Ten Minute Taste: Alan Wake

4:20 PM on 05.06.2010   |   Jordan Devore

Usually these posts are done by either the person who recorded the footage (in this case, Rey) or someone who's gotten the chance to at least play the game in question. I fall under neither of those categories, but I do desperately want Alan Wake.

This Ten Minute Taste appears to be an excellent indication of the game as a whole, based on what we've been hearing about Remedy's latest. I'll readily admit my mouth was agape when I saw it for the first time, caught up in the spooky atmosphere and narration.

Basically, May 18 (the 14th for Europe) needs to get here. Soon.

I honestly don't know if I should watch this or not. Do the first 10 minutes contain any scary parts or spoilers? I want to be surprised when I play this game.

Dammit, another reason to want an Xbox 360.

I like how Alan can take 3 hits with an ax and the other guy dies after one. Can anyone say continuity error?

The difficult dodging looks like this could be very frustrating. Sigh.

1251 is still shitting on Alan Wake and crpping up the comments section, I see.

Ah, it never changes around here.

Anyways, this game is motherfucking win with some icing and sprinkles on it.

LOVE the narration!

Anyone who hates on the narration is too dense to realize what they're trying to do here. I love it, it adds to the whole effect of playing a novel as it's being written. You don't see unique narration much anymore these days, everyone just opts for elaborate cutscenes or mountains of dialogue with NPC's.

And yes, the dodge was just being executed incorrectly. From the looks of it, the LB locks onto the target and the stick dodges, instead of having to hit both at the same time. That would make it about the same as most other dodge mechanics.

This guy narrates just a little too much and his voice acting is not what I expected. I don't know, guess I was excepting something like Max Payne's voice acting...

Between a conspicous HUD, constant screen messages, hand-holding instructions and mediocre voice-acting, how exactly is suspense supposed to be built up?

Yes, they're too dense (ie: 1251).

He always hides behind excuses like he's super excited for Alan Wake or something. Bullshit. I've read his comments on this site when I post and they're very much against anything not PS3. He just does his trolling in a more stealthy manner.

Those xbox achievement overlays are an abomination. this intro is basically like the intro/nightmare from Silent Hill 1, except back in those days they'd give you the benefit of the doubt and let you explore on your own. also, the game didn't pat you on the back every time you found a thermos or whatever.

Alan Wake is not Silent Hill and it doesn't want to be. Thank fucking god.

That franchise is a sloppy, wet turd waiting to be flushed down the shitter.

I watched the whole vid and was quite impressed overall. I don't have an Xbox 360 so I won't be getting the game, but I can appreciate it, from the vid and info. I thought the narration was well executed to be honest, not the best I've ever heard but still, good :) The atmosphere was tense and spooky, and psychotic dream hobos are quite threatening, let's be fair here!

yeah all that screen text really ruins the atmosphere.

the story seems like it could be pretty cool, but something about the game play seems a little lame. how long did it take them to make this game?
im wondering if the delays were due to story re-writes?

and is that Brad Garrett's voice i keep hearing?

1251, I'm pretty sure you're the one always getting called out in the comments.

Let me guess, you think they're all "douches" and your comments aren't completely useless? You're living in bizarro land, my friend. It's not everyone else who's the "douche", but maybe it's you? I'm not calling you one, but simply questioning you. There's a reason people call out your shit.

@1251

I don't take someone as sincere when they claim they're excited for a game, and intend to purchase it, but in the same breath are publicly deriding it, saying things like how "the narration totally destroys the experience," or that "its too short to be worth a purchase." I think if I actually believed something about a game "completely kill[ed] the atmosphere" I wouldn't be excited for it or purchase it. I take your words even less seriously when they are at odds with my own opinion, and in matters of fact, contrary to reality.

The issues with the game are readily apparent, and no one is denying that they're present. You, on the other hand, are criticizing it on a fundamental level, ignoring intentional stylistic choices and attacking anyone who calls you out for how you're handling your discussion.

You're putting a lot of energy into lambasting an upcoming release, in multiple threads I might add, when you've apparently already made up your mind about it. I'm stuck at work, I'd love to be playing games rather than talking about them. What's your excuse?

I've been counting every second in this game's development cycle, and it's finally here... I've hyped it so much in my head it can only disappoint.

Reminds me more of Alone in the Dark (not the most recent one; the earlier games), what with using light to harm enemies and all.

The gameplay looks quite shoddy and the voice acting leaves a lot to be desired. I didn't get the feeling that the narration is supposed to be reminiscent of a novel, but what id did sound like was a guy pronouncing words as he read - as opposed to acting the words. If it's granted that the narration is fully intended to be like that of a book, the least they could have done to neuter its invasiveness is to ace it (yeah yeah, Max Payne did it right etc.) Combined with the hud and text, it definitely ruins the atmosphere.

But that's just from the video I've seen. Bar the gameplay, it definitely has potential.

His body was hot, even though the room was properly air conditioned.

This game does look really fun, though the constant narration sounds just enough like Garth Marenghi and is just pedantic enough in style that I will hear all of it in his voice.

I'll play it one day, but probably not soon, considering how easy it's becoming to find AAA titles at less than half price 6 months or less after release.

So while Wake's asleep he gets guidence from god who heals him and encourages Wake to kill the damned. Oh yeah! day 1 purchase, and i'm willing to bet HBO would want to do a mini series or something involving this game.
