Quantcast

Mass Effect 2 kicks off with a couple bangs and more than a few surprises. If you've followed coverage of the second chapter of the sci-fi RPG, you'll no doubt remember either (a) seeing this before or (b) hearing us talk about it during E3.

It's a shocking ten minutes. But I don't believe it's only objective is to pull us into the second chapter of the sci-fi RPG. It carries a message: Shepard is not immortal.

The things you do in Mass Effect 2 -- how you respond to people, encourage them, help them -- shape how it ends, and those decisions will carry to the next game. It's heavy stuff, man.

so when you import a character what carries over exactly? your skills and stats, or just past choices that affect story?

I'm not the only one who found the "ominous incoming ship" music amazingly reminiscent of the "ominous incoming ship" music from the first episode of Firefly, right?

@bodybreak: only the major story decisions you made in ME1 get imported. Your character backstory, appearance and class also get imported but those can be changed once you start playing.

But importing a ME1 character also gives you various bonuses depending on how you played your ME1 character--you get lots of starting cash if you were rich in the first game, a bump up to character level 2 and a few additional perks depending on if you went Paragon or Renegade. In essence, you get a bit of a headstart.

You're really missing nothing by starting a brand new character. Nothing carries over except some meaningless stats "bonuses", and a few choices that you experience for like 5 minutes total.

So don't worry!

Not true. (or not completely true) Besides the boosts to Paragon/Renegade, the skill boost, and the early money boost, they say something like 100 decisions from the first game transfer over. NOT just the major decisions. And you can tell from all the personalized encounters and messages you'll get throughout the game.

So I'd say if you really want to get the most out of the game and make it your own, definitely try to get that Mass Effect save in. You can still change your class and your look if you want to,

Plus your codex gets transfered.

Also, I was level 58 in mass effect 1 and I got boosted to level 3 but I don't think it matters much because I think level 20 is the max.

Actually, I believe level 30 is the max. I remember there being an achievement for that in the captain's quarters.
