If you like blasting aliens to bits in dark corridoors, then one of today's Xbox LIVE Arcade releases, Alien Breed Evolution, is for you.
The game has an "old school" feel, almost immediately reminding me of the PlayStation One title, Loaded. You move with the left stick, and aim your weapons with the right, pulling the right trigger to blast the slimy critters that crawl out of vents to eat off your face. The first area has you searching (by holding "A") lockers and dead bodies for ammo and gear, and navigating the dark hallways of a crashed space station to power it up again.
Alien Breed Evolution looks pretty damned solid for an Xbox LIVE Arcade game (it uses Unreal Engine 3.0), and it's straight-forward control scheme is easy to pick up. Ten minutes into the game there isn't much thinking, but there's plenty of explosions and a decent alien body count. What more can you really ask for?
It's hard to say if the 800 MS Points price tag is worth it, as I don't know how long the experience is going to last. It does feature a cooperative assault mode separate from the story, and at the very least, feels like a high quality experience.
If you've been playing Alien Breed Evolution (which is also set to hit PlayStation Network and PC next year), let us know what you think.
[Note: The action starts around 3:20 second, if you want to skip the comic book style opening storyboard and get right to it.]
Anybody ever play Project Overkill for the PS1? Man that game was badass. I love the hell out of some overhead shooters. This looks almost just like Shadowgrounds survivor for PC. First level didn't seem to do the game any justice though. I'm sure it gets downright insane at later levels.
800 points? When I was DLing the trial, it said it cost 1200 points. Was that a screw up they corrected? (obviously I'm not on my 360 to check, since I'm here at Destructoid, so I can't see if it changed to 800 points now, I did DL the trial early, soon as it hit Marketplace)
Unreal Engine 3... If I see one more game use this, I don't know what I'll do!
The only games I've seen make good use of it was Wheelman and Wolverine - both games managed to create large streaming environments without loading screens!
The game was incorrectly priced on launch at 1200 points, which has since been rectified by Microsoft. The correct price is 800 points, and totally worth it in my opinion!
I wonder if Black Cat Games are kicking themselves for sitting on Alien Swarm: Infested for so long. http://www.blackcatgames.com/swarm/screenshots_asi
From what I herd of people playing Alien Breed Evolution, there's not enough to do as aside from open doors and shooting stuff. That and something about lack of integrated weapon upgrades.
On a slightly different note, can you imagine Half Life like this? That would be sick!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
also, your pretty pro there nick chester.
However is kind of hard to detect an enemy.

So how does this top-down shooter fare?
