Dragon Age: Origins is an RPG-ass RPG. As such, the first ten minutes of the game aren’t packed with playable action; rather, developer Bioware orients the player with the game’s universe and its biggest problem: a new blight. The vicious Dark Spawn are invading Fereldan again, threatening to bring humanity to its knees. As with the last blight, the Grey Wardens are prepared to kill the aggressors and unite the peoples of the continent.

But there’s another problem: there aren’t many Gray Wardens left.

After the introductory cut-scene, the player is allowed to make a character. I decided to just go with a preset for a Human Noble. His specific origin story begins with some dialogue between he, his father and two very special guests. I decided to be a jerk during the entire scene, which, as you'll see, I'm pretty good at doing.

Check out the TMT and don't be shy -- tell us what you think about the footage and the game.

I played it on PC and it is quite awesome, probably the best RPG in the last couple of years. Though I wish you could set a bigger viewing distance, and zoom out more in the top-down view.

I'm really impressed with just how different the starting sections are. I'm playing a Dwarf commoner, for example. I doubt I'll ever play through this game six times, but I'll at least start a character of each type to play through that bit of unique content.

I did not sleep last night thanks to Dragon Age. No sleep at all. I've been pleased by the difficulty of the game. Even on Normal I've got to watch myself and treat most battles with some degree of care. Being able to zoom out and issue orders from a Baldur's Gate style viewpoint is definitely an necessity in the tougher fights. It's a damn shame the console versions don't get that option. I imagine it massively cuts down on your situational awareness.

Got it for 360 and PC. Excellent game on both systems and, despite my video card SUCKING on my PC (built-in HD3300 right now), the game still looks and plays perfect. Definitely fills my RPG void until Mass Effect 2 comes in late January. I'm with you, Reindall, I wish the viewing distance could be bigger, but thats a minor gripe overall.

Also I REALLY wish videos were viewable since for some reason these vides keep causing my PC to crash.

Don't tell me it's not doable. And looking at all the effort put into cramming pointless stuffs onto the PC homepage I know you guys are plenty active over there.

Just sayin'.

Wow, game looks good. I'm a little disappointed that the main character doesn't speak lines like Shepard did in Mass Effect(this video didn't just give me the wrong impression, did it?). Sure, they'd have to make voices for each race, but still, it adds something to the experience for me.

Oh, yeah, and...

The character you play doesn't speak except for token things when being issued commands at times.

It's interesting to see the responses playing as more of jerk opposed to be being respectful like I was.

I started playing last night, I can't imagine not playing the PC version. Those radial menus seem to be unintuitive. The PC suits this genre, and this game well. Either way the game is great so far, I woudnt have minded seeing Brad play another 10 min though, as I started a commoner dwarf. Interesting how different it all is.

Definitely. The other origins stories are mired in ignorance compared to the Circle Mage one. They learn so much about the mystical nature of the world right off the bat that has only barely been touched on in the ~7 hours I've played on my main character.

Not to play down the Human Noble origin story, but its at its best towards the end.

Xzyliac- Instead of waiting for a second opinion here, why not go to Metacritic and get dozens of them? Destructoid isn't the only website that reviews games...it's silly to wait for "a second opinion" when with barely any effort you can get as many opinions as you want.

Quite a nice intro. I was hoping to see some combat as part of the 'taste' but I guess in a dialog heavy RPG it's not so easy to get from character creation to combat within 10 minutes.

@Palidi - The only time a Human Noble talks (I haven't messed with other Origins stories yet) is when you hit "A" outside of battle. He says something snappy or annoying usually. In my 20 or so hours, he has yet to speak a line to another character.

I rented this disaster and it deserves a 6.0 IMO. I think the one thing I would change is the role playing, swinging action. THIS IS NOT LIKE BAULDERS GATE!!! Please stop saying that it is. (yes I know that no one said it here in this article but I have seen it before and especially in reviews). Anyway, I just wished when I rapidly hit the 'A' button that he would swing his damn sword just as fast not wait his turn like World of Warcraft. This game is like a behind the back P.O.V. Sacred 2. I hate the no voice character too. It also is pretty jumpy at times like when they talk and I have heard the music in the background abruptly stop and start on its own (HORRIBLE!). Please GOD dont let them fuck up Mass Effect 2!

