Tell us how you really feel about Gamecock, John photo

John Romero (better known as the guy that made Doom) apparently thinks Gamecock are a bunch of twats. Or more specifically, he thinks so of Gamecock's CEO, Mike Wilson. Directly quoted from Romero's blog:

So, over on Kotaku they have a news item about Gamecock's release schedule. Once again, just like with Godgames, Wilson is taking all the credit away from the indie devs and pasting his asinine logo everywhere.

I got a chuckle out of reading the reader's comments on the article. People are now starting to get a clue about how Mr. Wilson operates. Hey everyone, he hasn't changed in over 10 years - these are the kinds of jackass stunts he pulled at Ion Storm with Daikatana.

For those of you that don't know what Romero means by the last bit, Romero and Wilson worked together at id Software and later at Ion Storm, before Wilson moved on to establish Godgames. Romero further comments in his blog that after Take Two absorbed Godgame, Wilson was just waiting for "his next victim/investor so he could go hogwild all over again." Harsh!

While I can't comment much on the obvious dislike there, it does get me wondering what Mr. Romero would think of a guy parading around in a robot helmet wailing about cocks.

I've already criticized GameCock, so I agree with him. It's all very well pulling those kinds of asinine stunts, but when you don't seem to be doing anything else, you're just a nuisance. So far they've been all cock, no game.

I never understood the love for them, so far they've released crap.

That Box game looks interesting, but I haven't heard anything super special about it yet.

Wait, what? I thought we all liked GameCock. I'm so confused.

Interesting read. Gamecock started to annoy me after their little stunt at the VGA's. They better release something soon so they can be taken a little more seriously, but somehow I don't think they want that.

@Jim Sterling
Hahaha, "all cock and no game" is my new favorite phrase, I'm going to have to figure out a way to use that in social situations.

He's totally right, you know. They're just slapping their name to take credit for a game--much like Squeenix did for Dragon Quest VIII (they had barely nothing to do with that game; it was Horii's on studio and Level 5 that did the work). Not to mention they're a bunch of idiots.

Yeah, 'cause romero had nothing to do with how much daikatana sucked, totally at all. This is a case of the washed-up has-been calling the attention whore pathetic(a common variant of pot-kettle-black phenomenas). Gamecock have started to annoy me, but dementium seems good, and I like mushroom men(albeit purely because primus was in the trailer). Insecticide and the rest look quite shit though, in my eyes.

@ Sterling:

ROFLMAO @ "all cock, no game". Share the same sentiments about these guys. They spend too much time trying to be different rather than focusing on the games.

Twats.

Romero is an over-rated designer (extremely over-rated! - John Carmack made Doom) but he's right on the money there. I haven't seen anything from GameCock except lame-assed publicity stunts. Destructoid need not fear Romero's wrath; we have game to back up our cock.

When I was a freshman in high school, I started a "band" called Hidden Fallacies. We were so deep and brooding. The very first thing we did was convince our parents to buy us a domain name. We then made our badass website, and plastered it with skulls, flames, and pictures of ourselves in rockin' poses. A few times, we'd even adjust the lights in my bedroom (where we practiced) to make it look like we were playing on stage and then take more pictures of ourselves all good and sweaty so it'd look like we were playing to a huge crowd. I didn't even have an amp, and my buddy David had no idea how to play bass. On our site we even--no joke--had links to "music" and "video" pages that said "Coming Soon!"

After about a year, we finally recorded six hits on the mic on my computer into Microsoft Sound recorder. Since we didn't have a singer (Did I forget to mention that?), our songs were simply titled one through six. Song Number Four was our single. We were going places. Anyhow, a few months afterwards, we finally had our huge debut show at BT’s Coffee House. We spent a good hour before the show walking around town and convincing people to pay the two-dollar-cover to come see us play because it would be totally worth it. We managed to round-up a pretty sizeable crowd, but they look really disappointed when we finally started playing. Must've been the acoustics in the coffee house...

Anyway, we eventually broke up after our drummer broke into a pixie-stix-and-soda-induced rage and let us know how he really felt. Bastard didn't have any faith in the band at all... what a dick.

What were we talking about again? Hmm... Oh right! I don't know what it is, but every time I hear something about Gamecock, I get the strangest feeling of déjà vu.

Seems good Drac? No my friend, Dementium sucked thanks to a dreadful battle system and forcing you to restart an entire chapter over if you died.

What Kyousuke Nanbu said; it's pretty, but it's frustrating. All the areas look the same and the battles suck. I got bored right after chapter five and haven't looked back...

John Romero has become synonymous with failure, so I wouldn't listen to him. Don't get me wrong, the early days of ID created 3d gaming, but Romero hasn't done a thing right after leaving.
