Infinity Ward’s downloadable version of the original Call of Duty, dubbed Call of Duty: Classic, is now available over Xbox LIVE and PlayStation Network. Do try to keep from wetting your pants in sweet, sweet anticipation: as of right now, it’s only available -- via a token -- to those who purchased the “Hardened” and “Prestige” editions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

But if you’re wondering how the id-tech powered downloadable performs and if it is indeed a faithful port, feel free to take a gander at the first ten minutes in the above, which like MW2, begins with a tutorial that teaches how to aim, throw grenades and not to stick your head up while someone is firing. It’s not exactly thrilling stuff, but I’m having a hard time remembering a tutorial that was mind-blowing.

Aside from the tutorial, there's also a brief look at the game's first and particularly atmospheric level. You'll see me clock a dude in the back of his skull, then run around confused. I'm sorry about the latter part of that.

Activision has yet to reveal a date as to when the downloadable will be available for purchase over both networks.

I agree with Shadowiii. As somebody who didn't get into the CoD series until Modern Warfare, I don't think I could go back and play that. It helps that I don't have a code to download it.

Wow, that's some huge loading time on the mission.

I need to download it now that my internet is working. I may as well, even if it sucks, I have the code. I started with CoD2 and worked my way up, so this will be the just the kind of outdated, low resolution stuff that I assume memories are made of.

Of course, with MW2, I don't exactly know when I'll care enough to play Classic.

Seriously, I remember playing this game years ago, and I didn't think it looked that bad.
Also the fact we are BACK in WWII again is kinda...annoying. :P
Still, memories and all that.

I went back and tried to play through all the CoD games on PC to get ready for the new release. Surprise, surprise, Call of Duty doesn't work anymore thanks to some driver error that is apparently common and has no fix.

Oh, you say you're releasing it on consoles? Well I guess I'll go grab my credit caSCREW YOU.

The first Call of Duty is one of my favorite games ever. What made it more sweet is that only PC gamers had it for the longest time. Now that the console generation is finally getting their taste (6 titles into the series and 7 years later), I think everyone is going to be surprised at how little the franchise has changed.

@Shadowiii,

Actually, I find myself pleasantly surprised by how the game looks.

Perhaps I was prepared for the worst, but it actually looks like it has aged well and would still be playable.

It works fine, you just have to play with your OpenGL settings. Any PC gamer should know how to do such a thing.

This game is still awesome by the way, especially if you supersample the hell out of it and make it look as crisp as any game can look. I wonder if they rebalanced it for consoles, since it was a PC exclusive back in the day and was balanced for mouse aim and leaning and such.

Looks to be in 720p with some jaggies though... one wonders why they didn't run it in 1080p with massive amounts of AA, I am sure the Xbox could have done it.

I appreciate the response, but I tried for a good while. The only thing I can get to change is whether the error message is a buffer overrun or telling me that my video card doesn't support the damn game.

I have a 9800GTX so I'm pretty sure that isn't possible. According to the interwebs, the problem seems to be with the Nvidia drivers since 185.[68?].

I suppose I'll keep trying though, given the vote of confidence from someone else.

I have got it running on the new 191 drivers... I think, come to think of it, you need to use nHancer to open the opengl compatability section, then change something in there. I have done it, and if you really desire it I can send you the info or post it here.

If you are not using nHancer I highly suggest it, it gives you a lot more control over your drivers than the nVidia control panel does.

its cool of infinity ward to do this but i still think it should have stayed pc only. way more fun on there. i think the stalingrad level is my favorite level of any game, ever.

Yeah, I could use the help apparently. I tried everything in nHancer's compatibility settings.

LOL so now the console players can see the roots of this classic. Quite honestly yall got shafted with Big Red One ill be honest, that was a big FU lol. I can't belive how long it took him to do the tutorial level, In 10 minutes I can do the tutorial and the first mission. Of course im not a console player either, been playing on PC for years. Spend 4-5 hours nightly playing COD:UO online, and can beat both COD and UO on Vetran its not hard at all. And for everyone saying its dated, it is thats the QuakeIII engine right there, and this game is from 2003, it wasn't cutting edge when it came out, but was damn fun.

All you console players that don't have it id grab it, or if your computer with its intergrated graphics is new enough your PC will run it fine also. As for not working on newer drivers get nhancer I run COD:UO on a TRI SLI GTX285 Setup, just remember to set affinity to one core or the game will glitch. But if your desktop is say from 2008 or newer you can get a better experince on PC, just visit steampowered.com and download it for i belive 9.99 and you will enjoy it more.

I think they're insane to charge 1200 points considering a couple of the games available for that cost (modern, awesome games). Then again, there's a lot of garbage for the same price.