I'm fine with the console version. While there may be comprimises over the PC version, I'm just glad I get to play it. Bioware has made a lot of console fans in the last couple of years. KoTOR on the Xbox was my first Bioware game and I've been a huge fan since. It's nice to be able to play this even though I don't have a computer up to snuff for gaming.

Ok Ok... The PC version is better, huh? Why? Because of the high availability of keys and the easy way to use the menu screens... well your right!

BUT...

That still doesnt change the fact that the game should have been more action oriented for the console version. I get it that you guys like to mouse click on the bad guy and watch your character go beat up the enemy, but for the console it should have been more about button mashing like Zelda.. i mean 3D Dot Hero! lol :)

Also,

PC = porn with my feet up

Consoles - FTW.

There are plenty of games where you do that, every game on console doesn't need to be like that though. Besides, all Bioware RPG's played like this before they started working on consoles. Even Kotor played like this.

I can totally understand how people wouldn't like the combat system of Dragon Age but that's just how Bioware has always made their RPG's.

KoTOR is one of my favorite games. I love the combat system. Not every console game needs to be real time action. I prefer consoles because they just work. But it is a trade off. The graphics will lag behind what's capable on a monster rig, and the interface will be clunky for certain games. But I like knowing that when I put a disc in the device, it will just work. No drivers, hardware conflicts, etc. I can see why somebody would be willing to put up with that for an optimal experience. For me, consoles are good enough and win on convenience. There is no right or wrong here. I'm just happy I can play the new Bioware game, even if it's a little janky on my platform of choice.

You also forgot better graphics and frame rate. Tactical view which is also quite useful for those battles with many foes. If I wanted action oriented then I would play Zelda or anything similar since there are already plenty of games out there for it.

If you didn't grow up on classic PC gaming though I can kind of understand the sentiment. This game is somewhat more catered to those that played Baldurs Gate. They did make the system a bit easier with the idea of drawing in console players. Example, if a character died in your party in BG, they would stay dead unless you resurrected them or brought them to a temple. It made you think tactically better instead of mindlessly running in.

The voice acting effort is really the best I've heard in a while. Lots of different voices, so much dialog, and really excellent and well realized characters. I the storytelling is realyl the high point of the game, and that comes through on any platform.

I didn't read up on the combat, so I too actually expected "1:1" button action. But, I got over that pretty quick. Popping cooldown skills satisfies my button mash just fine.

Also, the harrowing was an amazing start to the mage character. I haven't played much past it, but it was a real standout experience that definitely gives you more insight into the magical aspects of the world.

I see what everyones saying (thanks for a different perspective) and the last thing I got is this...

@Draconianviper

I played Baulders Gate & Champions of Norath on Playstation 2. My friend and I WOULD mindless run in and kill and if one person died the other one ran back to resurrect him. AGAIN, in these games they were action style combat so I think you must have played it on PC (where it must have been WOW style of point, click and wait). Obviously 2 different games with the same name then...

No point in going back and forth.

Those console Baldur's Gate games were fun for what they were. But they're totally different games from different developers that both happen to be set in the Forgotten Realms Dungeons and Dragons setting. That's why the console games have the Dark Alliance subtitle. The Bioware Baldur's gate games were long, complex RPGs from the mid 90s with tactical PC gameplay. Both the PC and console series are great fun in their own right. I can see why you were confused if you were thinking Dragon Age was going to be like the Dark Alliance games!

Yeah, we're talking about completely different Baldur's Gates. The original PC series is an entirely separate experience from those my-first-RPG action titles that showed up on PS2 and Gamecube (and Xbox?).

I'm very pleased with this game so far. My only complaint is the randomly tough fights where your tanks might get killed and then you die, and realize the auto-save hadn't kicked in in a while.

I wish I could auto-save every 2 minutes. But I guess I'll do it manually, just to be safe.

Also, you must be patient while playing this game. You might go an hour or more between a battle. Particularly when you come to a new town.

