko Bellic's friends calling him on his cell phone all day.

Also, samurai swords on motorcycles.

Also, turf wars.

Also, YES CRUISE CONTROL!!! its pretty brilliant.
What happened to you, Rockstar? You used to be cool...
Such as shame they delayed the PC version.
Another fantastic and very true article from Mr. Sterling
It's more fun but isn't better.

Cotton candy is more fun to eat than a Banana Split, doesn't make it better.
shoot oh right, I'm the devil's advocate around these parts . . .

ummm . . . GTAIV provided some . . . interesting realism . . stirring narrative . . .

Well, at least the combat . . . uuuh

Well, GTA has lock-on targeting. That's better than everything, right?
YES JIM, YES!!!

Saints Row 2 is amazing. Crowd Control and Insurance Fraud FTW!
I'll give it a try, but as of now I've lost all respect for you, Jim.
Haven't played either but I agree 110%. When I first saw GTA4 I thought it was going to blow; like you said Jim, the realistic driving, toned-down aesthetic and all the new life-sim aspects totally drove me away. GTA3 was fun, but what did rockstar do with 4?

I think the best reason of this list is the last one, that's basically exactly how I see SR and GTA. GTA = great sandbox game with a serious and out of place vibe, SR = crass humor and FUN!
I might be going crazy, but didn't have GTA IV have some check points?
i agree. but i think of it this way. GTA3 on PS2 is to GTA4 on PS3. both didnt have much to do, but when the next version came out it had so much more.

since GTA4 is the first one on the next/current-gen so when the next GTA comes out you better believe it will contain ALOT of new content.

which is stupid, because why not just do it on the first one. but trying new technology is tough. but once you get it working perfect you can start adding more stuff.

but i do love my SR2 for its childishness.
The cruise control is nice, but it's hard to drive and shoot. But it is easier than GTAIV.

I love this game, but the lack of voice-chat in co-op really bothers me. Also, I kept wanting to dive around for some reason...
I'm sorry, but when I drive down the streets in the afternoon in Liberty, the sunlight shines through the railroad tracks I'm driving under. Times Square LOOKS like Times Square. Complete with the flashing lights and neon. One of the reasons I always liked any of the Grand Theft Auto series is that it's very close to real life. I often drive myself driving down the road in real life and think to myself.. "If I were in Liberty, I could jump this curb and run down about 10 people!" I honestly believe GTA IV to be graphically superior, its not the characters.
don't get me wrong, SR2 has its perks, and yes, Jim, you've hit on most of them. But I've seen Volition put out some gems, and comparing these two games is like apples and oranges. You play one game for a trip to a realistic city that practically mirrors the real-life New York City. Or you play the other that lets you pimp yourself, your ride, and your crew, and do some hilarious shit.

(Don't forget about the trophies)

I like GTA IV's physics a little more.. maybe it's because I've been a fan of all of them... I also like the fact that when you hit people with your car the animations and death scenes in GTA IV are a little more satisfying to me

And I don't think GTA IV looks like any other game. It looks realistic, it looks like NYC. Nighttime looks like nighttime. The street lights shine onto the gray pavement.
I think Rockstar did a wonderful job with this game, the lighting, the daylight, everything looks EXCELLENT.

Again.. apples and oranges to me. I didn't buy SR2 for it's graphical superiority, I got it to make me laugh at it and have fun...

I like both games, but I think I like GTA IV a little more because I'm more familiar with it. I never played the original Saints Row, But that doesn't mean I can't see this game's merit. I just suppose it depends on your preference and gameing style.
I can't get enough of your articles Mr. Sterling.
Glad to see someone else say it. No doubt this game is far more fun that GTA4 ever was. Its better because its more fun. Co-op was a genius idea and really should of been included in some way in GTA4.
I love GTA IV. People are really giving that game a hard time now, when while they played it it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Fair play, Jim you always hated the driving but if that was less realistic it wouldn't fit in with the rest of the game. It would have felt tacked on.

I don't need any more pimps with walking cane guns. I live in Tottenham for crying out loud. Plus, I'm a cockney bastard and hear myself yabbering on allllll day as it is.
Christ almighty, thank you for saying this. I haven't even played Saints Row 2 and I'm inclined to agree with you, GTA IV was a huge, overhyped letdown. I haven't touched it since I beat it.
sterling, you're my favorite. I would just never sit in a hot tub with you.

well, again.
I have alot of respect for what Rockstar did with GTA4 in the plot department, but I can't help but think that the story and plot would have made a much better epic crime film or miniseries given certain frustrating elements of the gameplsy such as the car handing and the frustrating lack of checkpoints.
If SR2 can provide half the fun of GTA4, it would be more than a worthwhile investment.

At the end of the day, it's the physics and animation that keep me coming back to GTA. Pushing people down stairs, shooting out the legs of fleeing pedestrians... and it's all animated so sickeningly realistic!
If THQ can match that, I'm sold. But it'll take more than a junior high level of humour to reel me in.
Some of these are valid points. I doubt I would have more fun w/ Saints Row 2 than with GTA4, but I'll agree that the strive for realism was a dumb move.
I've been playing SR2 since release but I just can't get into it like I did GTAIV.
Something is just off about it for me and I don't know why. Yet.
Did Jim Sterling write this or Yahtzee Crawshaw?
I only maybe got five hours into GTAIV before I moved onto other games. I still plan on going back to it eventually, but it never really grabbed me like the older games did. Perhaps SR2 is the game I was looking for.
There's something about the lack of relationship personalization that I really like about SR2.

