Blake Peebles

Meet Blake Peebles, a sixteen year-old from North Carolina who has aspirations of professional gaming. He's so serious about it that he's dropped out of high school to focus on improving his skills full-time, according to this story at The News & Observer. What's more, his parents actually consented to this decision.

Now, before everyone gets into a tizzy about bad parenting practices and poor decision-making, Blake is still receiving an education. His parents have arranged for private tutoring which allows for the boy to practice his gaming late into the night. The arrangement apeears to have improved Blake's study habits as well and his mother, "hasn't once had to tell him to do his homework, because he does it on his own."

Blake isn't earning any serious cash just yet, having only made about $1000 and mostly in non-cash prizes from local tournaments. He has his sights set on bigger things and is heading to a regional qualifying tournament for the World Cyber Games in California this month.

While I'm not sure I could condone behavior such as dropping out of school to pursue a career in playing video games,  it's refreshing to see that Blake's parents were willing and able to help him pursue his goals in a responsible manner. And the kid appears to have a decent head on his shoulders about it, too. Still, pro gaming is a tough racket and I hope he has a few ideas for what he can fall back on if he winds up investing several years into this and doesn't become the next Johnathan Wendel.

His continuing education better include video game development at some type of accredited college or university (even if it's DeVry or U. of Phoenix!) within the next 3-5 years, or else.

On second thought, if he gets a job at Destructoid....

Reminds me of the time I dropped out of high school to focus on my DDR career, this kid is gonna feel like a real dumb shit as soon as the Guitar Hero fad fades. ;P

Sigh...if you're going to devote that much time to learning to play Guitar Hero professionally, you should really try to learn guitar and get in an up and coming band. It's hard, but there's a much better chance of you making a living as a maverick indie musician than on the pro gaming circuit with a still-recent game.

Everyone who is angry or disappointed at this is just jealous. This kid is living the dream, man.

I don't get how he's an idiot. I wish I was smart enough to convince my parents to do that for me.

My thoughts exactly...I started reading this and said "what the hell? Go take some guitar lessons."

What happens when the Guitar Hero/Rock Band popularity starts to vanish? Sure, he's getting private tutoring to finish out his high school career...but he'll have spent all this time and energy on a skill that will be useless. I hope he isn't stupid enough to ignore working on a skill to back-up this endeavor...or else it's off to the magical land of flipping burgers when this phenomena peters out.

Or hey, who knows. Maybe he'll make a ton of money off of this and be the coolest guy on the planet. And then we'll all be kicking ourselves for not doing this.

Like necros said, learn a real guitar. I don't hate Guitar Hero, its a load of fun, but playing it professionally is just a waste.

This kid either needs to become a hot girl and join the Frag Dolls or pick up StarCraft and move to South Korea. I wish the best for him!