Really disappointed so far. to qualify, it's a fine game, and there was never any doubt about me buying it given the track record of the company, I was really hoping for a more polished interface to go with a good game.

But it's hard. Which is nice. It seems like they wanted to make a tactical RPG that it is actually possible to get your party wiped out in. Nice to see difficulty levels that actually mean something.

Then, they put the worst description of what your abilities are and what they do that I have ever seen. And no way to test them before locking in your choices. Even spells which have no purpose other than to do damage have NO indication in the description of how much damage they do. Abilities that have positives and negatives really don't let you make an intelligent decision on if you should use them, because how would I know wether an unknown bonus to damage is worth taking an unknown penalty to hit?

Really get the impression that there's a deep and interesting combat system that the in game documentation is doing it's best to stop you from getting any enjoyment out of. Oh yeah, and when you get new quest items, like letters, hiding them in the codex for you to hunt for instead of letting you read them in the quest description isn't that awesome.

@Timmins - I actually think that the lack of hard info on skills is good. Why should there be any numerical value to them? Why do you need damage range with spells, when all you need to know is their type and relative strength. And while that doesn't bother me, it would be nice if they went with it further and removed numerical indicators for stats, weapons, armor and their modifiers - or at least give an option to do that.

reindall:

Because any tactics or strategy game is about making meaningful choices. The difficulty says to me that, if you want to play this as a tactical or strategic rpg, instead of a hack and slasher, you should be able to. With no information to base a decision on, your decisions are pointless or frustrating. This really makes leveling a lot less worth looking forward to, also. I constantly get the bethesda rpg effect, where every level up, I suspect I am screwing my character over for the future by making all the wrong choices, though I couldn't possibly be expected to know better.

Compare a game with a VERY transparent mechanics system, like KOTOR. You know exactly what blade flurry does. You know if you want to get an extra attack, and are willing to accept the -4 to hit penalty, and what exactly that means. You can decide "okay, these grunts are easy to hit, even with the penalty, it only drops my to hit from 60 to 40 percent, it's worth it." Or "okay, this boss is really tough to hit, I probably only have about a 30% chance of hitting him, no way is it worth it to take a -20% chance." you have made a decision, it was meaningful, and it was meaningful BECAUSE you had enough information to know WHY you should do something. Is mighty blow's extra damage worth the penalty you take? who knows? they don't tell you how significant EITHER is, and you can't even open a window where you can see the rolls you are making like baldurs gate did, so you can reverse engineer your way to figuring out how combat works.

Plus the whole jamming worthwhile and completely useless abilities into the same linear tree, and putting important upgrades to one skill at the end of another skill progression that you quite possibly don't want at all, so you can't get something you really want, like fireball, without taking something that has absolutely nothing to do with being a long range blaster mage, like flaming weapons, which doesn't even affect the archer rogue, or either of the two mages you put in your party. Tough to look forward to a level up where you don't get anything you EVER expect to use. It's like they took everything about the KOTOR talent trees except what made them good, and transferred it over here.

Action games work well with mystery. Strategy games shouldn't have it unless it is CAREFULLY considered. Demon souls might work with not telling you what's going on, I really don't think Dragon Age does.

Fear not, there is still hope. I too sometimes enjoy a totally mindless game, if I need to relax. But I picked up Dragon Age based on the hype (having never played a pause-and-play before), and I am totally hooked. Though (in the spirit of full disclosure) I'm playing the console version. Would I enjoy the PC version more? No, because I'm on a MacBook and I'd have to shell out for a copy of Windows, which would make my wallet sad. The PC version is obviously superior. Pragmatic decisions, y'see.

But even on the console, I'm really happy with the game. Once you learn the layout of the radial menus, they're really easy to navigate; easy enough that I can actually get in and out of them without feeling like I've interrupted the flow of the game. (Though obviously I almost never move that fast, just so I have time to think). The lack of a tactical zoom-out's kind of a bummer, but I don't feel it's significantly impaired me.

The way I see it, as long as Nintendo keeps making the Action-RPGs of my childhood, Infinity Ward keeps spiking my adrenaline to unsafe levels, and BioWare keeps the traditional RPG alive, the future of gaming is fine. Something for everyone.