Its like they took Vice City and made a bigger game out of that game's concepts.
I've always thought that GTA was over rated. I'm not saying that the GTA games aren't good, but people act like it's the best franchise out there and it's not.

The fact that GTA4(I refuse to use roman numerals when we have a far superior numerical system) got so many perfect ratings is completely ridiculous.
10. It's not ashamed of its own stupidity:

That has to be the more important characteristic not just of SR2 but of all videogames in general.
Look at it this way: GTA IV is a direct sequel to GTA III, which did have some realism factor compared to the balls out wackiness of Vice City and San Andreas (which can be technically considered side stories).

SR2 seems like a spiritual sequel to San Andreas, and kept all the fun that GTA IV took out. I WAS going to keep GTA around to beat it someday, but now I can't even do that because SR2 is so superior to it.
Yahtzee thinks so too.
I'm aziel and i approve this message
I generally don't like sandbox games -- then again, does No More Heroes count as a sandbox game? But based on this and what others have said I might actually plunk down the money for this one.

Now, if only Volition would get around to making Freespace 3!
i remember a while back right before sr2 came out, i wrote a cblog about how i saints row 2 was going to be better and i got completely chastised for it. guess i wasn't so off.
"Glad to see someone else say it?" I just don't understand this site sometimes. Because I haven't seen anyone anywhere saying the opposite of Jim's opinion. I feel like I've read at least half a dozen blogs on this very site and up to a thousand comments elsewhere and maybe 50% of the reviews for the game and they all say the exact same thing. This opinion is so commonly accepted by the gaming community at large that I grow increasingly disturbed by the sheer mindlessness of the unified mass all repeating a mantra summed up along the lines of "We want goofy fun!"

Count me among the perhaps infinitesimally small portion of gamers out there who really didn't enjoy Saint's Row 2. The respect meter was my constant enemy, getting up in my face every time I started to enjoy the missions which wasn't all that often. I didn't care for the minigames because they all felt like they had at most five minutes worth of thought put into them. And being forced to play them was sheer torture. For every moment in the storyline that was funny, there were at least two for me that were just outright disturbing. Some of the murders you commit turned my stomach and that's pretty unusual for someone with a sense of humor like mine.

That's not to say I find nothing of value in SR2: the customization is undoubtedly impressive (perhaps the game's sole saving grace) and the in mission checkpoints are hopefully making an impression on Rockstar. But I for one had far more fun playing GTA 4.
I never played SR2.... something is telling me to give it try.
For once, I agree with Jim. All of his points were spot on, pretty much. Also Cruise Control.
Well, I wasn't going to pick this one up, but now I just might have to.
@Bus

Perhaps people are agreeing with Jim because they actually *liked* the game? This isn't some sweaty-hand, mouth breathing conspiracy against the modern gamer. If people liked the game, they tend to go out on the record and say so.

If you didn't like it, that's cool. There's tons of popular games that I hate, but don't chalk this up as some sort of underhanded scheme.
I agree 100%

I dugg your shit:
http://digg.com/xbox/Ten_reasons_why_Saints_Row_2_is_better_than_GTA_IV
Hmm...no idiots are angry yet. Sure, several people are respectfully disagreeing, and obviously that's fine, but the fact that this hasn't caused even a minor flame war really suggests this isn't a very shocking point of view. I'd say it really depends whether you're in the mood for gritty realism or some unashamed stupid fun.
I haven't even taken a look at this. I always assumed it was some moronic "Endorsed by Fifty Cent" type game that tried way too hard to give 13 year old middle class white kids the feeling that they had the street cred of a 40 year old drug dealing black rapper from Harlem.

Now I've read this, I can't wait to try it out.

I've not been a huge GTA fan since Vice City. I still buy every iteration, but I inevitably lose interest way too soon. The killing sprees, and random hidden missions when you stole certain vehicles, along with all of the cheese of Vice City especially, was imo what made GTA so much fun. The loss of that self-parody has just left the GTA series feeling generic and eventually, quite boring and forced.

/yawn
I agree with you completely, Jim. GTA IV offered something I wasn't looking for in a sandbox game, but Saint's Row 2 most definitely did.

The two points you mentioned that really hit home with me are the weapon variety and the amount of side-missions you can undertake. I rather enjoy the tazer and satchel charges. Returning activities like hitman and insurance fraud are great, as are new ones such as fuzz and bodyguard (or whatever it's called).

Also, capturing enemy strongholds is always a good time.
I still struggle to understand why people dont like the realistic driving. It took all of 5 minutes to get used to, and now i prefer it. It makes driving at top speed, dodging traffic, and taking corners much more fun, since its more difficult but feels great to pull it off.

I didnt particularly like this list, it wasnt very funny. I understand the taking the piss out of internet morons who cant discern opinion from fact, but it didnt need to seem so serious...
...Wow. This article just made me decide to trade in GTAIV.
Nice article jim, i've never tried the SR franchise but you've convinced me to give it a go. GTA IV was fine look'n and all but the fun factor definitely just wasn't there this time round like it had been in the past. The multiplayer was poorly implemented as well.
I tried SR2 for the first time at a friends house the other day.

I took out the katana WHILE ON A BIKE and cut people up. It was absolutely hilarious. That said, I will most likely not pick this up. Ever.

Not because it's bad, just too many great games coming out this season, and, knowing me, I will forget about this game eventually.
I'm really glad I waited on GTA4. I still want to pick it up when it's cheap, but not now at its premium price. Also, I'm unaware of SR2 until I have money and time.
Does SR2 have offline coop?
I am having trouble thinking of a single reason why GTA4 would be better than SR2 ;)

SR2 is the most fun, interesting, and enjoyable games I have played this year. If you haven't played it, do so.
